twenty one
AFTER FOUR SESSIONS, Amina and Luca finally finished the single. After their last meeting when they figured out the idea of what they wanted the song to be about, and her piano note that she showed Luca, the trio had finished the three minute song in only four days.
The single was about wanting someone, but not being able to have them. Luca and Jacob had found it easier to go with Amina's way of getting over their writers block-to create a story rather than trying to make the song relatable. Writing a story with a song was putting herself into a character and trying to think and see everything the way her character would. It was easier to make the excuse of Amina being in a characters head than her own-her lyrics and emotions being excused as an imaginary persons.
Luca sang the first verse and Amina joined in for the bridge, chorus, and second verse. Each line was a new page of a chapter being told.
Two people desperately wanting each other but never being able to have them. A depressed man believing he didn't deserve anyone, and a closed of woman who didn't try to get to know anyone. The song followed them and the stage of wanting to be in love with each other, but the odds pointed against them. Amina knew the idea was too close to home, but the best music was. Her way of letting out her mention was through music, and she wanted to let her fear of not getting to be with the person she wanted the most to be let go of.
They worked endlessly throughout the night to make it the way they wanted it. It was much different from Luca's regular music, but she saw how alive he looked while writing it. While Amina and Jacob were exhausted at two am, Luca was writing new lyrics and waking them with excitement like a child on Christmas if we a new, better verse. For the first time in years Luca Jackson was proud of what he was putting out into Hollywood.
Amina sat beside Luca on the large couch with his head laying on her shoulder and hand enveloped in hers. Mavis, polo, Marcus and Jacob sat on the other side of the studio. Jacob and the two music producers polished the single as Mavis stuck to her phone.
Jacob turned around from the computer and to Amina and Jacob. "My dads coming today to hear it." he informed nervously.
Amina's heart raced rapidly. "I thought we sent him samples of our progress?"
Throughout the past four days, Amina and Jacob has sent videos of her and Luca's progress with the song. If they made any little change they made sure to send him a video-whatever they did, it was automatically sent to Brandy. Luca hated it and thought it was stupid because he said Brandy was an ignorant asshole who didn't care about progress until it came to the final product.
"He doesn't believe in listening to work in progress." Jacob muttered annoyed.
Amina's eyebrows furrowed as she felt Luca chuckle beside her. "Right."
"I think we did good though, amazing even." Jacob states proudly, a radiant smile on his lips. "This song is by far the most..." he trailed off breathlessly.
"Real," Amina said for him.
"Exactly," he laughed. "Definitely Luca's and mine best song yet."
She smiled accomplished as she played with Luca's long hair locks. "Glad you think so."
"Although let's hope it's what my dad wanted," Jacob admitted with a small frown. He winced slightly as he rubbed the back of his neck. "Definitely isn't anything like Luca's old music beside his first album. And this won't be played in much clubs either."
"But it can be the song right bring in a new era into Hollywood." Amina teased as Luca squeezed her hand.
He was tired, and his body proved it. He got rarely any sleep throughout the past four days, but it wasn't like his body wasn't letting him. Luca had told her that he was over excited about the process of finally writing his own song that sleep wasn't important when it came to it.
Jacob smiled after both Amina and Luca before he turned back around to Polo and Marcus.
"Do you think he'll like it?" Amina whispered to Luca, tugging on the hair strand she hand wrapped around her finger softly.
"He'll have to," Luca muttered, digging his face into Amina's neck as he inhaled softly. "We don't have time to write a half assed single and don't have time to buy one and then produce it either." He opened his eyes as he looked up at Amina with a reassuring smile. "We'll be fine, Amina."
She ran her finger back and forth across his neck and hair as an answer. Ever since he admitted to liking Amina, her a rite attitude changed around him. She wasn't hiding her attraction to him, and he wasn't either. Mavis noticed, Jacob noticed, everyone noticed-but no one said anything.
"You two are absolutely amazing!" Brandy exclaimed as he walked through the open door and into the room with a large smile.
Amina automatically perked with a smile. "Your heard it?"
Luca sighed, picking his head up as he adjusted himself on the couch, sitting straight and his attention on Brandy.
"What no," Brandy said in disbelief. "I'm talking about the paparazzi!"
"Oh."
Amina and Luca were still all over twitter and new outlets. Pictured of them holding hands, her feeing him her hotdog, or them walking with her holding his arms floated around the Internet with one question-was Luca Jackson dating Amina Ryan? People all over twitter knew it was a publicity stunt, but they also hoped that their actions were done for the cameras. Luckily for them, the cameras were long forgetter about when it was just them.
"You two sure know how to get attention. You're both tending on twitter and on every media website and channel. You're the talk of town!" Brandy excitedly exclaimed, causing Amina to laugh and Luca to frown.
