Chapter 8

"You know, you really don't have to," Taehyung insists as he runs besides Jungkook, mentally cursing Jungkook's long legs for walking so fast.

"Oh, but I want to," Jungkook replies with nonchalance.

Taehyung decides to drop the topic as he heads to where his friends told him to meet them.

Taehyung feels wary as he walks, knowing that it is past curfew and that they could get caught. Jungkook notices the expression and rolls his eyes playfully.

"Are you seriously worried about teachers catching you right now? Didn't I tell you about how scary the place we're going is."

Taehyung decides to ignore the ravenette's question as he looks around cautiously.

"Hi!"

Taehyung yelps as he jumps, he stumbles back and hits Jungkook's hard chest.

"J-Jimin, this is like the second time you nearly scared me to death in a single day!" Taehyung exclaims.

Jimin, however, despite being scolded by the smaller boy, pays no mind to him. Instead, his focus is on the tall dark-haired boy behind him. Jimin frowns, running his gaze over Jungkook's form and scrutinising him subtly.

He then yanks Taehyung away behind a wall and stares at the boy with squinted eyes.

"Why is he with you?" Jimin asks firmly.

Taehyung gulps, fiddling nervously with his fingers as he tries to explain the situation.

"W-well you see, h-he is my roommate and-"

"He's your WHAT?!"

"Y-yeah, my roommate."

Jimin raises his eyebrow before scoffing lightly. "Tae, why didn't you tell me you were rooming with the devil?"

"Shh, he might hear you," Taehyung whisper shouts.

Jimin shrugs, "whatever, I'm pretty sure he already hates me. But that's beside the point. You still haven't explained why he is with you right now?"

Taehyung nods, anxiously continuing his explanation. "Well, I h-had to tell him why I was sneaking out past curfew since he was in the room at that time. But, um, when I told him we were going, he told me that it would be dangerous and that he would come with us."

Jimin squints his eyes in suspicion. "So what? He's coming with us to go stargazing so that he can protect you."

Taehyung splutters, "W-what, n-no! He's not going to protect me, i-it's just... I don't know why he's coming but he just is! I was too afraid to tell him no, I'm sorry." Taehyung drops his head, feeling ashamed for possibly ruining a good night with him and his friends.

Jimin is silent for a moment before he sighs "I know Tae, it's not your fault, don't worry. But whatever you do, just try and keep him away from the group, me and the group, well, let's just say we're not exactly fond of his rude arrogant personality."

Taehyung nods, "I-I'll try."

The two boys head back to where Jungkook is standing. The dark-haired boy is casually leaning against a line of lockers when they come back. He sends Jimin a playful smirk that has the blond subtly grinding his teeth in anger.

~
The bus ride is awkward, to say the least. The rest of the group, as expected, weren't ecstatic over the new arrival so tension rose quickly amongst the boys. Taehyung couldn't help but feel bad for ruining what was obviously meant to be a fun group bonding session.

Finally, the bus comes to a halt at a dark street and the boys stand up and exit the vehicle. Taehyung thanks the bus driver as he steps out into the dark streets. A set of chills run through his body as he feels the ominous vibe of the town settle within him.

"Why is it so dark," he whispers to the group.

Namjoon turns around, smiling gently at the visibly frightened boy. "It's a low budget town. Everyone who lives here can barely afford to pay their electricity bills and the government doesn't really bother to provide proper fundings to the town since half the town just end up in jail anyway."

Taehyung looks around in awe, inspecting the colourless buildings with a new glint in his eyes.

"Well, we can't dilly dally any longer. Me, Hoseok, Jin and Namjoon will head over to the nearby convenience store, might I add the ONLY convenience store, and get some snacks to eat. Um, Tae, you and Jungkook can head to the place and start setting up? If that's okay?" Jimin says while shooting an almost apologetic look at Taehyung.

Taehyung hesitantly looks over at Jungkook, who hasn't spoken a word since the bus ride and then looks back at the group before reluctantly nodding.

The group of boys head off, leaving Taehyung and Jungkook to indulge in the tingling silence.

"Follow me," Jungkook speaks in his low voice, starting to walk off before Taehyung could even agree.

Taehyung runs along with Jungkook who strolls casually with his long legs, ignoring the smaller boys desperate attempt to keep up.

"How do you k-know where we are going?" Taehyung asks, feeling slightly out of breath.

Jungkook doesn't answer for a bit but then finally says, "I just do."

Taehyung nods, despite feeling unsatisfied with the answer. He decides to stop running alongside Jungkook and just lags along behind him.

Jungkook seems to notice this as he looks back at the blue-haired boy, a small smirk playing out on his lips as a devious idea emerges in his head.

"There could be many murderers lurking in these alleys, y'know," he says while gesturing towards the dark spaces between the run-down buildings. Jungkook watches amusedly as Taehyung perks up, eyes widening frightfully as he unconsciously speeds up and edges closer towards the ravenette.

"Wanna hear a scary story?" Jungkook asks randomly, eyeing the boy who looks around paranoidly.

"No," Taehyung squeaks, already frightened enough by Jungkook's previous comment.

"Well, once upon a time, there was a little boy," Jungkook starts, ignoring Taehyung's refusal to hear the story.

