I'm Alive, You Don't Know I'm Here
Flashback to Freshmen Year.
This was it. I made it. To America.
Specifically, New York City. I'm so excited for this adventure.
"Hi, I'm Alexander Hamilton! You guys can call me Alex, though." I smile as the lovely woman opens the door.
"Hi, I'm Grace. I'm going to be your new foster mom, and I'm so glad to meet you." She smiles at me.
All of a sudden, a little boy runs downstairs. "Hiiii!!!" He exclaims, latching onto my legs. I chuckle and pat his back gently.
"Oh, Alex, I'm so sorry. Here- James, let go of him." Grace sighs and pulls the five maybe six year old off of me and holds him. He smiles brightly at me.
"Hi, I'm James! Are you my new brother?"
"Well, foster brother, honey." Grace says.
I smile gently at him. I once had a brother named James. Peter told me he was in a better place now, which I knew meant he didn't make it in Nevis. Nobody did. But I'm not in Nevis anymore.
I look back at my social worker and nod at her. "I think I'm going to like it here."
The summer ended soon and Grace was sending me to high school at last. It was just me, Grace, and James all summer long, but I didn't mind it that much. They were a really nice family, and were great to me.
"Alright, you've got everything you need, Alex. You're all set for your first day of high school. I'll see you later, okay?"
I nod at her and then walk in the big doors to the high school in front of me, struggling to get through the narrow and teenage-filled hallways.
"Well, look at this pathetic little kid." A feminine voice calls. I continue walking, not knowing she was talking to me.
It was made obvious that she was, however, when she shoved me against the locker. I look up at the dark skinned girl in a pink blouse in fear.
"What's your name, kid?"
"I-I-I'm Alexander....Alexander H-Hamilton.." I stutter.
She raises an eyebrow and then looks at the two people behind her- a girl in a white shirt and blue skirt, and a boy in ripped jeans with dozens of freckles. The girl in front of me smirks back at me.
"So you're the little immigrant who's new to America, hm?" She asks tauntingly.
I blush gently and take a deep breath. "How-how do you know that? Who t-told you?"
"I have my sources." She smirks. "I'm Angelica. This is Eliza and John. Remember us, kid, we'll be around all of high school."
She gives me another shove towards the lockers before walking off, the other two chuckling and following behind her.
I stare in fear as they walk past and then somebody walks up to me. "Hey, are you alright? I saw them pestering you."
I snap my attention towards the taller person in front of me. He wore a bandanna around his head, and had really nice pants. That may be an odd thing to say, but I really liked his pants.
"Y-yeah, I'm fine. I was just... Lost... They weren't much help." I rub the back of my neck and the male chuckles softly.
"Yeah, you won't get help from them. They're nothing but trouble." He smiles and sticks his hand out. "I'm Hercules Mulligan, by the way."
I smile softly and shake his hand in response. "Alexander Hamilton. Nice to meet you."

"Hey, Alex, how was school today?" Grace asks as I walk through the door with little James. James ran to Grace and she picked him up, his giggling making me smile gently.
"It was alright. Same as the past couple months, ya know." I shrug gently.
"Well, boys, I have someone I want you two to meet." She says.
A girl around my age in a teal tank top and dark jeans walks down the stairs. She smiles shyly at us. "Hi, I'm Theodosia."
"She's your new foster sister."
I smile brightly. Our little family was growing, and it was amazing. James squeals happily and jumps out of his moms arms, giving Theodosia the same welcome he gave me. I chuckle gently and shake my head at the six year old's actions. "Is she going to my school?"
"Actually, I'm going to enroll her into a private all-girl's school. I figure if she can make it in, she should get the chance to go there." Grace explains, and I nod.

"Theodosia, Alexander, come downstairs a moment please." I look up at Theo and raise an eyebrow, but we go downstairs as instructed.
"Yeah, Grace?" Theodosia asks. Grace was smiling brightly at us.
"Kids, you've been in the house for a year now.. You know little James loves you guys, and I do, too. We were thinking of.. Well, officially becoming a family." She hands us both papers and we stare in shock at them.
"You want to... Adopt us?" I ask, not sure how I should react.
"Well, you know, you guys are growing up so fast. You're already fifteen, sophomores in high school! Soon you'll be graduating, and I want you guys to have a family to come back to, officially." She smiles brightly.
I look over at Theodosia and she gulps slightly. "I...I don't know... Can I get a little bit of time to think about it?"
"Of course, I don't want to rush you guys. Take all the time you need, I know it's a big step. Just let me know, okay?" She nods at us and we nod back.

