Chapter 1 - The Prologue

No one knew what followed after death.

Would you be judged under the weight of your sins? Did Heaven, Hell, Purgatory and so many other forms of the afterlife actually exist?

No one actually knew the answer to that; all you could do was believe and hope for a better world after passing from this one. Or you could go the nonchalant scientific route. No worries about what would await you after passing; just knowing that you'd have to use this one life to its fullest, to enjoy it for all that it's worth.

After all, no one knew when they'd die, which was both a curse and a blessing.

You certainly didn't think you'd meet your end by rescuing another person, much less a stranger.

It was ironic in a way, you had never taken an interest in acting heroic and courageous before but in that moment, nothing could have stopped you from taking the path you had chosen.

You stood next to a young mother and her baby, sleeping soundly on her chest, waiting for the train home after school. Everyone else noticed the woman with a gun far too late; everyone but you. You saw her, connected the dots and dove in front of the young mother with more speed than you thought you were capable of.

Two bullets lodged into your chest and for a short amount of time, your whole body exploded with agony. Your lungs filled with your own blood as white noise thundered in your ears. Your eyes saw the shooter get apprehended by security before falling shut.

You died only seconds later.

No goodbyes, no happy memories flashing before your eyes. There was no god to greet you and no devil either; just pitch black.

And then you opened your eyes.

"What the hell are you?!" You screamed, e/c eyes probably the size of dinner plates.

Now, to say you were confused would be a heavy understatement. It's not every day that you find an anthropomorphic German Shepherd in a police uniform leaning over you, asking you for your name, species, address or any other form of information. It's not every day, that you look around, only to see a multitude of anthropomorphic animals walking around as if they didn't have a care in the world, wearing clothing, holding phones or talking to one another. It's not every day that you're taken to the government, which also consists of anthropomorphic animals, only to find out you've apparently landed in another world.

A world, in which humans are categorized as a recently evolved, endangered species with only 10 sightings of them around the globe.

"Shit like this could only happen to me," you murmur as you finally get the chance to really breathe again, without a scientist or government official around you. You were in a hotel room, provided by the authorities, after spending the entire day sharing all your knowledge on the homo sapiens with animal scientists. Thankfully, you were able to escape procedures such as the examination of your no-no-square or the Observation of your "mating habits and rituals".

"This is so fucking weird. Why couldn't I just die like a normal person?"

Seeing as you were the only "animal" of your species with known whereabouts, civilized manners and willing to cooperate, you were given the chance to finish your studies at a school named Cherryton Academy . Being only seventeen, full of anxiety, a few ounces of depression, a mess of chaotic energy and existential dread, this seemed like a pretty good deal; if you can ignore the fact, that you would be the only human among dozens of anthropomorphic animals.

You would be arriving there tomorrow but you had to agree to come to regular medical check-ups to "expand our knowledge of humans". You would most likely not run into too much discrimination, seeing as humans were pretty harmless omnivores by nature. The fact that racism was apparently even worse in this world than in your old one was worrying. In your opinion, it is because these are more so animals with human minds, than purely animals with humanoid bodies. You'd bet anything that the acceptance of the LGBTQA+ Community would be just as lacking in this world as their acceptance of carnivores.

Sure, you understood that eating another sentient individual is a crime but bearing your fangs or hell, even acting "suspicious"? The similarities are almost too obvious.

The reality of the situation only now began to fully settle in and tears start to stream their way down your face, leaving behind irritated red skin. Broken Sobs remain stuck in your throat; you couldn't risk any of the guards outside of your door hearing you.

You'll never see your family again. You'll never see your friends again. You don't even know if you'll ever experience love, your first kiss or your first sexual experience. Before dying, you'd never really thought much about that kind of stuff; you were too busy minding your own business, fantasizing about fictional worlds and characters and being too scared to actually talk to people. What if you would never even meet another human? The world is big and humans are down to a very small number. Would at least one of them even be someone you could be romantically interested in?

Standing up from the bed you'd been chilling in for the last few minutes, you move towards the window. Thousands of lights illuminate the night sky, skyscrapers and modern buildings stand tall like giants among the strangeness of this world. The view that presents itself reminds you of home, yet you know it isn't.

"But it can be if I'm willing to try," you recite the familiar words of your old world, "I just have to make the best out of it."

* * *

The very next morning, you're presented with your new school uniform. Dressed in white, the skirt making you slightly uncomfortable, you sat in a car, driven by another anthropomorphic stranger. Trees and buildings flash by your window, melting into a wild array of colours and shapes, birds flying through the sky and literally carrying their belongings.

As the car slows to a smooth stop in front of the gates and the doors open for you to step out, a quiet gasp of awe escapes your lips.

Before you stood one of the biggest boarding schools you had ever seen, shining in beautiful vibrant colours, like it doesn't belong to the rest of this black and white world.

"Well," You sigh, as you take your bags out of the trunk, all of their contents also provided by the authorities, "here goes nothing. I'm sure everything will be fine."

However, as our brave heroine uttered those words, the readers knew that absolutely nothing would be fine.

Hello there! Welcome to my Legoshi x reader story! I am hoping you enjoyed the first chapter and will enjoy the rest of this book as well.

Now, before all of you freak out that the Reader is a human, let me tell you one thing:

It's all part of the plan 0^0

Paru Itagaki herself has confirmed that humans do exist in Beastars, they are just really rare and down to really small numbers. Now, without spoiling anything, I want to explain my reasoning for making the heroine a human in an animal world.

Although I love the idea of having a fluffy tail, I was incredibly curious how a human, one that has experienced our world and is used to being the apex predator, would fare in the world of beastars. I will touch on the human/canine symbiotic relationship and others but I mainly wanted to see a human character that would basically let the two worlds collide. Humans are the apex predator for a reason and I really needed a story that touched on the "darker" side of humans.

So I decided to make it.

Also, I'm obsessed with kimi no na wa and I'm listening to the orchestra version of the soundtrack while writing this so be prepared for some references and gifs because the art is fucking amazing.

I will try my best to use accurate facts but if you see any mistakes, factual or grammar related, please let me know.

I hope you enjoy your quarantine :3

See you in the next chapter!
