Taehyung doesn't like the way the sports uniform looks on him. Much like the school uniform, it is too big on him, drowning his small body with layers of oversized fabric. He turns away from the mirror with a frown and walks back into the bedroom. He is met with the sight of his roommate, dressed in similar attire. But why does it look so much better on him?
The sports t-shirt slightly clings onto Jungkook's body, showing off his toned muscles and highlighting his light tan. Taehyung looks down at himself and then back at Jungkook, who doesn't even seem to notice the boy's presence. The blue-haired boy silently grumbles, feeling annoyed at his tiny body. Jungkook's mere presence makes him feel unmasculine.
Taehyung startles when those dark charcoal irises meet his, realising that he was just blatantly staring at his roommate. The smaller boy turns away immediately, trying to hide his embarrassed blush.
Things haven't been so smooth sailing with the pair. In fact, ever since that whole confrontation with Jungkook and the boy declaring that he isn't gay, the two roommates have barely spoken a word to each other. The awkward tension that rests in the room is so tense that it can be cut open by a knife. The only form of any possible communication they both have is the plate of food that Taehyung leaves near Jungkook's bed every morning.
This act of kindness doesn't fail to confuse the ravenette, who wonders why Taehyung still makes him breakfast when he's been nothing but rude to him. Taehyung, being the kind-hearted boy he is, deems that breakfast is too important to not eat and some tension should never get in the way of food.
Taehyung pulls on his running shoes, cringing at the empty space he feels inside the shoe. Not only are his clothes big, but so are his shoes. He shrugs away his frustrations and picks up his sports bag, carrying the large bag towards the door as a pair of black beady eyes watches his small figure walk away.
Taehyung opens the door, feeling utterly unprepared for today.
Kim Taehyung is not an athlete. So today, athletics day, is bound to be hell.
~
"GET INTO YOUR GRADES," a loud booming voice shouts, startling the talkative students.
Taehyung rushes into the crowd of seniors, feeling utterly small compared to the beast sized boys standing next to him.
"Okay boys," a loud voice calls out, grabbing everyone's attention. "Your year group coordinator will assign you to a partner, after you have found your partner, please head over to the showground where the events will soon commence."
Taehyung crosses his fingers, hoping with all his might that he gets someone nice.
"Park Bogum and Hwang Kai, Justin Pupils and Min Chan, Park Jimin and Jeon Jungkook."
Taehyung lets out a breath of relief, thankful that he isn't Jungkook's partner. He doesn't know what he would do if he had to play any sort of sport with that boy.
However, Taehyung's relief is only short-lived.
"Kim Taehyung and Min Yoongi."
Min Yoongi?! You mean the boy who absolutely hates Taehyung's entire existence merely due to the fact that he is gay. HE'S Taehyung's partner?!
Taehyung instantly tries to run upon hearing the name of his partner. His thought process was bordering between fight or flight but he took one look at his petit body and decided flight. He tries to run past the massive crowd, excusing himself as he pushes past large bodies but the task is somewhat difficult. Most of the boys don't even realise the tiny body trying to push past them so Taehyung struggles to make his way out of the crowd.
Taehyung sighs in relief when he sees an opening, he starts running as fast as possible towards the clear space. He smiles in victory, seeing how he is nearly there. Just a few more steps and he won't have to deal with any bullies. Just a few more steps.
Or so he thought.
Bang!
Taehyung feels his head spin as his body lurches into a hard surface. At first, he thinks it a brick wall but then he looks up and sees the familiar pair of charcoal eyes staring down at him. Jeon Jungkook.
Of course, out of all people, he just had to run into him.
Jungkook furrows his eyebrows, staring confusedly at the boy that is pressed against his chest. Taehyung flushes a bright pink and immediately spins around, trying to create space between him and the ravenette. But luck is certainly not on Taehyung's side today. Actually, luck is never on Taehyung's side and today is just proof of that.
As the blue-head turns around to step away from Jungkook, he bumps into another figure. A pale-skinned, dark-eyed boy who stares at him with nothing but malice.
"Hey there, fag," Yoongi calls out with a grin. Taehyung internally cringes at the name but manages to keep a straight face.
"Hi," he replies, forcing down the stutter that threatens to escape his mouth.
The blond smirks, lifting his sleek brows in a tantalizing manner. "Heard you're my partner for today's events, is that true?"
Taehyung frantically shakes his head, "n-no, it's not."
Yoongi chuckles, his pearly white teeth acting as nothing but a mockery to the fear instilled in little Taehyung. "Well, doesn't matter. I choose you to be my partner."