"So, what did you guys talk about yesterday?" The little eight year old asks as I pick him up from school.
I smile gently and pull out the adoption paper Grace handed me the day before. "Grace is thinking about adopting Theo and I.." I tell him.
He looks up at me and smiles brightly. "Really? So we'll be actually brothers?"
I chuckle. "Yeah, I suppose so."
I hand him the paper and he looks over it, gasping softly. "That's so cool..."
Suddenly the wind picks up and blows the paper out of his hand and I gasp. "James, don't lose that paper!" I say out of instinct. He panics and rushes after it, right into the middle of the street.
"Don't worry, I got it, Alex!" He triumphantly grabs it and shows it off, but I'm worried about a bigger problem, rushing at forty miles per hour straight towards him.
"James, watch out-!"
But it was too late. The car hit the little eight year old, knocking him unconscious in the middle of the road. The driver steps out of the vehicle and looks at him in shock, before looking at me. His eyes widen and he shakes his head. "I'm sorry, kid." He rushes to get back into his car and drives off, and I run to James, shaking him gently.
"James, James, wake up..Come on, James.." I pull out the phone Grace had given me and called 9-1-1, hoping they got there in time.
It was too late, though. As Grace, Theodosia, and I sat in the waiting room of the hospital, we realized the truth. James wasn't coming back. Not from this.
"Grace, I'm so sorry, really. I tried to stop him, but-"
"Shut up! I can't believe I even took you in in the first place! You ungrateful little piece of-"
"Grace!" Theodosia interrupts. We were home from the hospital, standing in the livingroom, and Grace was yelling at me like no other. I had never seen this side of her before.
"I'm.. I'm sorry... I'm so, so, so sorry.." I repeat.
She shakes her head. "And to think I was going to adopt you."
I stare in shock up at her. "You're.. You're not going to adopt me?"
"After all that? Hell no! You're leaving my house as soon as possible!" She shouts.
"If he's leaving, then I'm leaving, too." Theodosia stands up for me. "I know you don't want to lose me, but I'll call CPS. I'll be out your door so fast if you get rid of him."
Grace hesitates and then sighs. "You're lucky to have someone watching over you. Be careful though, little missy. Or you might end up dead in the middle of the road, too." She says angrily before walking out the house, slamming the door behind her.
I sink to the floor and curl into a ball, holding my knees to my chest and crying softly. I was this close to having a family again. And I messed it all up. I lost another brother, another mother...
Theodosia comes up to me and goes to hug me, but I push her back gently, shaking my head. "No, no she's right, be careful. I only bring bad fortune to the people around me, it's better I don't get adopted anyway."
"Well, I'm not getting adopted until you do, Alex." She says, rubbing my back gently.
"But.. Grace loves you.. You didn't do anything to make her not want you... You guys would be a happy family.." I say, trying to wipe away my tears.
She shakes her head. "I don't love Grace. She's not my mom. My mom was a lovely woman from Jersey, not a woman who turns on those around her when an accident occurs.."
"I should've stopped him.. I never should have handed him that paper.." I mumble more to myself.
"Alex, stop." Theodosia warns. "It's not your fault, it was an accident. I'll be here to help you, okay?"
I nod slowly and finally let her hug me, smiling in the warmth of the embrace.

"Hey, Alex who's that kid over there?" Hercules asks, pointing to a tall teen sitting in the corner of the lunch room by himself.
I look over at him. He seemed sad, and lonely, and I unfortunately knew that feeling ah too well. "I don't know, why don't we go find out? Get to him before John Laurens and the Schuylers can get to him."
He nods and we walk over to the table he was sitting by himself at. He looks up at us in shock and we smile at him. "Hey, I'm Alexander, and this is Hercules. Are you new here?"
He nods shyly. "Yeah, I just moved here from France." He says, a very thick french accent preventing him from speaking English clearly.
"Oh, how cool. I'm from Ireland." Hercules smiles widely. "Been a while since I've been there."
"And I'm from the Caribbean." I say, shoving my hands in my pockets. "I moved here Freshman year."
"Oh, so you two are immigrants as well?" He asks, smiling gently.
"Well, by definition." I chuckle.
Hercules sits down across from the other male and I sit next to him. "What's your name?"
He thinks about it a moment, before nodding. "It's really long and complicated, but you can just call me Lafayette, or Laf."
I nod at him. "It's nice to meet you, Lafayette. You a junior, too?"
He nods and suddenly I hear snickering coming from behind us, causing me to mentally groan. "Looks like the two immigrants found the other immigrant." A certain middle child giggles.
I turn around and flip them off. "Is there ever going to be a day where you stop with the unnecessary bullying?"
The four of them think about it and then shake their heads. "Not likely." The newest addition to the group says. She was the youngest Schuyler sister, and had just started high school this year. Yeah, a freshman helped three juniors beat me up daily, I know it's pathetic.
They do a bit more teasing before walking away and Lafayette just looks back at us. "Well, they seem... nice..."
"They beat Alex up every day, they're just bad people."
I shrug. "It doesn't bother me, really."
"It would bother me, honestly.."
A week later we got along really well with Lafayette. It's as if he was a part of our crew the entire time. After school one day, I was walking out of debate practice when a certain freckled teen walked up to me. "Hey, Bastard Orphan, you got a minute?"
"I've got a lot of minutes, but I'd rather not waste any on you."
