BILBO BAGGINS was quite young at only ten years old but would never forget the night that a small baby in a basket was lain upon their doorstep at Bag End.

It had been late, but the voice of his mother screaming for his father woke him, and his large feet that were just starting to grow a thin patch of hair padded silently down the hallway as he ran to find his parents. And there Belladonna and Bungo Baggins stood, looking down at the intricately woven basket. Bilbo pressed his head between their legs and looked on with wide eyes, seeing the contents.

It was a small child with hair as white as the fuzzy dandelions that were beginning to sprout and blow away with the wind. She was awake, green eyes silently staring up at them all as her thumb was jammed in her pouty mouth. She had pink cheeks, and a thick, dark blue blanket was swaddled around her. On top of the bundle containing the baby was a letter, which Bungo reached for as Belladonna knelt down, scooping the child up in her arms.

"What does it say?" Bilbo questioned curiously as he moved to his mother's side, staring at the child in awe.

Bungo, a bit flustered, cleared his throat as he read the note aloud.

"It is with haste that I write this letter. Even now, as I do, more and more of our home is burned and ransacked by the Orcs. Something dark has reappeared in Middle-Earth, and it yearns to eradicate the rest of our kind. The rest of the Nymphs.

It is why I beg of you to take in my sweet Calypso, as she will never be safe. Not while we are being hunted. I need her to grow in a home full of warmth and love. I need her to never know hardship or fear. I need her to live.

She is so very special, as you will learn as she grows and develops her abilities. Nurture her as she so deserves, I beg.

Protect my daughter,
Authusia Maethion."

"A Nymph!" Bilbo exclaimed before staring at the child in wonder that was looking at his mother with wide eyes as she caressed the baby's hair. "In our house?"

"She's being hunted by Orcs, this here says," Bungo said with a nervous frown.

Belladonna took one knowing look at her husband and squared her shoulders. "And we will protect her. They'll never suspect a Nymph is living amongst Hobbits."

Bungo could see on his wife's face that she would not be swayed. And so, he sighed and nodded before stepping closer. He studied the child and smiled lightly, reaching to run a fingertip along her nose, making Calypso scrunch her small face up.

"I do suppose having a baby in the house once more sounds delightful," he said, earning a beaming smile from his wife now that he wasn't putting up a fight.

"Calypso Baggins," Belladonna said with a dreamy sigh. She'd already fallen in love with the child. "Bilbo, isn't she a dear?"

Bilbo hummed and stood on his toes, getting a better look. "Mother, I do believe she has your eyes," he said with an amused grin.

It made his parents chuckle and shake their heads.

"Yes," Belladonna said with a smile as Calypso grasped her finger tightly, "yes, she does."

Calypso's first word was Bilbo's name - or at least, an attempt at it. But 'Bulbo' was close enough for the thirteen-year-old to brag about to all his friends and family members.

It scandalized the town when the Baggins' took in the child, claiming her as one of their own. But very soon, as Calypso began wandering around, introduced to the people of Hobbiton by her parents, they began to love her. She was always smiling and giggling, the happiest child any had ever seen.

When she was around five - they didn't know her exact age or even her birthday - her powers began to manifest.

During supper, she threw a rare fit as Bungo put carrots in front of her. Bilbo thought he'd be sneaky and steal some off her plate, but carrots were Calypso's favorite.

She screeched Bilbo's name and glared at him, failing to reach him with her pudgy hands as he slipped away with the food. Only to stop as the water from Belladonna's cup shot out and splashed Bilbo right in the face. He was so stunned that the carrots dropped to the ground, and everyone was too shocked to bother picking them up at first.

Calypso's fit had ended as she giggled and clapped her hands from the display she created.

From then on, Calypso's love for the water was evident - clearly, she was a Water Nymph and not a Wood Nymph, which Bungo and Belladonna had been pondering since they received her. Her powers were tied to her emotions, so it was a good thing she was raised in a rather calm environment. But sometimes, it got the better of her. There were times when the teakettle exploded or times when the lake near their house made great waves because Calypso was near and in an unsteady or foul mood.

But for the most part, her abilities were under control.

However, on the dark day that her parents - because Bungo and Belladonna were her parents as far as she was concerned - drowned in the lake, Calypso's love for the water died out, as did her use of her powers. How could she stand to control something that had taken the people she loved from her? What use was being able to control water if she wasn't there to save her parents the day they died?

Bilbo had been distraught, and his sister inconsolable as they mourned together. But eventually, because they had each other, they recovered and moved on.

Bilbo carried out his duties as head of the household while Calypso began working at the Green Dragon Inn as a server, bringing in money to start carrying her weight even though Bilbo didn't expect her to work so young. But it gave her things to do and an opportunity to take her mind off of her loss.

Despite not being a Hobbit, the people knew her and liked her well enough, though some thought she was a bit odd given that she was a Nymph. But aside from the fact that she wore shoes, she looked fairly 'Hobbit-like' as Nymphs were short in stature. Even Bilbo was half an inch taller than her - something he bragged about quite a lot. She dressed as everyone did and acted as everyone did, though she didn't eat as many meals as a Hobbit. Three meals a day at Bilbo's side was all she needed.

Life was simple for Calypso in Hobbiton. Maybe it wasn't the life she dreamed of - a life in the woods near a body of water, surrounded by others of her kind. But it was a life she loved nevertheless.

Bag End was home and always would be, she figured.

After all, nothing exciting ever happened to those that lived in Hobbiton.