Taehyung shoots up his eyebrows in surprise. Yoongi wants him to be his PARTNER? No way can this be because he wants him in his team. Taehyung braces himself, fearing the true intentions that lie behind that wicked smile.
~
The events aren't exactly a roller coaster for Taehyung because there are no up and downs. It's only one big fall that gets steeper and more gut-wrenching as it goes.
When Taehyung did the high jump, he nearly broke his back from jumping onto the floor rather than the mat. Yoongi had watched him amusedly as he writhed in pain.
Then came the shot put. And oh god.
Taehyung's noodle arms nearly came off with the heavyweight as he threw it. His small body flung forward and he fell onto his knees, the shot put landing only a few centimetres away from him. His partner watched with a smirk before taking his turn. The blond had effortlessly thrown the heavyweight as if it was a beach ball and had claimed the applause of the audience watching. It made sense now why Yoongi wanted him to be his partner. Taehyung made him look so much better when he played. With embarrassment, Taehyung picked himself up and walked over to the next event. Long jump.
The long jump was simply laughable. While his blond-haired partner went ahead and scored a whopping 10 meters, Taehyung had run and jumped too early, scoring himself a mere 2.5 metres. Luckily for Taehyung, Jimin was in the event next to him and had watched him jump. The blond had aggressively cheered for the smaller boy, despite his lacking score. Taehyung deemed this as the highlight of his day, despite being laughed at by the boys behind him right after.
Finally came the relay races. Finally came Taehyung's death.
Although you had a partner for all the events, the relays were the only event in which you and your partner really worked together. Taehyung knows how he isn't exactly the best runner in the block and he also knows how competitive his so-called partner is. He doesn't want to imagine what Yoongi would do if he scored them last place.
Taehyung stupidly tries to hold his breath, thinking that if he fainted from oxygen deprivation he wouldn't have to participate in the relay.
However, he doesn't faint. He just turns really red and then falls into a raging coughing fit. Once the boy is done coughing up all his internal organ, his partner comes up behind him and harshly drags him to the starting line.
A surge of panic rushes through Taehyung's tiny body as he is pushed into the race track. Between him and Yoongi, he is the last runner, meaning that he had the duty of crossing the finish line. The blue head looks back at Yoongi with desperate eyes, his hands shaking as he tries to beg the boy to have mercy on him. However, the blond is long gone and is already getting into his starting position.
Taehyung's heart pounds against his chest, his blood running cold at the thought of losing. He takes a deep breath and decides to face the front, also getting into position. He turns his head to the left and of course. OF COURSE. The universe hates him. Because next to him, is none other than Jeon Jungkook.
The ravenette looks as calm as ever, his hands propped on the ground ready to go. He catches Taehyung stares and turns to look at him with dull, almost lifeless eyes.
Taehyung gulps and looks away. Not only did Taehyung have to run a race without giving himself a mental pep talk, but he also had to run the race alongside one of the most athletic people in school. Well, Taehyung assumes he's athletic from the ways he's built, he doesn't exactly know for sure.
Taehyung's thoughts are abruptly interrupted by a metal stick being handed to him. He looks up and realises that it's Yoongi who is giving him the stick, indicating that it is his turn to run.
Without a second thought, the small boy starts running. He pumps his arms and legs hard and breathes heavily as he races down the track. Taehyung thinks he's doing pretty well until a black shape zooms past him. It takes him a second to realise that that black shape is actually Jeon Jungkook.
Taehyung furrows his eyebrows, determined to do better after seeing his roommate run so fast. He increases his pace, allowing his small legs to stretch wide and carry him further.
Taehyung is nowhere near Jungkook but he still feels ecstatic because he hasn't seen any other people run past him meaning he is second place. Taehyung has never even come close to second place. With a new surge of energy, he runs harder, steadily increasing his pace as he approaches the finish line.
He sees the finish line come closer.
And closer.
Closer.
He's almost there...
But then God must have seen his little gay ass trying to succeed because,
CRASH!
The loose-fitting shoes that Taehyung reluctantly wore this morning decide it is the perfect time to come off and they fly off his feet. Taehyung trips over his own legs and topples onto the ground with a loud thud, his breath running out of him as he gets winded.
The boy watches with grief as all the other runners run past him and cross the finish line, leaving him to lay there pathetically at last place.
He takes a few seconds to get up and brush himself off. He looks around and see's a few concerned eyes. Most, however, look at him with either a disgusted snarl or with mocking mirth.
Taehyung decides that he needs to get himself away from the crowd so he quickly (as fast as he can with his sore body) heads over to the changing rooms.
