Happy Birthday, Nico! ~2017

Third Person PoV

Will woke up with the sunrise as usual. He had a feeling today was important, but he couldn't figure out what it was. He sat in bed while thinking about it for a few minutes. Then he remembered a conversation Nico and he had a year ago to this day.

"Why didn't you tell me it was your birthday, Death Boy?!" Will had exclaimed.

"My birthday isn't that important, Sunshine," Nico had said with a laugh.

"It is important, Neeks! Well since it's now almost midnight, we can't do anything to celebrate it!"

"Will, being one year older is not something worth celebrating over," Nico sighed.

"It is to me if it's you being one year older," Will huffed in exasperation.

Nico laughed at his reaction. "I love you, Sunshine."

"I love you too, Death Boy."

Will jumped out of bed in excitement. He had bugged Nico for years to tell him when his birthday was, and he let it slip last year. They had been dating for five years now, and Will was planning on hopefully making Nico's twentieth birthday the best birthday of his life. Then again, it could turn into the worst birthday of his life, but Will didn't want to think negatively. He'd been waiting for years for this moment to show Nico exactly how much he lived him.

He was going to propose today.

He ran to his dresser and pulled open the sock drawer. He checked to make sure the ring was still there. He had Leo specially design it with a black and gold band. The decoration on the top was half of a golden sun merged with half of a silvery black moon. It was made of Stygian Iron and Imperial Gold. There were also specks of Celestial Bronze dotting around the ring to make it sparkle a little. He hoped Nico liked it.

He ran out of the cabin after hiding the ring again. Will ran up to the Zeus cabin and knocked. "Sparky, get the door!" Piper groaned.

There was some shuffling and Jason opened the door, rubbing his eyes tiredly. "Will? What are you doing here? It's early!"

"What is Piper doing here?" Will asked.

"Well, because of your plan, you know how we all came back to Camp Half Blood for today. Chiron said that since we were married, we could sleep in the same cabin. Annabeth is with Percy, Leo is with Calypso, and Frank is with Hazel. They were obviously the most empty cabins." Jason explained.

"Jason, who is it?" Piper called again. She walked to the door in pink pajamas and slippers. "Oh, hi, Will," she said sleepily. "I thought you weren't coming to get us until eight this morning."

"That was the original plan, but... Uh..." Will started rubbing the back of his neck nervously.

Piper sighed. "Come on in. I'll make some tea, so you can relax. You really shouldn't be worried about it. Nico loves you."

"Thanks, Piper," Will said gratefully. He followed her and Jason into the cabin.

"Do you think the plan is okay? What if he doesn't have a good time? What if he hates everything?" Will started asking, his panic building.

Piper sighed as she heated a cup of water in a portable microwave Jason put in the cabin. She took the steaming cup of water out and placed a tea bag in it before she spoke. "I promise you, he's going to have an amazing time. You've asked us this before remember? Besides, Annabeth helped make the plan. You know those never fail."

"I know, but what if-"

Piper shoved the cup of tea into Will's hands. "No more what ifs. It'll go smoothly, Will. Trust me. He loves you, so even if it doesn't go as planned, he'll say yes anyway. He'll just be happy you made the effort." Piper said, putting a little charmspeak into her words to make Will calm down.

Will sighed. "You're right. Thanks, Pipes."

As Will sipped his tea, Jason leaned close to Piper. "Especially since Nico-"

Piper swatted her husband away frantically and hissed, "Not now!"

A few hours later, Nico woke up earlier than usual. He was confused as to why he woke up until he heard whispering and giggling. He turned over, and then quickly turned back around screaming, "Oh gods Hazel! You woke me up, and I did not need to see you changing first thing in the morning! Also, Frank, what the Hades are you doing here!"

"Oh my gods! Nico, I thought you would still be sleeping! I am so sorry for waking you up!" Hazel yelled while quickly pulling up her jeans.

