Part 15
" You what!!!" Harlem screeched when I finally told her the entire story of what had happened in the Solo evaluations. At first when I explained the entirety of my actions it had just gone completely silent. Daisy even dropped her spoon in her pumpkin soup of of surprise which landed its an abrupt slosh. An attempted to kill a gamemaker had never been done in a solo evaluation.
" How on Earth could have made such an idiotic decision?!" Harlem exclaimed and then continued to lecture me further in a shrill tone. All of her manner and dinner table etiquette had flown out the window. She said things like 'Bad example' and 'My action reflected badly on all of them'. I'm pretty sure she was just worried about her social standards and how I might have just messed them up.
" Honestly! Bronx, what do you have to say about all this?!" Harlem asked as her wig went a little slightly off from her commotion and she quickly reset it. I turned to Bronx who had stayed strangely quiet during in the whole matter. He looked up at her and then to me with almost blank eyes. I rose a brow and looked to Haymitch who sat next to him who shrugged.
Suddenly Bronx just started chuckling and then progressed in to fill out laughter as if someone had just told him a really funny joke. It was such a strange response that I involuntarily cracked a smile myself. Daisy started nervously laughing trying to play along with Bronx's strange outburst. Even Haymitch let a little confused smirk out as he looked at Bronx like he was mad.
Harlem's left eye twitched just the slightest as her ears went red. " T-this is no laughing matter!" Harlem exclaimed justly. Bronx just laughed harder at her reaction and once he calmed himself back down he took a drink of the strange blue tea that we had all been served. It tasted strangely of artificial raspberries.
" Did you really.... throw a knife at ...Venice?" Bronx asked through his laughter with a smile and I nodded. I still had the awkward grin on my face. At least he wasn't losing his head like Harlem was. Well I guess he was in a sense losing it just in a better way. "A-a-and then you said 'Thank you for - your consideration" I finished continuing to grin causing Bronx to chuckle even more.
" Well at least you'll get points for dash" he said through chuckling. Harlem's jaw strained " You may think this is funny but are you going to be laughing when they decided to take it out- on who?" Bronx cut off.
" Take it out on who? On her? On them?" Bronx asked gesturing to Haymitch, Daisy, and Bane. " The capitol has already done that by bringing them here so loosen your wig a little bit" Bronx explained. I thought now a little worriedly now since maybe they would decide to do something to my family. No, they couldn't and wouldn't because I planned on winning.
" Well I'll guess we will see who's laughing when they present the scores tonight" Harlem said back giving me a small glare. I wondered if there had ever been someone who been given the score of a zero. I mean there is a first time for everything right?
My answer would only come in time which seemed to drag on for ever. The second and minutes just lazily passing through the air like it was nobodies business. I was just hardly able to listen to the conversations about the other tributes evaluations. Apparently Daisy had tried to show off her abilities in making a fire which I had to admit was kind of lame. Bane discussed over how he had see his climbing skills. There had been a rock course in the training room and he claimed he cleared it rather well. I could believe him when he said that too, Bane was small and kind of weak but he was quick footed and agile.
Haymitch of course decided to use his spear throwing talented. He explained briefly over how he impaled several dummies with spears and even attempted brashly at through a trident which he said he sort of liked. At least he didn't decide to throw it at the gamemakers like I did. Haymitch kept his description short as he didn't seem to enjoy the attention all that much.
As the evening went on we all settled on the long white couches that were dotted with soft red pillows. They were perfectly soft and I so wished I could have taken them back to District 12. They were even more comfortable than my scratchy bed at home. Harlem sat entirely on the other side of the couches as she was still steaming over my evaluations. Her ears were still bright red but she had regained her composure and sat next to Daisy and her stylist. I decided to sit next to Bronx and Haymitch sat beside him. Haymitch looked a little anxious as well. He tapped his finger nervously on the couch but remained resolute. I admired his ability to stay calm. I was fidgeting like mad and my mouth continued to get dry no matter how much water I consumed.
I nervously ran my hand through my soft dirty blond hair anxiously as the grinning face of Caesar Flickerman appeared on screen. This year his hair was canary yellow with his twinkling midnight blue suit. His teeth her an unnatural shade of pure white and his eyebrows were practically bleached.
As always he started with District One and worked his way up the scale from there. As expected almost all of the careers got 8,9, or 10 scores. Michelle, Braxus, Crowe, and Royce each got a ten. I was a little surprised by Royce's score. He was one of the smaller careers standing at maybe only 5'11. He must have done something pretty impressive.
The rest of the districts got scores that average at around a 6 or 7. A few were even given the unfortunate low scores like a 3 and 4. I figured I might even be something below that.
The two that stuck out from that was a male from district seven who got a 9 and the hulk from district 11 named Marquis who scored and admirable 10. It wasn't hard to believe, that guys muscles were the size of bowling balls and he was larger than any of the carreers. He could most likely rip most people in half. Myself included. If I had money I would certainly bet on him.
Soon enough it dwindled down to District 12 as our entire room went dead silent in anticipation. My eyes were dead set up on the screen of the television that was almsot mesmerizing. No one moved so much as a finger as Ceaser looked down at his sheet a paper and delicately spoke. " Bane Decree with a score of a 7" Ceaser announced. The room imiedtly erupted in congratulations and smiles all around. I patted Bane on the back as he looked rather pleased with himself. A 7 was pretty good for District 12.
He settled back down as we waited for the next score. " Haymitch Abernathy with a score of a 9" Ceaser continued and this really brought the house down. A 9 was almsot unheard of for someone from Distict 12 the highest I had personally ever seen was an 8 given to a girl nearly 5 years ago. Haymitch modestly sat with a pleasant smile on his face. His stylist, Mauricio, was almost in tears from how prowd he was. His bright orange eyeliner was beginning to even smear.
Our celebration almsot drowned out Daisy's score witch was just a 6. She smiled brightly thankfully, not at all dowed by the very average score and of course she received many congratulations.
But once more the room went as quiet as night as Ceaser prepared to say the last and final score that would be mine. I felt my heart racing and was sure it would pop out of my chest. I held my breath as Ceaser opened his mouth. His to white of teeth didn't even bother me now.
" Laslty, Ferris Maguire with a score of..... 11!" Ceaser annocuned vibrantly surprised. I litrally shot up into the air in joy. I could hardly believe that I got and 11. The Gamemakers must have liked my feistiness or something because 11s were rare and reserved for the very best careers normally. I started hugging random people in joy like Bronx and Diasy and even a gushing Harlem who looked over filled with joy. I then found myself embraced by Haymitch whose strong arms wrapped around me tightly. He smelt like the Evegreens that grew in District 12. It remeinded me of home.
We broke apart a little awawkardly, my face was a brilliant shade of pink from blushing but also exitment. His cheeks were even tinged a low shade of pink. The awkwardness however did not prevail as Utica came and engulfed me in a grand hug nearly squeezing the air out of me. " I can't believe it! My own tribute getting an 11! Congratulations!" Utica exclaimed proudly. Syracuse gave me a similar speil and hugged me. Bane and his stylist also congratulated me as the evening turned over into a happy setting.
I was still trying to take it all in.
I, Ferris Maguire of Distirct 12 had gotten an 11.