Jacob stepped from behind Brandy with a proud smile. "Are you ready to listen pa?"
Brandy's smile doesn't waver as he clapped his hands excitedly. "Hell yes! Lets hear it."
He turned around to sit on the empty chair beside Polo. As Jacob connected his laptop to the speakers, Amina grabbed Luca's hand as she squeezed it nervously.
The song played, the soft piano and bass in the background as Luca's deep voice played throughout the speakers angelically. His voice was raw and real, no auto tune needed to hide his vocals like his other songs. He wasn't screaming or his voice went drowned out by the overly loud back ground music. His voice was loud and clear, and beautiful as ever. Her part came on, her vocal matching Luca's ending as they both sang the chorus harmonically. The background music was light and soft, not loud enough to draw the listeners attention away from their voices or lyrics. Then the ending, the hardest part to sing without tearing up. The sad ending of wanting someone everyone doesn't want you with-wanting a happy needing with someone while everyone is sabotaging them for a sad ending.
As soon as the song needed, Brandy let out a long sigh. "I don't like it."
Her heart dropped as Luca cursed lowly beside her. "What?" she whispered.
It was perfect, it was amazing-it was refreshing outside the music industry's stereotypical love songs. It was raw and real, something people were beginning to appreciate in that time and age.
"I don't like it." He stayed again with no remorse. "It's not Luca's style. Not anyone's beside depressed people." He looked between Jacob and Luca with disappointment.
"You could've done better."
Luca groaned frustratedly as he leaned into his knees and rubbed his face. "You wanted a mediocre song, Brandy."
"Excuse me?" he raised his eyebrows up challengingly.
"You don't care about the music, you care about the money you'll make from it. You want a shitty pop song that you know people will listen to because it's just like every other one on the radio." Luca stated annoyed as he stood up front his seat angrily.
"Watch it, Luca." Brandy warned with a hard glare as he stood up as well.
Luca just laughed bitterly as he looks at brandy with raised eyebrows. He was testing him, and it was working. "What artists have you heard made a song like this?"
"None," Jacob answered for Brandy, who remained quiet.
"Exactly, it'd new, refreshing." Luca stated, a desperate smile on his lips.
"And it's real," Amina added as all men's eyed turn to her. "It's not cheaply made with no heart. The lyrics tell a story rather than just repeat themselves."
Luca gave her a smile before looking back at Brandy. "It's better than any song I've written because for the first time I have a song that has meaning."
Brandy face grew red. "No one cares for meaning Luca! They care for upbeat songs that can let them-"
"But they will now," Amina cut in. Standing up from her seat, she stood beside Luca confidently. They worked too hard for this song to not make it to mainstream-Luca was too excited and proud of this song for it to not be heard. "After Luca's breakdown his fans aren't going to want songs with no meaning, they want his truth and his emotions." She gave Brandy a bored look, "not club bangers."
Jacob punched the air frustratedly behind Brandy before calming himself down as standing in front of him. "Let's go with it, Pa."
Brandy looked at Jacob with a perplexed, almost disbelieved look. "What?"
Did Brandy always expect Jacob to agree with him on everything? Amina knew Jacob did everything he could to get his father to be proud of him, and this song proved it. He wanted so hard to show Brandy that he was as good of a singer writer and decision maker as he was a singer. Jacob was proud of this song just like Amina and Luca, and she knew he wasn't going to give up on it-even if his father argued otherwise.
"This song could open a door for Luca's new style." Jacob explained, stepping back and beside Luca with a small smile.
"But this isn't a new style." Brandy argued.
What was so wrong with Luca stepping out of the pop genre? He's been stuck in it for almost eleven years, he's made enough albums and sings that sounded the same after so many years. Luca was a new man, and with being a new man he wanted to write things outside of pop. He had a different view now, she could tell from the way he was writing. It wasn't rushed and half asses, it was poetic and storyline, something the old Luca Jackson never sounded like.
"To me it is?" Luca argued back, stepping forward to Brandy. "It goes with all the music I've written in.... rehab," he cleared his throat. "This could open a whole new door for music."
Brandy chuckled bitterly, shaking his head as he puckering his lips. "This single isn't going to beat anything. It's not going to go anywhere."
"Brandy-" Polo went to say something, but got cut off by a growing angry Brandy.
"Do you see this on radios?" he asked lividly at the trio. "Do you think you'll hear this club outside anywhere but a fucking mental hospital or a sad youtube edit?"
Luca groaned as he turned around and began to take deep breathes. Amina looked at Jacob who looked just as pissed off as Luca. Both men were behind upset at Brandy's words, and she wasn't sure if it was because what he was saying could be true, or because the song they've worked so hard on wasn't going to be heard.
