Chapter 49
7:40 pm
"So you have been wandering around on the streets by yourself on an empty stomach all day? Fat Dog, why?" Pops questioned. Scarfing down a platter of cookies, Duke answered, "Hey, it's not my fault I got dragged into this mess that Snowball got us into. I should've been dining all day!" Swallowing some Jello next, the mutt added, "And I wasn't by myself all day."
"Where are the others?" Rooster ordered sternly, shoving his way into the conversation. Holding up his paws in defense, Duke yelped, "Hey! Easy there! I don't really know where everyone is right now! Last time I saw anyone, it was Max and Gidget! They're not far from the dog park!" Sighing heavily, Rooster walked away and barked, "I'll be back!"
"Interesting. Who else have you seen?" Leonard asked, trying his hardest to fix the stereo that was accidentally damaged in the crash earlier. Thinking for a moment, Duke replied, "Well, before I saw the lovebirds, I was with Snowball. We were trying to get home and he tried getting me some food but then the Flushed Pets showed up. And before that I met up with Daisy. Same thing happened."
"Have you seen Rhonda anywhere? I hope she got out of the sewers okay," Pops chimed in. Hearing that, Sweetpea chirped in surprise. Humming thoughtfully, Duke remarked, "Nope, haven't seen her. Or Mel or Buddy or Tiberius actually." Scoffing, Pops replied, "That's probably cuz they were in the sewers with her."
"Ew," Leonard whimpered.
"I see them! I see them!" Norman gasped. He began jumping up and down as he waved to something in the sky. Curious, Sweetpea and the dogs tilted their heads up. Sure enough, there was something flying in the sky. It had to be Tiberius. Marveling the sight, Pops remarked, "Wow, look how gracefully that flight is."
"Actually, I think he's crashing," Duke commented. Sweetpea started trilling like an alarm. Getting the message, everyone dived out of the way as the hawk and his passengers crash landed on the already broken table. Laying on the bottom of the pile, Tiberius rasped, "Someone... please end my suffering..."
"You're home! I missed you so much crazy bird!" Norman squeaked as he bounded over to Tiberius. The guinea pig wrapped his arms around the hawk's face in a warm hug. Climbing down from the top of the pile, Chloe ushered Mel and Buddy off before helping Tiberius up to his feet. Washing her paw, the tabby asked, "Is everyone okay?"
"I'm okay!" Mel yipped, wagging his curly tail. Spinning in a circle as he checked himself over, Buddy reported, "All good over here." Rubbing his sore left wing, Tiberius muttered, "I feel like death." Flicking her ear in annoyance, Chloe fired back, "Maybe if you didn't crash, you would be fine!" It was silent for a moment before she spoke again in a kinder tone, "But I suppose you got us home and off those god awful streets."
"Yes, yes I did-" Tiberius was cut off when Chloe pulled him into a hug. "For what it's worth," the cat murmured, "Thank you." Frozen in place, Tiberius looked over at Norman for help. The guinea pig was giving him a double thumbs up. That was not helpful at all.
Fluttering around the heads of his friends, Sweetpea chirped and tweeted worriedly. Laughing as the parakeet landed on his nose, Buddy stated, "We're okay Sweetpea, really. It was a scary adventure but we're home safe and sound." Hopping in place, Mel woofed, "Yeah cuz we quit the game!"
"Wait," Duke mumbled, his mouth full with food again, "We could quit?!"
