Honeybee

Dean slumped against the worn wood door of his apartment, shedding his leather jacket and flannel shirt and making a futile attempt to dust some of the flour off his face before trudging through his apartment. He pried open the window, smiling softly as he noticed his neighbour sitting in his own window, book in hand. "Heya, Cas" he called, surprised as Castiel flinched, book nearly slipping out of his hands.

"huh? Oh, hello Dean."

"Hey. I'll be back in a couple minutes, just need to rinse off. Gabriel spilt flour everywhere earlier and it's a pain in the ass to clean up."

"Wonderful." Castiel smiled softly, already returning in his book.

Five minutes later, Dean returned to see Castiel still perched on the same windowsill, lost in his book, though now munching on some carrot sticks.

"Hey, Cas. Miss me?" Dean joked, grinning as hoisted himself up onto his own windowsill, swinging his legs out so they dangled over the fire escape, emerald green converse hanging just above the platform.

"Um, kinda? Sure, I guess. The day seemed to go by pretty quickly. Want a carrot stick?"

"Nah, I'm good. I take it your day was good, then? You seem smilier than usual" Dean wondered, eyes shifting to focus on the summer sky, sunset stained and filled with candy floss clouds.

"Yes, it was nice. We had a children's storytime at the library, and I got to say hi to some of the younger kids and their parents afterwards. They seemed to like my sweater." Castiel gestured at his yellow and black striped sweater with the words "bee mine" written on it in loopy cursive. "It appears that the toddlers enjoy the fluffy texture. I think some of them just wanted to eat it though. How was your day?"

"Ehh, it was okay. Like I said earlier, Gabe spilt flour everywhere, so that was a pain to clean up, but otherwise it was decent. Sam did come in around lunchtime as whisk Gabriel off for some fancy lunch date, so I got some peace and quiet for a bit." Dean fumbled a bit, fidgeting with the hem of his plain black tee shirt as he worried about what to say next. He glanced up, noticing the way Cas watched his movements carefully, a soft blush painting his cheeks. "Anyways, I'm gonna go grab my guitar. A little practice can't hurt, right?"

"Sure. I'll be here."

Dean hopped down from the window, ignoring the rising flush that threatened to cover his face, remembering Cas's soft gaze. He had enjoyed the conversations they had had over the years, and as they began talking almost nightly, Dean noticed the growing attraction he felt towards the librarian. Castiel had always been kind to him, and since Sam and Dean's parents' deaths a few years ago, Castiel and Dean had grown even closer. But Dean doubted Castiel would ever feel anything towards him as more than a friend. Sighing, he grabbed his acoustic guitar, pulling the strap over his head and adjusting it until it sat comfortably against his chest before making his way back to the window, trying to climb back up without breaking himself or his guitar in his attempt. Once finally situated, he pulled a pick from his pocket and began strumming some basic chords. "Any requests?"

"Could you play Honeybee? It seems fitting considering my choice of sweater." Cas said with a grin, putting his bookmark into his book and tossing it into his apartment with a loud thunk. He turned towards Dean, watching him strum the opening chords.

"Honeybee,

Could you imagine what our life would lead?

That silly ring, it wasn't meant to be

Luckily you saw in me

Something I couldn't see"

Dean sang, his voice rough and scratchy, though still soft and sweet, perfectly fitting the song. He swayed to the rhythm, and Cas joined him, eyes closed as he let himself drift away, away from his little apartment in Kansas. Dean peeked at Castiel, who swayed blissfully, looking peaceful enough to be asleep. Dean's heart softened a bit, and he sighed, focusing back on the music as he pulled his eyes away from Castiel's serene form.

"But here we are

After all the messes and confessions

To the stars

That we never really owned as ours

And if our world comes tumbling down

I never could forgive myself for leaving out

You're the one

You are the only one"

Dean's voice caught a bit on the high notes, and he swallowed before continuing, smiling as he imagined singing the song for Cas, to only him, filling the lyrics with how full, how content he felt when he was with him.

"Won't you decide

Won't you decide

I want you to soar

Don't doubt anymore

Won't you decide

Won't you decide

I want you to soar

Don't doubt anymore"

Castiel's eyes fluttered open softly, and he gazed at Dean, cobalt eyes brimming with emotion. He sighed, eyes still trained on Dean, but continuing to sway in time with the music.

"And if our world comes tumbling down

I never could forgive myself for leaving out

And if our world comes tumbling down

I never could forgive myself for leaving out

You're the one

You are the only one"

Dean's heart swelled, and he realized just how hard he had fallen for this sweet, quirky guy that talked to him from his apartment window, always caring what he had to say, always there for him.

"And if our world comes tumbling down

I never could forgive myself, I'll say it now

You're the one

You are the only one"

Dean sang the last lyric looking directly into Castiel's eyes, filled with fuzziness and warmth. He set his guitar down inside and hopped down off the windowsill onto the fire escape, crossing it with a few short strides before he was level with Castiel's window. He reached out to cup the other man's face as he leaned in, freckled cheeks painted with a soft blush, emeralds gazing into sapphires. Hesitantly, he pressed his lips to Castiel's, feeling their softness and the way Cas leaned into his hand where it still cupped his cheek. They parted, and Dean sighed shakily, a grin spreading across his face. Castiel blushed, head tilting curiously as he judged Dean's reaction. He slipped onto the fire escape so he could move closer to Dean, twining his arms around his neck and leaning closer. They kissed again, and Dean rested his forehead against Castiel's gently, murmuring the same lyric he had sung earlier, now filled with warmth and joy.

"You're the one

You are the only one"