He sits himself down on one of the benches and tries to calm his shaking heart. He takes a deep breath, ignoring the pain that surges through his body. Just as he's about to think through the events that just occurred, a body of sweaty males enter the room. Among them are a pair of dark eyes that causes his blood to run cold. Yoongi looks enraged as he marches down the room towards Taehyung.
"You dumb fag!" He screams while approaching the small boy. Taehyung instantly cowers away from the other's harsh glare.
"WE FUCKING LOST BECAUSE OF YOU!"
The yelling attracts many eyes and Taehyung, in his panicked state of mind, notices that a pair of those eyes belong to his roommate.
Suddenly, Yoongi grabs him by the collar and lifts him off the chair. The small boy dangles in the air, his eyes widened in fear as he stares at the fuming boy.
"GAY FUCKS LIKE YOU SHOULD JUST DIE!"
Taehyung flinches at the words. They sound all too familiar.
I CAN'T EXPECT A GAY PIECE OF SHIT AS MY SON! HE CAN EITHER BECOME STRAIGHT OR JUST KILL HIMSELF!
Taehyung squirms in Yoongi's hold, pleading the boy with his eyes to let him go. The boy does let him go. He throws Taehyung onto the ground and watches menacingly as the boy's small body hits the concrete.
Taehyung let's out a groan as he curls into himself. He notices how the crowd watches him like hawks, their eyes taking in all the action as if watching an animated video game.
Taehyung's eyes once again meet Jungkook's who stares at him with an unreadable expression. The ravenette opens his mouth to speak and for a second Taehyung has hope. Hope that the boy would speak up for him.
But then Jungkook closes his mouth wordlessly, continuing to stare at the smaller boy with the same dull expression.
Taehyung feels his heart drop. He had hope that maybe, just maybe, he meant even the smallest fraction of something to Jungkook. But he guesses not. He feels stupid.
Stupid for naively letting himself have hope after all that happened.
Before Yoongi can continue to torment him, he decides to get himself up and escape the situation. His small body aches as he pushes himself off the floor. Everyone stares, not bothering to help the boy as he painfully gets up.
Taehyung winces before slowly limping away. Yoongi watches with a smirk as the broken boy exits, feeling proud of himself for destroying him.
~
Taehyung walks through the empty halls of the school, daring himself not to cry. He tightly seals away his emotions in his overfilling bottle and holds back the tears that threaten to fall. He can't cry. He can't seem any weaker than he is in front of these predators that prey off weakness. He needs to say strong. At least mentally.
Taehyung looks around for a secluded area, needing some quiet place to rest his mind. He can't go back to his dorm with the risk of seeing Jungkook. He can't face the boy without feeling somewhat hurt again.
Taehyung sighs deeply as he continues walking. He glides his eyes over any possible place he could go to and they catch sight of a sign saying, out of bounds.
He walks closer to the door and stares at the sign. He might be a goody-two-shoes but he's also a curious cat. He looks around to see if anyone is watching but no one is there so he tries and turns the doorknob.
The handle twists and to his surprise, the door opens. He slowly peeks in through the door and finds a stair-case. He let's curiosity get the best of him and walks up the staircase, wincing in pain every time his sore body takes a step.
Once he arrives at the top, he is met with another door. He frowns, debating on whether or not he should open it. He reluctantly lets the devil on his shoulder win the debate and opens the door, which, also to his surprise, isn't locked.
He is met with a picturesque sight. Ocean like skies filled with cotton white clouds spread across evenly in various shapes and patterns rest in front of his eyes. It takes him a moment to register where he is. The school's rooftop. He looks at the door behind him and then back at the serene view.
He hesitantly edges away from the door, his eyes basking in the world's natural beauty. He takes a seat on the cold stone floor and looks up at the sky above him.
The world is such a beautiful place. It holds so much beauty and tranquillity.
Taehyung looks around at the concrete walls and floors that make up the roof of this school.
But within the beauty of this world, there are traps. Vicious traps that encage you from ever reaching that peace the world has to offer.
Taehyung doesn't know what he has done to be trapped in these prestigiously hideous walls. He doesn't know what he's done to be beaten down for living his life. He doesn't know what he's done to deserve such hatred from his own species.
Or maybe he does.
Taehyung looks at his slightly blistered palms. Maybe it's because he's gay. Maybe this is his punishment for being different. Maybe even this beautiful world hates fags like him.
When Taehyung first stepped into this trap named Helville high, he thought that, just maybe, the world might have his back, help him get through this hellhole.
But the more and more Taehyung stays here, enclosed behind deceivingly white walls and trapped behind a toxic mask of masculinity, the more he realises how wrong he was.
The world doesn't have his back. No one does.
