Something New
"This is Halloween, this is Halloween
Pumpkins scream in the dead of night," Aria sang softly as she strung up little pumpkin fairy lights.
Halloween was fast approaching and Aria had finally talked the Cullens into letting her decorate for the holiday. Emmett and her went to the Halloween store in Port Angeles the previous day to shop for supplies. Somehow they managed to blow the budget that Alice set for them thanks to Emmett. He was like a kid at the candy store, grabbing everything in sight that intrigued him. Also not to mention that he jumped into the cart and had Aria push him around the store.
She looked around the house admiring her work. Spiderwebs hung in the windows with little spiders scattered amongst the webbing. On the coffee table sat a little jack-o-lantern on top of a black lace. The entryway's were covered in blood splattered plastic coverings. Emmett had taken the liberty to wrap each door in caution tape, which didn't help Aria as the flashbacks of that night came back after seeing them. The kitchen, well the "Witches Potion Room" as Felix had dubbed it, held cauldrons, spell books, and the spices were now in little glass bottles with labels to make it seem like they were ingredients for potions. Candles littered the house, and fake skulls of different variety sat on the bookshelves and in the cabinets. Fake severed human limbs littered the dining room table. Caius argued that they should use real remains which Aria greatly opposed. The picture frames were replaced older broken frames, bloody hand prints lined the walls courtesy of Jacob and Seth.
Aria practically skipped to the den setting up the bluetooth pumpkin speakers by the flatscreen. Emmett saw them when they went to Wal-Mart and just had to have them. She wanted to tell him no but he gave the best puppy dog eyes she'd ever seen and she caved letting him buy them.
Decorating the house had given the mortal a distraction from the inner turmoil she was at war with. She debated telling her family about everything but decided it would only lead to stress on them. She burned the photos in the woods the previous week, hoping that with each image she fed to the flames a piece of her fear would fade. Unfortunately, it didn't, she still felt an unease when she was alone. As if someone was watching her, even in a crowd of people she still felt like someone was observing her every movement.
"Aria," a melodic voice called.
Aria had both earbuds in, unaware that Jane called her. Jane heard the soft playing tunes of a song she was unfamiliar with. Aria sung softly under her breath capturing Janes attention.
"They say it won't be hard, but they can't see the battles in my heart
But when I turn away
The demons seems to stay"
Jane sat on the couch listening to the human. Something in the song spoke to the sadistic guard. All she knew was fear, people feared her and her brother in their humans lives as well as in this life. She battled within herself constantly, she wanted to be bubbly, sweet, and desired to see the world on the bright side that her brothers mate always seemed to find. Jane's demons always resurfaced, her fury fueling her decisions and making her act accordingly.
Jane envied what her brother had. She watched as Aria chipped away the hardened exterior of her twin over the past few months. She found her sibling smiling more, more relaxed, he showed a happiness that only Jane saw. Aria wasn't even trying to thaw the ice that encased the witch twins heart, but still managed to do so. Jane watched as the mortal mended the pieces that the vampiress was never able to fix for her brother.
Jane hated her for that. That was before they had a girls night. She saw why Alec fell for the belle of Houston. She looked out for Jane that night. If attention was drawn to Jane, Aria quickly deflected it by saying something off the wall. She conversed with Jane as if they were just getting to know each other as friends. Due to her gift she knew when the group made the favored guard uncomfortable and steered the conversation back to safer territory. The high ranking guard began to see the human as a friend, not competition for her brothers attention.
Aria spun around and jumped. "Do ya always have to scare me?"
Aria yanked out her earbuds staring at the now amused Jane, "I wished to ask you a question, but you were busy."
"Babe," Aria said as she sat next to Jane on the couch, "throw somethin' at me or poke me."
Jane smiled, "I'll poke you next time."
Aria smiled and crossed her legs resting her hands on her knee, "Ya said ya wanted to ask me somethin'?"
"Yes, what is Halloween?"
"Halloween is one of the best times of the year, people dress up in costumes, kids and teens go trick or treatin', parties are thrown. It's a lot of fun."
Jane grabbed Aria's hand dragged her to the patio. Outside sat the members of the Volturi coven and guard. They were hunched over a bright orange paper that fluttered slightly against the glass table. Aro's film covered eyes ran across Jane and Aria, lingering on Aria a little bit longer.
"Aria, how wonderful for you to join us," exclaimed Aro, a little too enthusiastically for the Texans liking.
Aro took Jane extended hand, reading through her conversation with her friend. "Halloween is a night of mirth and merriment," Aro explained to the other clueless vampires, dropping Jane porcelain colored hand.
"Honeybee," Alec called, earning Aria attention as she crossed the distance between them, sitting on his lap, and wrapping her arms around him.
Aria hummed in response as Demetri slid the orange flyer towards her. Aria's eyes examined the paper. It was decorated in a spooky black font the picture of a laughing jack-o-lantern and bats flying across the moon took up majority of the space.
"A carnival?" questioned Aria.
"It should be quite joyful," Marcus reasoned, staring off into the distance.
Aria's dark brown eyes danced between each set of red eyes. She didn't have to be an empath to know they wanted to do something fun for a change. A smile graced her face as her eyes lighting up once again.
"We can go but on one condition," Aria started, pausing for dramatic effect, "everyone wears a costume."
