18. Impeach My Opinions [6.6]
no roasts in this one, sorry not sorry; I only roast when the work is particularly detrimental.
Impeach My Opinions by JSNoel.
OVERVIEW
TO THE POINT: none.
BLURB:
Election day was the day of rebirth. The month for regained hope. A year of new beginnings. It was the day that brought a community to drown in denial and despair with its elected school's president.
Aaliyah Deleon, the newly elected president, made promises for an easier life on Sungling University's campus. She had the knowledge, captivating speeches and devious ways on keeping her reason for running a secret.
Clyde Hosking, former vice president of the LGBT+ club, wanted his community to soar without any difficulties. When Aaliyah became the obstacle he tried to avoid, he already knew that no amount of pleads could change her blissful ignorance. The day of regret. The month of planning. And a year at war quickly begins with one concerned question.
MORE DETAILED:
I'll just start off by saying, "Woah."
I've drawn a blank.
I honestly have no idea what I just read.
Impeach My Opinions wasn't bad, or awful. But, it NEEDS WORK.
I explain below.
IM TIRED.
FULL REVIEW
I review with the following criteria.
COVER:
STORY CONCEPT:
GRAMMAR:
CHARACTERS AND CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT
WRITING STYLE:
PACING/ORGANISATION:
IF IT WAS ENJOYABLE!
for a final score out of 35.
After I multiply it by a 100 and give it an overall rating.
COVER: 3.75/5
I definitely like this new cover over the old one. I like the text effect, but other than that nothing about it really screams read me or hints at anything I've read in the blurb.
STORY CONCEPT: 3.75/5
The story concept is unique.
It's not one I've read before. But, at the same time, when I actually opened the book I couldn't understand a single thing.
I think it has to do with how your ideas were expressed. And as much as I'd like to give you some help on how to explain the ideas clearly, I can't—becuase I myself couldn't grasp any of what your characters were saying.
GRAMMAR: 2.75/5
The novel has multiple errors in GPS. I deducted marks accordingly.
CHARACTERS AND CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT: 2/5
I literally have NOTHING to say about the characters. At least what I've seen of characters from the Prologue and first chapter.
If someone asked me to retell them in my own words what I just read I would not be able to. That's how it is.
I didn't know what I was reading!
And the same goes for the characters.
The President seems like a maniac, even that was clear, but there's not enough time spent on world building, on introducing the character, and again—cleary expressing themselves. I couldn't understand anything that Ailyah was saying after she won.
Nothing.
WRITING STYLE: 2/5
There isn't anything unique about the writing style—but it NEEDS WORK.
The writing is concise, cryptic and awkward. Descriptions need more fleshing out. The organisation is jumbled. The pacing needs work.
Overall, Impeach My Opinions seems like a first time work—is it your first novel, JSNoel?
It's awkward, premature and needs work.
It's like shoving a newborn baby in front of a train and telling it to walk itself off the railings.
That train would kill it before it even knew what hit it (no pun intended).
PACING/ORGANISATION: 2/5
The Pacing was bonkers. That's an exaggeration, of course, considering the fact that there are only two chapters published at the moment, but the pacing was still off.
And I think that's also saying something since there are only two chapters.
I think you need to slow down and while you are focusing on making chapters short, don't cut out everything.
Spend more time in prose and exposition, explain more so we can actually understand what's going on because while reading I was just lost.
WAS IT ENJOYABLE? 3.25/5
MEH. That's all I have to say.
I didn't hate it. But, I never liked a single thing either.
This review was short as I didn't really have much to say.
TOTAL SCORE: 23.25
OVERALL RATING: 6.6
