Chapter 3:
"So uh..What's your name?" I ask the Captain to ease the tension. Obviously it doesn't work because he ignores me. We continue walking down the long white hall. The chatter from the classroom grows faint. The walk seems like forever. That is until we reach the elevator. There's a card needed. Facing me the captain digs into his pockets looking for the card. As he's rummaging in his pocket I catch a glance at his badge. Captain Wincy. His grey eyes catch mine studying me. Clearing his throat he swipes the card and gestures for me to enter the elevator. I step in. That's the first mistake though because he doesn't. The elevator shuts.
"Oh crap."
I search the room around for any signs of a fire alert call for help. There's nothing except a key hole where the buttons should be. What do they want me to find? Ah a key. But the elevator is completely white and empty. Before I can take another step a loud creak comes surging the elevator to the left. Pushing me to the floor.
Snap
I scramble up as the elevator begins to race down. I look around searching for a key. "There's nothing!" Groaning in frustration I sit down on the floor. Accepting my death. That is until I see a glint of metal between the wall and the floor.
Snap
There goes another wire. My time is limited. I jerk to the corner and press my palms against the crack. Too small. I search my clothing seeing if I have something to reach. Finally, I find my hair pin. Pressing it under I manage to get the key.
The cries of metal on metal grow louder. The elevator must be getting close to the lower levels. Jamming the key into the key hole the elevator jerks to a stop. Adrenaline pumps into my body as the doors open. To a long dark room.
"Hello? Anyone there." The sound of my voice piercers the silence.
Snap
The elevator is now gone. Hitting the ground with such an impact that it shakes the floor. Then do I realize why the room is so quiet. Spread across the room are rows and rows of bodies. They must be testing our mental strength.
I feel vomit threaten to come up. Pushing it down I walk towards the light illuminating the room. The stench of death is overwhelming. Don't look at them, don't look. Too late. Glancing down I scream. The face of my mother is drawn on each body. With a jumpsuit saying Northerner.
This isn't real..This is not real! Keep it together Charity!
I huff and push on to the door. Damn it...Another lock. This is sick. I know where they expect me to find the key.
"Common..it's not her. It's not her." I search the bodies looking for one that stands out. Then, I see it. Me...
This must be a joke.
My deceased body is buried under two other bodies of my mother. The words South engraved on my arms and legs. I turn my head away as I search the clothes. Grabbing the key I race towards the door.
Smack
A hand grabs my ankle pulling me down. Croaking begins to grow. Kicking fiercely I struggle with the arms reaching towards me.
"Get off!"
I kick the teaching arms and plunge the key in. Stumbling into a white room. A table with 1 gun,1 knives, and rope. This must be a choice. I don't see how the gun will help. It's limited bullets. The rope well...it's not very good defense either. The knife however will be harder to maintain. It's worth the risk though. The floor is pulled out beneath me as I fall. I grib the handle of the knife. Pointing the blade away from me. Pain spreads across my legs as I'm met with water. Thank gosh it's deep. Pushing my self I swim around searching for dry ground. Howls fill the air. Shit.....
Pulling myself out I watch as 2 pair of dark eyes near me. Why are there wolves in here! Hah...Nope.. I throw myself back into the water. There has to be a way out. I push myself to the wall searching for a door. I hear the wolves plunging in the water. Depending on the distance I don't have much time. I swim to the other side hoping to tire them, but at the same time tiring myself. One of the growls grows frantic as the currents below pull the wolf in. Wait...Currents? Those are new. I struggle against the currents. The other wolf on my tail. The temperature for the water begins to drop. Their definitely has to be someone controlling this. I heave myself onto the shore and wait. The wolf lunges at my. Jaws snapping. Grabbing ahold of my forearm. I drive my blade into the neck of the wolf. Still biting on my forearm. Clenching my jaw I hold back my scream. The pain is unbearably, but I'll have to get throw it. The weight of the limp body lays on me. Whimpering. I use he rest of my strength to push it off.
It's dead. I have to get up.
But I don't want to so I continue to lay there. Blood oozing out of my arm. A howl interrupts my relaxation.
Great just great. I guess it's time to go.
I grip my shirt and tear a piece off. Wrapping it around the wound. Better not have rabies dog. Sprinting towards the end of the room disguised as a forest and I'm met with nothing but just a wall. Just a fucking wall. You have to be kidding me. Wait.... I look up and see a platform with a door. Seriously how do they expect me to get up there?! The growls of the second wolf threatens the time I have left. I search the room. Ah hah! The trees. I pull myself onto one just as the thundering of paws hitting the ground near me. The jaws snapping towards my ankle. Pulling my feet up I lean onto the branch for comfort. I flinch in pain as I heave myself onto the next one. Blood continuing to overflow the makeshift bandage. Great it's still high up but it's in reach.. I lean towards the platform. Loosing my balance and falling. Frantically I grip the branch before I could fall any further. I have to jump.
I can't...
I shut my eyes and ignore the growls of the wolf below. I have to do this. I have to finish this. Then I jump. Using the tree as extra momentum. The air flushes my face. The floor is clear now. The platform hits my stomach knocking the breath from me.Pain burns my forearm. My legs dangle in the air. Using my arms I push myself further into the platform. This hurts so much. Flinching in pain I slip. Falling further off. I can't use my arm. I swing my leg onto the platform. Once I'm on I breathe heavily against the wall. I need a moment before opening the door. Struggling up my calves burn. I turn the knob and collaspe into the white classroom.
Captain Wincy's eyes meet mine. Intrigued with astonishment. Intrigued with disgust.
"Get up." His voice cuts in.
I do as he says. Careful to contain myself from bursting into tears because I made it. I made the 2nd test. I fix my posture holding back each sign of pain. The pain of the wound.
"You have completed the second Test. You may move on to the Infirmary for any wounds. Then, you must head down to the dining area. That is where you will be given a number. That number will contain the group you will be sharing the sleeping chambers with. Once you are given that number you will eat dinner and head back down to the sleeping chambers. Now,don't get so comfortable in there because you will be called down to the third test. You will be given 4 hours of rest. Use those. You will need them."
His eyes burn into mine as he finishes. Guiding me to the hall he barks orders to the men in lab coats behind him. All studying me,whispering to each other.
"Take her to the infirmary."
I'm pushed down the hall and up a flight of stair. It's then that I collapse. I'm met with darkness. Darkness and the thought if I will make it in the next Test.