What could one bad song do to Luca? Sure, it was his debut single since his breakdown, but if the fans didn't live it they'd either pretend to and still support, or they'll wait till his next release and forget all about the shitty first single. It would ruin his already damage reputation. It wouldn't hurt his followers or money input since his fans will support him with any song he released.
"Brandy, you mange Hollywood top artists," Amina started with a curious tone.
"Some," Mavis injected.
Amina rolled her eyed, but continued. "This single will pave a way for Luca and show his fans that he's here and not leaving."
"He could do that with any other song."
"So what's the problem with this one then?" she remarked with a cocked eyebrow. "What can this single possible do to hurt his career or streaming? Because let's be honest here people are going to listen to this, because it's Luca fucking Jackson for crying out loud."
Luca appeared beside her again with a proud smile on his face. "She's right."
Brandy opened and closed his fist as he clenched his jaw. Growing, he threw his arms up exaggeratedly. "It's not like we can fucking make a new one anyways."
Amina shared a look with the boys. "Why?"
She knew Luca and Jacob weren't going to give up on the single, and now it proved that their fight worked-but not because of them.
"I scheduled with Beverly next week for the single." Brandy groaned into his hand as he pinch the bridge of his nose.
"Fuck," she muttered.
After her last interview with Beverly, Amina was sure she wasn't ever going to step back in that stage. She was told she'd never be on there, and now she was back, but with Luca Jackson beside her.
"God what did you do? Now we're gonna have to look into buying on off of one of Nates songs." Brandy groaned in frustration.
Amina sighed, rubbing her face tiredly. He wasn't going to listen to then-he wasn't even going to give the single another listen. It was something out of what he was used to, so therefore he didn't like it. He didn't want anything but stereotypical pop songs about sex and love. Brandy wasn't use to his artists wanting to branch out with their music, and he wasn't going to.
Polo and Marcus stood up from their chair simultaneously. "We're not changing it."
The trio look at them perplexed as Brandy turned around to give them a cocky eyebrow. "What?"
Polo shared a look with Marcus. "It's either they keep the song the way it is, or we won't work on the next one with them." he threatened.
Brandy let out a disbeliever chuckle. "You can't do it."
"I will if you don't bother to let the damn kid do what he wants with his music for the first time."
Brandy bitterly chucked, throwing his hands up in surrender. He turned to Luca sternly. "You want this single out?" he stepped closer to Luca as Luca quickly did the same, the two men two feet apart. "Even if it fails and makes you look like a fool? Because trust me, it will."
Luca chuckled, as he smiled at brandy amused. "Can't make me look any bigger than I already am."
Marcus stepped up beside brandy. "It's a good song." He reassured.
"But is it good enough to even top on the billboard?"
Was that all he worried about? Billboard rankings? Was that all anyone was worried about it when it came to Luca? Sure, she could understand if Brandy was worried about it with her considering she was a new artist, but it was Luca Jackson. The man who always made top charting billboard songs and had the most dedicated fan base there was. Sure, this was the first song after his breakdown, but he wasn't worried about that, he was worried about the ranking and it not being a pop song.
He didn't care if Luca was ready to perform again. He didn't care that Luca was proud for the first time in himself and his music. He didn't care about anything that made Luca happy s and that ruined Amina, knowing she was signed into a man who didn't bother to listen to his arts and their wishes.
"Luca's the biggest pop-star around," Jacob said, hesitatingly patting Luca's shoulder. "His worst songs made it to top ten on the billboard for three weeks." Jacob shared a smile with Luca before quickly shaking his head and turning to his dad with a frown. "This one will do just fine."
Brandy exhaled through his nose sharply. He placed his hands on his hips as he stared at the three of them sternly. "Send me the finished version." He ordered before turning around and leaving the room.
Amina smiled as Luca quickly brought her in for a quick hug. "You did it," he whispered into her hair.
Letting her go and turning to Jacob, Amina shared as the two shared a silent conversation before they both nodded. Jacob looked over Luca's shoulder. "Good job," he said to Amina amused. "You just wrote a song together that'll make history"
"What can we say," Luca muttered as he brought her to his side. He looked down at Amina with a playful smile and wink. "Everything's easier with her."
Jacob chuckled, nodding his head in agreement. "I can tell."
"Let's hang out at my place? I'll make pizza and we can just chill?" Luca offered before Jacob could leave.
Amina frowned, knowing Luca was trying to spend time with his old best friend. It was sad knowing they weren't close anymore, and for a reason unknown beside Bella being the main cause of it.
Jacob sighed. "I'm good."
Luca groaned, nodding his head as they watched Jacob leave without a second word. Their peaceful bubble was done for-their act of acting nice and getting along was gone because the single was done.
Amina brought her hand underneath Luca's chin as she turned his attention to her. "I'd love some pizza."
And then, his frown was replaced with a smile.
