Parting Ways
"Who's goin' to help me pull pranks when ya leave?" questioned the short girl that was helping Felix load the SUV.
"You still have Emmett," Felix replied, placing Jane's makeup case inside the trunk, "I'm sure he can help you prank Edward and your uncle."
Aria pouted crossing her arms like a small child, "But we don't get caught when we prank people Feli-bear, I'm always a suspect when Emmett and I prank them."
Felix chuckled as he watched his tiny companion pout. Her bottom lip stuck out slightly as she looked up at him through her lashes. He thought back to last night, it was one of the best nights of his life. It was a glorious time between her, him, and her childhood best friend. Felix and Chris had taken turns embarrassing their mutual friend and causing her to laugh uncontrollably for hours on end. Oh, how he wanted to stay and protect her and embarrass her with Chris but unfortunately he had to return to Volterra.
"Well cupcake," Felix said rubbing the back of his neck, "maybe I could kidnap you and bring you back to Volterra."
Aria laughed softly and tapped her finger against her chin as if she was in deep thought. "I wouldn't call it kidnappin' since I would come willingly."
Felix closed the trunk and pulled Aria into his side as one of her arms wrapped around his waist. The duo walked slowly back towards the house, a comfortable silence filling the space between them. Demetri sat on the stairs watching the pair before his eyes looked across the endless sea of green. After his small friend and her mortal companion fell asleep he took it upon himself to search through the woods looking for any tenors or scents that didn't belong to the Cullens or the wolves that resided in Forks. He just wanted to make sure that Aria was going to be safe before he left.
He looked down at his hands, a perfectly folded piece of pristine white paper was in his grasp. The tracker had taken the liberty to write down the phone number of the castle and his own personal cell for the petite human in case she needed him or needed someone to talk to. As she grew closer, Demetri watched her as she smiled up at his best friend talking about visiting them for Christmas break, if her uncle and aunt allowed her to go to Volterra. A smile found its way on his face as he saw her eyes light up as she saw him and her smile grew wider. She easily made any of them feel like they were one of the most important people in the world with just a simple look.
Aria ran to the stairs, her black rain boots being caked in mud from the previous nights thunderstorm. She stood at the bottom of the stairs looking up at the tracker she loved like an older brother. Demetri patted the spot next to him, a silent sign for her to join him. Quickly without her slipping she managed to ascend to where he sat and plopped down with about as much grace as a trotting hippo.
"Hey Demi," she greeted wrapping her arms around one of his and rested her head on his hard shoulder.
"Hello beautiful," he greeted back. She threw a playful glare up at her friend, she didn't like it when he would call her pet names that dealt with her looks.
With an unneeded sigh, Demetri presented her the paper, "Here sweetheart."
Aria unfolded it revealing Demetri's elegant handwriting. A string of numbers stood on the parchment that were labeled as Demetri's number and the secretaries desk phone.
A teasing smile made its way onto her angelic face. "Wow, it only took four months but I finally got the Casanova's number," she joked causing her friend to smile.
"If you wanted my number you simply could have asked."
Felix sat on the stair on the other side of Aria watching as her and the prized tracker joked amongst themselves. He noticed that his best friend seemed more relax than he had ever been like all the other times the pair hung out. It was seldom when the tracker wasn't the smooth talking, making women swoon vampire heartthrob around certain individuals. He normally only relaxed into his normal dorky self around only Jane, Alec, and Felix. Felix was pleased that Aria got to see the true Demetri Volturi.
Jane had joined them shortly there after sitting on the step below them, leaning back on Aria's legs. She let Aria braid her silky golden hair into a French braid. It was rare the four of them all got to hang out as friends without Alec hovering waiting for an opportunity to pull his mate away since "they always took up her free time."
"So," Aria started gaining three pairs of ruby red eyes on her, "y'all will be ok in Volterra without me or Alec right?"
Felix scrunched his eyebrows, obviously confused, "What do you mean cupcake?"
Aria shifted slightly in place buying time to choose her words carefully, "Since y'all have been here I've helped y'all understand the 21st century so y'all fit in. I won't be there to look after you."
Jane shifted to get a better view of her closest friend. Aria's hands were in her black ripped skinny jean clad lap, her Rolling Stones T-shirt was tied in the back so it would fit her better since it was a medium and hung off of her frame like a dress. "I'm sure we can manage," Jane smiled, "after all thanks to you Felix now yeets everything into a trash can."
