Hypocrisy (John X Reader)
"You shit."
"Hey, it's your fault for leaving a perfectly fine computer right in front of me."
John groaned and leaned on Y/n. "I swear I'm going to find a way to either erase your memory or get rid of these stupid musicals." Y/n grinned and pecked the boy on the cheek. "You know you love the songs. Especially 'Dead Girl Walking'," She teased. John's face went bright red and took the laptop from Y/n, closing the previous tab, which was blaring Be More Chill. "You infected it. It was such an innocent thing!" The dramatic boy cried. He flopped onto Y/n's lap who chuckled and kissed his forehead. "So were you till you became my boyfriend." John smiled and leaned up to kiss the girl who complied. You could say they had a good relationship, besides the hilarious hatred for musicals and the love for musicals.
"I'll be back soon, okay Egghead?" John groaned at the nickname, but kissed the girl goodbye. Now what will he do? Do what he was meant to do.
"John?" Y/n put the groceries into the fridge and looked around the house. She heard faint guitar from their shared bedroom, a familiar tune making her smile. She crept up to the door and opened it slightly, wanting to hear the song clearer.
"He said,
There's nothing like her smile
Sort of subtle, and perfect, and real.
He said,
You never knew how wonderful
That smile could make someone feel.
And he knew,
Whenever you get bored
You scribble stars on the cuff of your jeans.
And he noticed,
That you still fill out those quizzes
That they put in those teen magazines."
Y/n covered her mouth to keep from laughing and crying from happiness. John Egbert, her John Egbert who hated all fucking musicals, was learning one of the sweetest songs.
"But he kept it all
Inside his head.
What he saw, he left unsaid.
And thought he wanted to,
He couldn't have talked to you.
He couldn't find a way.
And he would always say,
If I could tell her,
Tell her everything I see.
If I could tell her,
How she's everything to me.
But we're a million worlds apart.
And I don't know how I would even start.
If I could tell her.
If I could tell her."
John paused when the voices of Ben and Laura, or Evan and Zoe, talked for a few seconds. He chuckled and went back to the chords.
"He thought,
You look really pretty-ER-
It looked pretty cool when you put
Indigo streaks in your hair.
And he wondered how you learned to dance
Like all the rest of the world wasn't there.
But he kept it all inside his head
What he saw and left unsaid.
If I could tell her,
Tell her everything I see.
If I could tell her,
How she's everything to me.
But we're a million worlds apart.
And I don't know how I would even start.
If I could tell her.
If I could tell her."
The guitar was sounding more hurried and John's voice went a little louder, letting Y/n creep up near him and look at the lyrics with him without noticing.
"But what do you do when there's this great divide?
And what do you do when the distance is too wide?
And how do you say.."
The guitar went softer and John's voice went softer, making Y/n smile with tears in her eyes. The happiness made her leak out and she breathed slowly. John looked at her surprised and red in the face, but kept singing the song.
"I love you?
I love you.
I love you!
I love you.
But we're a million worlds apart.
And I don't know how I would even start."
John leaned in close and Y/n went close as well, smiling brightly.
"If I could tell her.
If I could."
John closed the space in between them and placed a hand on Y/n's cheek. Y/n smiled into the kiss and wrapped her arms around neck, squishing them closer. When the couple separated, John pulled the girl into his lap. He nuzzled into her collarbone when she started chuckling. "What's so funny?" He asked in a muffled voice. Y/n started messing with his hair and whispered in his ear, "You are a fucking hypocrite." He laughed and kissed the girl's neck. "Yeah, but you love me." "Yeah, I do." A comfortable silence left the couple smiling and sitting together. Occasionally John would leave a kiss on Y/n's cheek or neck, making the girl giggle. "Stop, you're going to eventually kiss me to death," Y/n joked, only making John hold onto her tighter and kiss her on the lips. "John," She whined, trying to get out of the boy's arms. "You can only do this if you sing more musical numbers then." John froze and flushed red from the last statement. He cleared his throat and the rest of the day was spent with songs, laughter, cuddles, and kisses, one of the best afternoons the couple had ever loved.
**Again, I just need to write, so I'm sorry that it's short. I love that song and this guy I liked actually sent me a text that was telling me thanks for being there for him, based on this song. It made cry so bad, and I wanted to legit just hug him to death, but he wasn't there. After that I noticed his Insta account profile picture had the "If I Could Tell Her" cover, so... Yeah, this song is dear to me now. I hope you enjoyed this short lil oneshot!**
