chapter eight
Alex and Garroth walk down rows of pumpkins and dirt. Alex steps over vines from discarded pumpkins and those of new. Garroth chuckles at her attempts of not falling over. The cool air nips at their cheeks and nose, creating a luster of pink. It mixes in with Alex’s blush, creating confusion on what was what. Garroth’s hand clasps tightly around her’s, creating a warming sensation in her palm.
“I’m enjoying myself,” Alex randomly blurts out, breaking the silence that was around them. She squeezes his hand, looking up to him.
Garroth looks down at her, a bit surprised at her sudden words. He knew it was because he was being quiet that she said it. “Even if it’s the same as last year?”
“I enjoyed it last year too,” Alex says, “If it isn’t broke, don’t fix it.”
Garroth planned this exact date for their first date. It started off with going to a pumpkin patch, and they made their way towards a café to warm up. The café was an in the moment kind of idea. Alex was a bit chilled, and Garroth decided that a café was the best way to fix it. He was also a bit snacky, so it fit.
They weren’t alone on their first date. Kandi had joined them on a double date with Dante. Of course this relationship didn’t work out, but it worked at the time. Garroth was able to keep an eye on his sister and Dante, but he was moreso happy he was with Alex.
Alex lets go of Garroth's hand and tightens his jacket around her. It no longer smelt of her perfume, and it somehow smelt like him once again. It was probable Zianna made a comment about how she hadn't seen the jacket in quite some time, and it disappeared as quickly as it had made its presence.
Her eyes scan across the field, looking at pumpkin to pumpkin. To Laurance, they were too old for pumpkins. He didn't even want to paint one anymore. Cadenza hated the idea of touching the inside, but she enjoyed the carving aspect. Hayden enjoyed the family moment and helped Cadenza clean out the inside if it pleased her. Laurance did it for Hayden, but he was never as jolly as Alex was. She enjoyed the whole process, but she wasn't strong enough to properly clean out her pumpkin.
Garroth watches from afar, looking around for his own pumpkin. He didn't need anything too large. He was well aware that something large caused more work. Besides, he would've had to carry it.
“You're not going to like this conversation,” Garroth starts, catching Alex's attention.
Alex was bent over a pumpkin, examining it on its vine before deciding it wasn't the one. She looks over to him, face turning sour.
“You better not bring up your grandmother on our date,” She says. “That's a turn off.”
When Garroth falls silent, Alex rolls her eyes. She knew he was going to bring her up, but he didn't want to now.
“Just get on with it,” She sighs. “I can tell this is bothering you.”
Garroth walks towards her and reaches for her hand, but Alex pulls away. She insists on searching for her pumpkin as he talks to her. Agreeing, Garroth allowed her to take the way.
He told her exactly what his mother had told him in the dining room. He loved his grandmother. He really did, but he didn't love what she did. He didn't appreciate it in the slightest. Garroth didn't understand why they would look so far into his future.
Alex didn't have much to say. Frankly, she had a hunch that was the reason why his grandmother was acting the way she was. And while he was appalled by the idea of anyone believing she'd cheat, she understood why walls were built.
Garroth waits for Alex to say something. And when he is only met with a sigh, he jogs over to her and instantly wraps his arms around his girlfriend. He squeezes her, resting his chin against the top of her head. He thought she was upset.
Alex nozzles up to him in his embrace. “Garroth, I'm not upset. I understand where she's coming from. It's just. . . what the fuck. The entire situation is ‘what the fuck.’” She sighs once more and pulls away from him. “I'm not a cheater, and I'm not a liar. I understand that she only wants the best for you, but she jumped to conclusions too quickly.”
He places his hand on her cheek and smiles when she leans into her touch. He places a kiss against her forehead. “She's not my favorite person in the world right now either, and I'm the one who has to see her at Thanksgiving.”
This causes Alex to chuckle and look to her side. “I found the right pumpkin,” she says, pointing to the large one in front of her. “And it'll be even better when you carry it.”
Garroth's heart sinks at the sight. The pumpkin was the size of his torso and then some.