"One day he went out in the street by himself, wanting to explore the world without his parents, even though his mother told him not to go."

Taehyung looks over at Jungkook, frowning. "Why would he not listen to his mother?" He asks quietly, almost as if speaking to himself.

"As the boy was walking, he was beckoned by an old man down a lonely street."

Taehyung looks up, unwillingly listening to the story.

"The man tells the boy, ' I will ask you three questions, if you get them all right, I will give you a big prize'"

"The boy nods but then asks the man what would happen if he gets it wrong, the old man doesn't reply, instead he smiles and starts to ask the first question."

"'What is my favourite colour?'" The man asks. The boy thinks for a second as he looks over the man. Noticing that the man was wearing a bright red tie, the boy replies with 'red'."

Taehyung looks around, feeling as if he was being watched by 'an old man in a red tie'.

"The man smiles, congratulating the kid for getting the right answer."

"Then he asks the kid the next question. 'Who do I think is better, boys or girls?"

"The little boy immediately answers with 'boys' because well, he himself is a boy."

Taehyung nods, now feeling somewhat drawn to the story. "Yeah, but girls are good too," he mumbles quietly himself. Jungkook playfully rolls his eyes at the smaller boys random commentary before continuing.

"The man nods, once again congratulating the boy for answering correctly."

"Then he asks his final question. 'What do I prefer to eat my favourite meal with? Forks or spoons?"

"The smaller boy frowns, not knowing how to answer the question. He thinks for a little while before answering 'forks'."

"The man looks at the boy with a weird expression before shaking his head. 'Nope' he says while leaning closer to the boy. 'I like to eat my meals with my hands.' He then suddenly grabs the boy with both his hands saying, 'you asked me what I would do if you lose?'"

"The little boy was found weeks later by the cops, half his body was bitten off by what they thought was an 'animal'. The end."

Taehyung gasps, feeling fear creep up onto him more. The boy looks around cautiously, feeling even more wary of his surroundings after Jungkook told the story. A sudden noise from an alleyway causes the blue-haired boy to scream, frantically scrambling closer to Jungkook. Sure, Jungkook might kill him later for being so close to him but he'd rather be killed by Jungkook figuratively than be killed by a murderer literally.

Taehyung whimpers, "w-what was that?"

Jungkook bites back a smile, feeling utterly satisfied with having scared the smaller boy.

"I don't know, Bambi, maybe it was a psychopath killer."

Taehyung bites his lip due to his crippling anxiety, his big brown eyes looking around frantically. Jungkook decides to tease him more, he speeds up his pace, now walking much faster than he originally was.

Taehyung gasps before racing up to the boy. "Please don't leave me alone," he squeaks, his shimmering eyes staring at Jungkook with fear and desperation. Jungkook looks down at the boy, noticing how his pink lips are pulled in anxiously between his teeth and his fists are clenched by his side.

Jungkook looks away, jaw tightening as he feels that familiar feeling of guilt and something else prick at his heart.

The ravenette looks back at the boy who shuffles closer to him at the sound of a bird screeching in the sky.

"Switch sides with me," Jungkook speaks up, pulling Taehyung towards his side of the footpath.

Taehyung looks at him with a confused expression. "Why?"

"If anyone were to jump out of one of these alleyways, they would have to attack me first."

Taehyung frowns, "but then you-"

Jungkook stops in his tracks, turning to face Taehyung and slightly crouching to level with the smaller boy's doe eyes.

"I can fight off monsters, Bambi, whereas you..."

He leaves the sentence hanging, letting a small smile etch over his face instead before continuing to walk.

~

They arrive at an isolated park. The sheer darkness of the park isn't very inviting but then Taehyung looks up and all his fear dissipates. The sight is absolutely beautiful.

The splashes of milky white are splattered across the sky alongside the several constellations that are smeared across the black canvas. The spectrum of bluish hues mix with the specks of glittery violet, creating the colours of ethereal beauty that leave Taehyung's mouth agape. It was like the tears of an angel and the anguish of the devil mixed together to create a painting made by the gods.

"It's beautiful," Taehyung breathes, feeling his heart stutter at the absolute picturesque sight.

Jungkook hums lowly in agreement as he lays out a large blanket. The two boy's take a seat next to each other, awaiting the arrival of Taehyung new friends.

Jungkook casually pulls out a cigarette, lighting the cancer stick up while effectively catching Taehyung attention away from the sky.

The smaller boy grimaces, watching as Jungkook inhales a mouthful of smoke before slowly letting the white substance waft out his mouth.

Taehyung musters up all his courage to ask Jungkook a question. "W-why do you smoke?"

Jungkook looks over at the boy, his expression blank. "Bad habit, I guess."

Taehyung stares at the smoke dispersing into the air for a while before saying, "it's bad."

Jungkook shrugs, "bad people do bad things."

Taehyung stares at Jungkook, wondering how bad the boy really was. Taehyung has seen the bad side of him, the homophobic, violent, hate-filled side.

But something tells him that that's not all there is to Jeon Jungkook.

The blue-haired boy looks back at the sky, relishing in the serene beauty it beholds.

After all, in the depths of the darkest most sinister town is where the prettiest stars hide.
