In the Freezer
(The first two sentences of this were the prompt given to me for my Writing 101 class)
The freezer door wasn't supposed to shut behind them. That wasn't part of the plan. Karkat turned on his heel to glower back at his colleague who was supposed to be holding the door. Said colleague, Dave Strider, looked just as surprised as Karkat. His hands immediately raised in self defense as he insisted, "It wasn't me. I swear to God it wasn't me."
The smaller of the two shivered and hissed irritably, "You were the one holding the door, idiot! How couldn't it have been you?"
"Someone shut it from the outside. They must've slammed their whole body against it or else it wouldn't have shut like that. It's locked. I already tried to get it to open," the blonde replied, rubbing his arms in an attempt to warm himself.
Karkat shouldered past him and tugged on the handle in an attempt to open it himself, unfortunately to no avail. Dave was right. It was locked. Groaning hopelessly, he leaned against the cold metal of the freezer wall and slid down to the floor. "Great. It was probably John again. He's always doing things like this."
Dave plopped down beside him. "When do you think he'll let us out?"
"Maybe when you two finally learn to get along!" A nasally voice cooed from behind the door.
Karkat's small fists slammed against it as he snarled, "Vriska, open up!" How many of their coworkers were in on this?
She scoffed indifferently. "What are you going to do about it, shrimp? It was Terezi's idea, not mine. You two fight all the time, and everyone's sick of it! Terezi and I were the only ones who would put this plan into motion. We know everyone will thank us for this."
"You two can keep put until you can learn to get along!" Terezi chimed in. The duo laughed at their little stunt before their footsteps receded from the door.
Karkat crossed his arms over his chest. "So we have a few minor disagreements in the workplace. I didn't know that constituted being locked in a freezer," Dave droned on, picking mindlessly at his fingernails. "They basically all jumped on the band wagon. John, Terezi, Vriska... I'd be willing to bet that everyone here is sitting outside waiting for us to kiss and make up."
His companion shoved him, his eyes narrowing. "First of all, there will be no kissing of any kind. Secondly, they aren't 'minor disagreements'. We get into borderline fistfights while screaming our heads off on a daily basis."
"I still don't get why you hate me so much," Dave mused, draping his arm around Karkat's shoulder. "I thought things were going pretty well between us."
The latter huffed and stood, placing his hands on his small hips with his lips pressed in a tight, thin line. "Why is it that I always seem to find myself in these 'questionable' positions with you? Do you not understand how personal you get with me?"
Flushing a light pink, the blond shrugged, toying with a string on his jacket. "I don't know." He then paused and glanced up at Karkat. "Wait, do you think I'm oblivious to fact that I do things like that with you?"
He shuffled his feet in response. "Not oblivious. Just not aware of how it can be interpreted. You just always feel the need to be touching me in some way, shape, or form."
Dave sighed softly, rubbing his temples. "Are you really that clueless?"
Karkat blinked, studying him a moment before frowning. "How am I the clueless one?"
The other raises an eyebrow, looking unamused. "You mean to say you haven't been picking up on all the hints? The banter and constant desire to be close to you wasn't a dead giveaway?"
"Um." Swallowing thickly, Karkat rubbed his arms and paces. "I don't know..."
Rolling his eyes, Dave took off his jacket and draped it over the smaller male's shoulders. "You're a shivering wreck. We need to get you warmed up. We can talk about this later, okay?"
Karkat shook his head and frowned, his teeth chattering. "I want to know what you're talking about. I don't understand."
"What don't you understand?" Dave asked patiently.
The troll hesitated. "Are you saying... I mean... You have a reason for bugging me and getting all handsy with me, don't you?"
The human nodded. "I do."
Karkat looked away. "What is it then?" He received no response. After a minute filled with silence, he turned his attention back to Dave. "Well--?" This time, he got a response, though it wasn't one he was expecting.
Dave's soft lips were on his, his hand resting almost cautiously on his shoulder. The kiss ended as quickly as it began. All Karkat could do was gawk, completely dumbfounded by his coworkers actions.
Dave rubbed the back of his neck and muttered sheepishly. "We should probably talk about that once we get out of this freezer and into the warmth. Don't you agree?" Karkat nodded meekly, his fingers grazing his lips. Offering him a small smile, Dave turned towards the door and kicked it harshly. "There's no more juicy gossip to be heard. We've made up. Open the door before I press charges."
The lock immediately clicked, the sound of shuffling feet audible from behind the thick metal. Karkat fully slipped on the jacket and looked up at Dave. "You know, I'd be upset if we couldn't keep our banter going. Even if we just kept it playful. I don't need them thinking I'm going soft."
Clapping Karkat on the back, he chuckled and nodded. "Yeah, sure. Whatever you say, stupid. But are we okay now?"
Karkat grinned and bumped his hip lightly with Dave's. "I guess so. But don't you dare tell anyone I said so."
Dave's arm wrapped around Karkat as he ushered him out of the freezer. "Fine by me. Now let's get out of here. It's freezing."
Karkat purred softly, nuzzling into Dave's warmth. "I couldn't agree more."
