Chapter Three
Today was "Adoption Day". I really disliked it. Adoption Day was a day set aside for prospective foster parents came to the orphanage to adopt children. I had been adopted countless times only to be taken back to the orphanage because my foster parents couldn't live with me. My workload increased whenever it was Adoption Day. The place had to be attractive to the parents who would be coming. Everything had to be perfect. We always dressed in our best clothes whenever it was Adoption Day. Mrs. Hughes always told us to be our " natural selves" and not fake anything.
The day passed by uneventfully. Parents came in and left and a few children were adopted. Adoption Day was just about to end when a blue saloon car came through the gates of the orphanage. A young couple stepped out of the car.
Heather Carson hoped she had made it just in time. She couldn't miss this opportunity. She had been to countless number of orphanages, but she still hadn't found a child to adopt. Heather loved children with all her heart. This was why she had chosen to be a teacher. All her hopes of having children were shattered when she found out she couldn't give birth.
"Hello. Mrs. Carson. It's so nice to meet you", Mrs. Hughes said.
"It's nice to meet you too. Am I too late?" Heather asked anxiously.
"No, of course not. Come in. Where's your husband?" Mrs. Hughes asked.
"Oh, he is on his way", Heather said and entered the orphanage.
Heather glanced at all the children ranging from babies to 15 year old teenagers. There were so many choices and she didn't know who to pick.
"Oh, God, please help me. I don't know which child to choose. Guide me to the child you have picked out for me", Heather silently prayed.
Heather took a look at the children again and that's when she saw her. She had long, straight blonde hair which she had tied into a braid. She had big sea blue eyes which anyone could get lost into. She had on an orange tank top and black shorts. On her feet were black sneakers.
"Hello", Heather said to the girl.
The girl looked up at her and ignored her. Heather estimated the girl's age to be sixteen years.
"Hi, I'm Heather and you are?" Heather asked her.
"Courtney", she said.
" OK. Can you tell me a little bit about yourself?" Heather asked.
"My profile is with Mrs. Hughes. Go and ask her for it", Courtney said rudely.
Heather was taken aback by the girl's rude behaviour. However, she felt a strong affection for the girl. She saw behind the rude behaviour years of hurt and pain. This was when she decided to adopt Courtney. She made it her mission to show Courtney love in its true form - unconditional love.
Just then , Aaron came in and Heather told him about her choice. Aaron immediately disapproved of her choice and said Courtney would only bring trouble into the family. Heather ignored him and asked Mrs. Hughes for the adoption papers.
"Mrs. Hughes. I think I've finally made my choice", Heather said.
"OK. Who do you want to adopt?" Mrs. Hughes asked.
"Courtney", Heather said.
"Courtney? But she has--- no one-- she's been kicked out of so many foster homes. Why would you pick her?" Mrs. Hughes asked in utter surprise.
"She's the one I want to adopt."
"Okay. Well, here are the adoption papers", Mrs. Hughes said and reluctantly gave Heather the adoption papers.
