chapter thirteen
“Should I go with gold or silver?”
Kandi invited Lucinda over to get ready. While Alex had her own predicaments, Kandi strengthened her relationship with Lucinda. Sometimes Alex questioned if she should've been threatened at the friendship between the two, but she would push it away as a foolish thought. Kandi was allowed to have other friendships outside of her. It was selfish to want her all to herself, especially because she also had Vylad.
Alex turns to look at Lucinda, examining her for a moment. She hadn't meant it in a sexual way, but she needed a once over. The girls hadn't put their dresses on yet, but they were hanging up nicely in Alex's open closet.
They would've done this at the Ro'meave household, but the day was too hectic with Garroth inviting the boys over to get ready there. There was little to no one else in the Zvahl home.
“Gold. I think it'd compliment your skin tone better than silver would.”
Lucinda takes note of this with a head nod. She's quick to begin placing an earring in her ear. Lucinda was quite fashion forward, often stating her opinion even if others didn't want it. Though, for a time like this, she was unsure. The silver could've gone with her dress, but the gold was also a valid option.
“My little sister is following in her big sister's footsteps,” Cadenza gushes, walking over to Alex from behind and wrapping her arms around her shoulders. “If only Laurance would have fashion sense knocked into him.”
Alex rolls her eyes and prys herself from her sister’s grasp. She steps forward, looking into her mirror at her reflection. She then glances up at their dresses, twisting her face. “Do you think everyone will look the same but in slightly different fonts?”
That's what homecoming like felt to Alex. All she saw on Snapchat and Instagram were girls that wore the same time of dress but in a slightly different style or color. Just because their dresses differed from each other didn't mean they wouldn't match someone in a crowded room.
“Why?” Kandi snickers, placing her mascara back into her bag. “Is there a certain font you call dibs on?”
“I only know of Times New Roman and Arial, and I hate both of them.”
“Oh, be nice,” Cadenza says, swatting at her sister. Alex felt her hair being picked up and dropped numerous times from her sister. It was clear Cadenza was figuring out a plan. “It's winter formal.”
“It's the least important dance of the year,” Alex retorts.
Alex liked dances, but Cadenza was crazy for them. It was another reason why she could get dolled up and parade herself as some magnificent creature that turns heads. It was something she was good at, hence the major.
“It's a dance nonetheless.”

Garroth could possibly make anyone swoon. He could look someone's way, and they would fall head over heels. He was naturally charismatic. Though, when he got together with Alex, he tried his best to limit his charm. He only wanted it to be towards the woman he was in a relationship with.
He was doing well, and Alex appreciated it.
“Have I told you how beautiful you look tonight?”
Alex feels Garroth's hand slowly glide across the small of her back. His fingertips linger ever so slightly on the fabric of her dress. The small touch sends fire onto Alex's skin.
“A few times, yes,” Alex responds, flashing a smile in Garroth's direction. She was trying her best to ignore his fingers. “Are you fishing for another compliment for yourself?”
“I wouldn't say that.” Garroth's hand travels from the small of her back to her hand, pulling her towards him in the form of a twirl. There weren't many people paying much mind to the two, so they got away with what they pleased.
He jokingly swayed with her to the music, creating his own tempo. Alex laughs, her head tilting back. They had been listening to some fast paced song, so they looked out of place.
Alex stops him, holding onto his hand instead. “I don't believe that was the song for that.”
He chuckles to himself. Garroth spots their small group of friends and motions their way. Alex agrees with him, and the two head in that direction.
“Would you rather listen to a Taylor Swift song?”
Alex's lips curve up in a large smile. “Of course I would. Sources tell me that “Timeless” is a better wedding song than “Lover” is now.”
Garroth playfully rolls his eyes. “Please stop using Tiktok as your sources.”
Alex laughs at this and goes to see what the universal topic at hand was. While she had been with all these people at some point of time that day, most weren't in her focus. It was like she was actually seeing some of them for the first time that night.
Laurance looks over at the blond couple, realizing that they had disappeared at one point. “Where did you two go?”
Garroth stares at him for a moment. “We never left the room,” he says. “We were just on the other side of it.”
Laurance appeared hesitant to believe them. He narrows his eyes and slowly nods his head, but he lets it go nonetheless. Soon, he returns to his own conversation.
“What was with him?” Alex asks Garroth.
The music shifts in tempo. It was something that mocked what Garroth originally danced with her to.
Garroth shrugs his shoulders. “How would I know?” he chuckles. “Shall we dance?”
He holds his hand out to Alex to grab onto. She accepts, smiling. “We shall.”
