Chapter 27
"I was so desperate to get you out of jail, Jungkook..."
-
//PAST//
Taehyung knows what he has to do.
The blue-haired boy anxiously taps his foot against the floor as the dull ringing of the phone resonates through his ear. Each ring is mockingly nerve-wracking, it's hollow vibration like a wicked cackle against the boy's ear, teasing him for being so weak.
The line finally picks up and Taehyung has to restrain himself from ending the call. Instead, he takes a deep breath and decides to follow through with his plan.
"Dad..."
The man seems rather surprised to hear his son's voice. "Taehyung?"
Taehyung takes a deep breath before speaking. "D-Dad, I need your help."
There's a pause at the other end of the line, the only sound being the obnoxious buzzing of the phone line. Then he hears his father scoff, making his heart drop. "Help you? I thought I made it clear last time, Taehyung. For as long as you go by that ridiculous title of yours, I, nor your mother will be helping you in any which way."
Taehyung lets out a ragged breath. "Dad, please. My friend got wrongly convicted for a crime and I need to bail him out b-but I don't have any money."
He feels pathetic saying it; Like a beggar running after some people for cash. Except he's not a beggar, and these people are actually his so-called parents.
"How close are you to this person to feel the need to bail them out of jail?" Taehyung can hear it; He can hear the underlying tone of suspicion in his father's words.
He sighs into the palm of his hand, "w-we're cl-lose."
His father seems to ponder for a few seconds before he chuckles unamusedly, the laugher null of any actual joy but rather filled with disgust.
"He's another one of your faggot play toys, isn't he?" The older man spits, the venomous tone slithering through the phone line, right into Taehyung's awaiting ear.
"N-no! Dad-"
The man interrupts him. "Why would I want to help you, huh? So you can go against my words and continue to disgrace the family name?"
Taehyung pushes his hair back in frustration, his grip on the phone tightening. "Dad, he's not-"
"Forget it, Taehyung. I've already made up my mind. I will not be helping in any way if it means that disgusting mental illness of your's is going to be fueled. If you won't listen to me, why should I listen to you?"
His dad is seconds from ending the call but Taehyung finally speaks up.
"I'll stop," he says.
"Stop what?" His father's voice is gruff, tainted with annoyance towards his son.
"I'll stop being... the way I am."
His dad pauses his actions to take in the words. "You mean... you'll stop acting like one of those homosexuals." The words slips bitterly out of his tongue and Taehyung takes a courageous step to accept them.
"Yes... yes, I'll stop being gay."
He waits in anticipation for the answer, his heartbeat doubling as the silence stretches into a thin line and wraps itself around his neck.
"Do you really think I'll take your word for it?" his father finally asks, making Taehyung feel even more anxious.
"Y-yes."
The older man scoffs at that. "Really, Taehyung? Remember, you are the same boy who went behind our backs so you could fuck around with some boy because you couldn't keep it in your pants. You're the same boy who disgraced our entire family name and made me, for the first time in my entire life, feel shameful. You've made me wish I never had a bloody child. I wanted a proper child that could grow up to make me prideful. But instead? Instead, I got a sick scum like you. So why? Why should I trust you?" His father's words are filled with spite. So much spite.
Taehyung's used to the words. Used to the insults. He's like a glass. You shatter it once and it's broken. You shatter it again and it breaks even further. But eventually, it gets to a point in which it can no longer break.
Taehyung can no longer break.
But even the broken glass feels the impact of the fall.
Even broken Taehyung feels hurt by his father's words. His own father wishes he wasn't born.
"You can monitor me." He says weakly, breaking away from his thoughts.
"Huh?" The man spits, evidently fed up with the phone call.
"Get someone to look over me, to see if I'm acting like a fag. Since you don't trust me, give me a way to prove myself."
And once again, there is silence. That's really all that this phone call has been; A mix of silence and spite.
But then again, that's all it's ever been in the Kim household. Silence and spite.
