Laura and Carmilla are seniors at Silas high. Laura is the school journalism nerd, Carmilla is the school rebel who loves the occasional read. While the two are chilling in the school library, Carmilla spots Laura and decides she really wants to get her attention, but doesn't know how to approach her.
Carmilla strides into the school library one Monday morning, a backpack with a plethora of books sits on her back. Her eyes scans the room as she walks, searching to see if anyone had taken her spot.
No one did.
She smirks to herself as she sees that and rapidly moves to make her way to the small corner of the room where a couple small chairs and a table sat. She sat herself onto one of the seats and adjusted her positioning until she felt comfortable, her back slightly reclined while her feet were perched up on the small table students sometimes use to place their coffee cups on.
She puts her backpack on the floor- the librarians have given up on arguing with her to leave it outside- and takes a book out of one of the pockets. A first edition philosophy book is the lucky selection that day and she once again relaxes into her usual position and begins reading.
Not long after she begins reading, a small blonde girl comes bouncing into the library and quickly makes her way into the non-fiction section. She walks back out of it with a history of Silas book and makes her way to the area across the way from where Carmilla is sitting.
Carmilla lowers her book so that she can look over the top of it at the girl that came in. Nobody ever really comes to the library during class time other than her and a couple of other people, but this girl looks to be doing some sort of research for class.
Carmilla's eyebrows raise slightly and her eyes become a little brighter upon seeing the girl. 'She's gorgeous....and cute..' She thinks as she takes in the blonde's appearance. Small, yet confident stature, brunette at the roots while the rest is dyed blonde, brown concentrated eyes, adorable fashion sense. Carmilla was taken by her. She wanted to go up and talk to her...then she thought about it a little.
Sure, Carmilla may cause trouble in class but talking to others hasn't really ever been her thing. She gets nervous, her breathing feels shorter, she suddenly feels shy and like the world is closing in on her at the thought of even talking to anyone one-on-one who isn't family. She's not used to being able to confidently talk, nobody has really ever been very interested in what she had to say. And those that were left as soon as they found out what type of life she lives at home.
But...Carmilla really wants to talk to the blonde. Carmilla feels a compelling need or pull to talk to the blonde. But her mind won't let her. Her anxiety is too consuming, she can't just walk up to her and talk, it was terrifying for her. She sinks into her seat in defeat, crushed that her stupid anxiety is keeping her from talking to a cute girl. Her head falls to her backpack on the floor, and her face lights up with an idea. 'I'll just get her to come to me!'
She tears through her backpack, trying to find something other than one of her first editions to toss at the blonde. Her hand finds her maths workbook and a small smile appears on her face as she quietly tears out a page and rolls it into a ball.
Carmilla has her book in one hand and a paper ball in the other she brings the book to hover next to her face and lines up her shot. She throws it...
And she misses.
The blonde's head shoots up at the sight of the paper ball flying past her head and her eyes dart around, but it seems no one around was responsible.
Carmilla holds the book in front of her face. "Fuck fuck fuck, shit." She mummers under her breath, her aim was usually great but the one time she actually wants it to be good it becomes completely crap! She sighs and lightly hits the book against her forehead a few of times. 'There's always tomorrow I guess....'

Laura finds herself going to the library the next day, the same jump in her step as there usually is. She got a lot of work done for her journalism in it the day before, more than she usually gets done in class, so she's come back so she could read one of the books she was required to study for her English lit class. The second Jungle Book by Rudyard Kipling.
It took her a while, but she found it eventually.
She went to go sit in the spot she did the day before, but remembered the paper ball that almost hit her in the head and decided against it, instead she sat in a more central part of the library.
In the corner of her eye she could see one of the people that was at the library yesterday. Carmilla Karnstein. A girl in her year level with raven hair, badass clothes and an I-don't-give-a-fuck-attitude about her. Laura knows her as the rebel that most people in her grade talk about. The one who never does work and never answers questions in class, and that's if she even bothers to show up to them. The one who is apparently too rude to talk to anyone who would try talking to her.
Laura tries not to listen, but it's hard when she's the most talked about girl in school.
Laura puts those thought behind her and starts to read her English lit task.
10 minutes later Laura can see Carmilla's arm quickly rise and fall, she feels something hit her near the top of her forehead almost, right where a person's hair would start, immediately afterwards. Laura looks up and sees Carmilla quickly hold her book up to her face. Laura raises her eyebrows. 'Why would she throw paper balls at me...?' She thinks as she lowers her head once again to read. 'She must be the one who did it yesterday...but...why?'
---------------------------
Carmilla is back in the library Wednesday that same week, in the exact same spot she always is with another philosophy book in hand. Every now and then she would look up from her book to see if the blonde was walking in, but such a event never occurred. Each time she looked and didn't see her she would sigh in disappointment and continue reading, waiting for the small blonde to walk through the door.
