Chapter One: Cash
I'm sitting in my dorm room, playing x box when my phone goes off. In ten minutes, my whole world has crumbled. Cody is my big brother. He's 23, and one of the bravest guys I've ever met. He's in the Army, deployed in the Middle East. He's the reason I'm a Christian. The reason I believe in God and everything He has done for me. When I was 14, he sat me down and asked me what I believed. Having that conversation with him was hard, but I walked away understanding so much more than I had. That Jesus died for me, and no matter what I do, I always can go back to Him. Go Home. Going to church was his and my thing. But he never called it church, he always said he was going home. I asked him about it once. He said that he knew he needed God, and so for him going to church was like going home. But now he's missing in action in who knows where, and I don't even know if he's alive. Of all the people in my life, he's the last person to deserve this. Why, God? He's literally the strongest Christain I know.
I hang up my phone and throw my controller onto my bed, pull a sweatshirt on over my head, and run out my door. Running down a floor, I run to Sarah's room. She's one of my best friends on campus. She's become one of the boys, and I know she'll be in her room. The rest of the guys are out with other people.
"Sarah!!!" I bang on her door.
"Whoa Cash chill bud..." she starts, opening the door until she sees my face. "What's wrong?!" She asks, looking slightly panicked.
"It's Cody. He's Missing In Action."
She freezes, and I know her mind is going a million miles a minute.
"Cash..." she starts, but I lose it. I start crying.
She understands and pulls me into a hug. She knows how close he and I are and knows I'm scared.
"Are you going home?" She asks.
"Yeah, Colton's alone because my parents are in Cali and he shouldn't be alone right now." I say, once I've composed myself.
"Ok I'll pack a bag and be ready in ten minutes." She tells me. "Go pack I'll meet you here." I nod, and turn to head to my room. "Oh, and Cash?" I turn back to look at her, wiping the tears out of my eyes.
"We can't do much, but God sure can." She says. I nod, turn to head to my room, and instantly start praying.
Ten minutes and a suitcase later, we're walking down to my truck. I call my mom back, and let her know what's going on.
"Are you sure? It's a three hour drive, and its already 8 at night Cash. I know your worried but I don't want you to crash."
"I'll be fine Momma, Sarah's with me and she'll drive if I don't feel like I can stay awake that long." I tell her. Sarah has been my friend since freshman year of college. Being Sophomores this year, she's been to my house before (with our bible study retreat- my family hosted because we have the most floor room to sleep on) and knows Colton and Cody. Oh, and my mom loves her.
"Alright bubba, promise you'll text me when your there. Oh, and please make sure Colton locked the back door, he forgets that a lot." She tells me.
"Yes Ma'am."
After hanging up, I pop my truck into drive. It's a 2003 Dodge Cummins. Proud as heck of it, I've put a lot of blood sweat and tears (and money) into this darn thing.
"Last minute roadie, who knew." Sarah says, glancing at the clock.
"Yeah, under not so great circumstances I'm afraid." I sigh. It's gonna be a long three hour drive, especially through corn fields and pasture land. Hauling across Wisconsin isn't that bad, in the daylight. At night deer run rampant, and it can get really scary.
An hour in, and we've listened to every single song I have on iTunes. Which isn't very many. So we've listened to them twice.
"Let me hook my phone up." Sarah begs.
"Ok fine." I pull my phone off the aux and hand it to her.
She plugs it in, and the song that plays is brand new to me. It's called Home, by Tedashii and Crowder. I listen to it once, and tell her to play it again.
"Why?" She asks me.
"Because I'm going to listen to that song until Cody is safely at home again."
A/N song is at top to listen to!