"Fine." His father finally says. "I will hire someone to watch upon you at all times. To ensure you are not going out of line in any way. You know my men, Taehyung. You can never get away with anything."
Taehyung nods, despite his father not seeing. "So will you bail my friend out of jail?"
The man hums, "yes, fine. But remember son," the word sound so foreign coming from his own father. "If I catch you doing anything homosexual. I'll make sure you regret it."
//PRESENT//
Taehyung slowly gets off Jungkook and edges away from him. Retelling the story reminded him why he was staying away from the boy in the first place. Jungkook looks shocked, to put it lightly.
"Bambi, y-you-"
Taehyung sighs and runs his hand through his hair, feeling frustrated. "That's why I can't speak to you anymore. I can't be seen associating with you at all."
"But why did you avoid me in the dorm? No one can come into this building unless they have a student card."
Taehyung breathes through his nose as his eyes glance over towards the window. "Y-yeah, I know. B-but I was paranoid. M-my father has his ways, I-I-"
Jungkook notices how stressed the smaller looks and it hurts him to think that he is partially at fault for this. "Hey, c'mere," he says while patting the space next to him.
Taehyung hesitates before walking over and sitting down. His head hangs low but Jungkook doesn't need to see his face to know how anxious he feels. Jungkook pushes Taehyung's chin up to face him and then stares at the smaller's shiny doe eyes.
"Thank you."
It's a single word that holds so much sincerity that it causes a shiver to run down Taehyung's spine.
"I know that you don't have a good relationship with your parents but you put that aside so you could help me. No one's ever done something like that for me, so thank you."
Taehyung smiles at that; Smiles that adorable toothy grin that stretches across his features every time he feels happy. He is glad that he helped Jungkook.
"And don't worry Tae, they won't see us when we're in the dorms. So we can act normal in here," Jungkook says while nudging Taehyung suggestively.
The smaller whacks him gently while laughing but then stops when a thought runs through his head. "J-Jungkook?"
The ravenette nods. "Yeah?"
Taehyung seems reluctant to speak up but then he takes a deep breath and finally does so. "What exactly are we?"
Jungkook seems slightly taken aback by the question. He feels his heartbeat accelerate and his nerves spike and so he slightly clenches his fists to calm himself down. "W-what do you mean, Bambi? We're friends."
Taehyung furrows his brows, a million questions running through those big black eyes. "But friends don't do what we do. Friends d-don't kiss each other o-or have u-um," the smaller boy blushes a bright red and decides to hide his face behind his palms instead of continuing.
Jungkook, despite his panic, feels himself coo at the sight. He exhales slowly while intently staring at the boy before carefully lying down on the bed. He pulls Taehyung along with him and they both lay next to for a moment, basking in the shared body heat.
"I think..." Jungkook starts, breaking the small silence that had settled. "I think we're a special type of friends, Bambi."
Taehyung takes it in. Special friend? He thought for a while before nodding lightly. Yeah, he likes that. Special.
Jungkook also takes in his words. A special type of friend? He exhales raggedly, yeah, he likes that. Friend.
Their thoughts are so different; Both reading different pages of the same book. But despite this, their hearts beat the same, in beautiful synchronization; Unknowingly to them both.
~
Taehyung and Jungkook had made an agreement to stay the hell away from each other when they were out of their dorms. Of course, there were a few exceptions to that like choir or when the teacher made them work on their bible studies project in class. But aside from that, Jungkook was a rat and Taehyung was living in the period of the black death.
Taehyung walks down towards the shop area at school, wanting to get some food for lunch since he didn't get time to make any in the dorm. Surprisingly, after Taehyung had told his dad that he would stop being gay, his dad unfroze all his bank accounts and now Taehyung could live comfortably. He didn't know how long it would last but he was going to use the most out of this luxury.
"Taehyung!" A voice calls from behind him. He turns around to see a familiar blond running towards him.