Felix pretended to dunk something into an invisible garbage bin, "Yeet!"
Aria suppressed her laughter behind her hand as Demetri questioned the other part of her statement, "What about Alec though?"
Aria shrugged her smile fading, "He's been with y'all on every mission, I don't want something bad to happen to any of you 'cause Alec's not there to help."
Janes eyes softened at her friends confession, leave it to the kindhearted human to worry about nearly indestructible vampires. The mistress of pain held one of the mortals hands in both of her own, "Dearest Aria, do not fret, we are very capable of taking care of ourselves."
"Besides," interjected Demetri, "we've had millennia with Alec. You two should enjoy your time together."
"But don't enjoy it too much," Felix joked, "I'm not ready to be an uncle."
Aria managed to choke of her spit at Felix's joke, well she hoped he was joking. She coughed loudly as tears collected in her eyes. Felix was patting her back gently trying not to harm her. "That's not going to happen," she croaked as she finally managed to get her coughing under control and breathe normally.
"I'm glad you feel that way," an oh so familiar voice spoke from behind the group that sent Aria's heart into overdrive, "I couldn't bear the thought to watch as you are drained of life."
Aria turned noticing Alec who stood with his arms crossed. He had dressed like a normal teen, a black zip up jacket hung over his olive green sweater, and dark blue jeans and black vans hugged his feet. His golden Volturi crest sat on his shirt, gleaming brightly as if it was just cleaned.
Alec's voice rang out in the silence, "The masters are saying their goodbyes I suggest you do as well."
Aria got up from where she sat and headed into the house with the guards on her heels. Upon entering the house she was met with the oddest site of everyone giving a formal goodbye, handshakes and everything . She was used to giving hugs, possibly a kiss on the cheek if the guest was a family member or friend. This was bizarre to her. Marcus was the first to see the small framed mortal and met her halfway through the living room.
Marcus had his hand out, waiting to give her a proper farewell. Aria stared at his hand for a moment before she moved his arm to the side and hugged him. "My dear-"
"-where I come from we hug those we love when we part ways," interrupted she.
Marcus chuckled lowly and returned her embrace, "Then I do believe this is goodbye."
"Nope," she said, popping the P when she spoke, "goodbye means farewell forever in my book. Ya aren't gettin' rid of me that easily, so it's just a bye or see ya later."
Aria bestowed a kiss to her favorite vampire kings cheek. Marcus smiled, she never ceased to amaze the forever depressed king, "Very well then, until we meet again."
A cough alerted her to Caius's presence on her right. She turned to face the man that always held a look that would make you think she had bitch-slapped his mother to the ground, possibly even his grandmother. This time was no different only this time instead of a burning rage that made Aria want to rip anyone's head off there was sorrow.
"What's wrong?" She asked, her brown eyes overflowing in concern that only she could muster. He may have hated her with every fiber in his being but she did worry about him.
"Nothing is wrong," Caius sneered trying to maintain his scowl only to fail miserably and pull Aria into his arms, "once I get over the fact that I have to part with the only human that I care for."
Aria returned the kings hug, enjoying the fact that she somehow managed to thaw Caius's frozen heart. "I'll miss ya."
"Like wise."
Caius pulled away, still not comfortable with physical touching all that much. Next to take his place was Aro. Last night, after Aria had informed them of her past she finally let Aro see the inner workings of her mind, with Chris persuading her. Since then he had been itching for another chance to try to figure out how she was able to control the emotions of those around her. Knowledge was power, this is what the psychotic king lived by, and sadly, the human mate of his most prized guard still was an enigma to him.
"I do believe it is my turn," Aro spoke joyfully.
Aria gave him a side hug his cloak keeping what little flesh she had exposed safe from his mind reading abilities. She still didn't fully like the idea of him snooping around in her mind. Aria hugged each of the guards she treasured as family. Promises were made, she knew full well each one they made would have to be kept. Promises had always held a special place in Aria's life. She was relieved to find out a promise was just as sacred to the immortal race as it was to her.
Her, Chris, and Alec watched from the front porch until she could no longer see the cars. Alec's eyes stayed glued on the horizon, it didn't take a rocket scientist for Aria to figure out Alec could still see his family faded off into the distance.