That time didn't come until lunchtime.
The blonde came in with two red heads. Carmilla huffed at the company and continued to read her book in silence.
To Carmilla's absolute joy a little while after they came in, the two red heads left. Leaving the blonde, who quickly went to go pick up a book from the fiction section and sat back in her seat.
Carmilla grinned and pulled out another page from her maths book to roll into a ball. 'Third time's a charm!'
She lines up her shot and throws it at the blonde.
Only for it to miss for a second time.
blonde notices this again and Carmilla is quicker to move the book to her face this time. "Fucking, again? Fuck, fuck, shit, fuck, frilly hell, why?!" She mutters as she hits her forehead with the book again.
She finds the courage to sneak a peak at the blonde and finds that she is looking at her with a frustrated and vaugley questioning look. Her gaze shifts back to the book in front of her as her heart picks up a few beats from the nerves of the girl potentially coming over just to blow up at her. Throwing things probably wasn't a good idea, but she couldn't think of anything else to do. It's not like it would be any less embarrassing if she stood up, only to sit back own because she's too anxiety ridden to talk to anyone let alone this girl she actually wants to talk to, only to repeat that process no less than 7 times and then attempt to actually go up and talk to her, only to trip over every chair along the way and then stammer over her words when she finally gets to the blonde. Yes. Such a great idea.
In the end, the blonde never came over, which caused Carmilla to sigh in disappointment as she put her book in her bag and left the library. 'If she's here tomorrow, that'll be the last time."
---------------------------
Laura cautiously walks into the library the next day and sits right at the other end of the room from Carmilla. Laura hoped she couldn't throw that far.
She didn't get it. The two had never spoken before, and on top of that Laura never did anything to her that would provoke her to throw things at her.
She grabs the history of Silas book she borrowed a couple days back and begins to read it while she sticks some earphones in to listen to some songs on one of her Spotify playlists.
To her surprise, once again she sees another paper ball soar past her head. She looks up to Carmilla from across the room and eyes her angrily. 'What in the name of Hogwarts is her problem?!'
Laura slams her book closed and tears her earphones out, stomping her way over to where Carmilla was sitting like a child would when having a tantrum.
When she gets closer to Carmilla she can faintly hear the girl muttering, "Fucking fuck. Can you do fucking nothing right, for the love of fuck, can you not fucking throw straight? Usually you fucking can, why is it when you actually want to fucking use your good aim for something you have to get fucking shit at. Fuck!," under her breath, hitting her forehead every time she uses a curse word.
Laura clears her throat and waits until Carmilla is looking at her to start speaking. "What the frilly hell is your problem Karnstien?! I have done nothing to you, why do you suddenly feel the need to throw things at my head like a raging b-- bad person!" Laura stammers a bit as she stops herself from calling Carmilla a bitch.
Carmilla cowers under the blonde's fiery gaze and almost whimpers at the aggressive tone being thrown her way. She's not used to talking to people, and the only person who ever yells at her is her mother which usually leads to getting punished for something she did.
Carmilla feels her body start to shake and her chest feels as if it's getting crushed. She starts to sweat and her breathing is laboured as tears begin to build up in her eyes. "I-I'm s-s-s-sssorry, I-it's just that I...don't really talk to people much. I don't really kn-know how to approach people, it's t-too scary. I used to be able to b-but...everyone left me. I'm too scared to approach people to talk, I'm sorry, but I just really wanted to talk to you because you are really really cute and gorgeous and you seem nice and stuff so. I'm sorry, I just thought that throwing stuff at you might be the best way to get your attention." Carmilla shrugs and stutters as silent tears roll down her eyes.
Laura's resolve softens pretty quickly. She learnt this in one of her psych classes the year before. From the looks of it Carmilla has pretty serious social anxiety. She suddenly feels really terrible for yelling at her. Plus, Laura found it kinda cute how much Carmilla wanted to talk to her.
"Carmilla...I am so sorry for yelling at you, I had no idea. Because we've never talked, allow me to introduce myself. I'm Laura Hollis, my main focus is media and journalism, and I am honoured that you would try so hard to talk to me...wait, I'll be right back!" Laura quickly scurries off to the table she was sitting at and grabs her belongings. She hurries back to the spot where Carmilla was and sits in the seat next to her.
"Now, Carmilla. Tell me more about yourself, considering most of the things that I've heard about you being a complete bitch has been a total lie." Laura grins.
Carmilla grins back. 'It worked!!'
-----------------------------
The two end up talking until the end of the school day and exchange numbers.
They also promise to talk everyday, without Carmilla feeling the need to throw stuff at her to get her attention.