"O-oh, hey..." Taehyung says awkwardly, scratching his nape.
The girl frowns, "Tae, do you not remember me? Emily Carvinson? The girl who you met-"
"No no, I remember you," Taehyung says quickly. "It's just- I thought that- I thought that after you found out that I was gay, you wouldn't really want to talk to me."
Emily freezes, eyes going wide. "Oh my god, Tae, no! I don't care about stuff like that. I was actually kind of happy you know, I've always wanted a gay best friend," she says while giggling.
Taehyung's eyes widen. "Y-you mean, y-you're not disgusted?"
Emily frowns, "Disgusted? Tae, why would I be disgusted? I'm not like the pricks that attend this school."
Taehyung sighs in relief, feeling his heart lighten knowing that at least someone accepted him.
"You know, I never got to see you again after that day. Never got to get your number either so couldn't even get in contact with ya," the girls says while lightly nudging the blue-head.
Taehyung smiles, "I would have popped around the cafe earlier if I had known you were cool with me being- you know."
Emily laughs as she links her arm with Taehyung's, dragging him along to a small cafe near the corner. "Gosh Taehyung. You act as if being gay is a crime or something."
Taehyung pouts slightly, "well here, it kinda is."
Emily frowns, seeing her friend look rather upset. "Hey, don't worry bout these pricks. I'm telling you, they hate the thought of men being anything less than manly and brave but put them in a slightly tricky situation, you'll have them crying on the ground and throwing a tantrum." Taehyung giggles while nodding in agreement.
They order coffee and talk over random things. Emily rants about this guy in her school who is 'cute as hell' but is as daft as a brick wall. "You win some you lose some," she says with a shrug. "But I swear he lost more than just some brain cells, Tae. God, it's so frustrating!"
Taehyung laughs and then tells her about a certain guy he's been getting to know. Emily raises her eyebrows in suspicion, taking on a protective stance but Taehyung amusedly shakes his head and tells her that they are just friends. Special friends, Taehyung secretly thinks to himself. They talk on and on and end up annoying a few other customers with their boisterous laughter and never-ending chit chat.
It felt nice to Taehyung. To talk freely without any restrictions. He feels so free, so liberated. Call him dramatic for feeling this way but it's a rare occurrence for him to feel completely like himself in this school full of homophobes. It's like wearing a mask for weeks on end and then finally taking it off and getting a breath of fresh air.
They continue their chatter for a few more minutes before Taehyung realises that he has a class soon and that he better get going. They bid each other goodbye after exchanging numbers and Taehyung walks to his next class, a light bounce to his step.
He has chemistry now, one of his favourite subjects. Damn, last night was quite the rollercoaster but today feels amazing. Taehyung is actually having a good day for once. He enters the class chirpily and waves at the teacher who confusedly waves back at him before turning back to the board.
Taehyung takes his seat at the front and eagerly waits for the teacher to start the lesson. Since he's having a good day he knows that he's going to get a lot of work done, which just makes him even happier.
The teacher turns around and Taehyung opens his book, waiting for the teacher to announce the topic of today's lesson.
"Before we start, I actually have a new student to introduce."
Taehyung raises his brows in curiosity. A new student?
The teacher walks out and then comes back in and behind him walks in a tall boy, his face hidden by the teacher.
"Everyone, this is your new classmate..."
The boy steps forward, finally revealing his face to Taehyung and the rest of the class.
"...Park Jinyoung."
And just like that, Taehyung's amazing day doesn't seem so good anymore. Taehyung feels his heart sink and his blood run cold.
No way...

A/N: hehe I know, I know. Y'all can yell at me 😂. (But hey I brought ur fav character back!!)
Okay, today's "question" is mainly because I wanna start a fat chat with you guys 😂.
What is something an author does that ruins a story for you? - Mine personally is when they sexualise raping. Like it's just so wrong in so many ways.
Also, I love you guys to the moon and back and then to Jupiter.