"That still doesn't answer the gods dam question as to why the Hades Frank is here!" Nico screamed.

"I... Uh... I..." Frank stuttered, his face turning a deeper red by the second.

"He's my husband, Nico! It's fine!" Hazel exclaimed, but she was also blushing as deep of a shade of red as Frank.

"I'm just going to... You know..." Frank ran outside of the cabin, leaving Hazel and Nico alone.

Hazel sighed. "You can look now, Nico."

Nico cautiously turned on his side and faced a thankfully fully clothed Hazel. "Haze, what the Hades-"

"Nico, Frank's my husban," Hazel huffed.

"I know, but-"

"He is allowed to see me changing, and I swear we didn't do anything last night!"

"Okay, but-"

"Neeks-"

"Hazel for the gods sakes your my little sister! This is still not okay!" Nico finally managed to say.

"You gave him permission to ask me if I wanted to marry him," Hazel pointed out while folding her arms.

"Yes, I know, but you don't need to do that in the cabin where I am sleeping!" Nico protested.

"We didn't do anything! I was changing out of my pajamas!" Hazel exclaimed. "Besides, you're one to talk since you plan on proposing today!"

"That's today?" Nico jumped out of bed and ran to his dresser in order to throw on some clothes. He stopped just as he was about to open his pants drawer. "Wait a second. I was going propose to him tomorrow. I didn't want to propose to him on my birthday, remember?" He said pointedly to his sister.

Hazel rolled her eyes. "Then Jason and I talked you out of it, and you said you would do it today."

"I really don't think I-" Nico began only to be cut off by Hazel.

"We have everything already set up! If you don't do it today, Will is going to notice everything anyway." Hazel reasoned.

"What?" Nico went back to scrambling to throw on some clothes. He grabbed his suit he would change into later and laid it on his bed. He checked on the ring hidden in his night stand. Leo made it for him. It had a gold Imperial Gold band with a strip of black Stygian Iron in the middle. The top where the jewel goes was a Celestial Bronze plate. On top of the plate were two jewels that Hazel got for him. One was a piece of gold, and the other was an obsidian stone. The gold was cut into the shape of half of a sun while the obsidian was cut into the shape of half of a skull before the two stones were melded together. He closed the drawer, and when he turned back around, Hazel was gone.

While Nico had been changing, Hazel ran out of the cabin and knocked furiously on Jason's door. Jason's face appeared in the doorway. He looked really tired. "Jason! We have an emergency. Nico-"

Jason started flapping his arms everywhere and hissing, "Shh! Not right now!"

Hazel put her hands on her hips. "But Nico-"

"Shh!"

"Don't shush me! I need to-" Hazel began before she looked behind Jason's shoulder, and her voice died.

"Thanks, Pipes! I'm going to go see if Leo has the fireworks ready." Will came walking down the hallway with Piper closely behind him. "Oh, hey, Hazel! Is Nico awake?" He asked worriedly.

Hazel nodded. "That's actually what I came to discuss with Jason and Piper. We're going to distract him. It's okay. We have it under control."

Will sighed in relief. "Thanks, guys." He ran off toward the forges, and Hazel grabbed the neck of Jason's shirt and dragged him back inside the cabin.

"Ow! Hazel what the Jupiter!" Jason protested.

"We have a problem," Hazel said.

Piper followed them back to the beds and sat down on one. "What happened?"

"I couldn't convince Nico that he decided to propose today, so I kind of said we already had everything set up," Hazel said while wringing her hands together nervously.

"What?" Jason shouted while jumping off the bed he was sitting on. "How are we going to set everything up and keep Nico distracted without Nico noticing? Not to mention we still need to set up Will's plans."

"We can split off into smaller teams. I can take Frank, Percy, and Annabeth to set up Nico's things; you, Piper, Reyna, and Thalia can distract Nico and Will. You can switch off or split up. It doesn't really matter. Anyway, Calypso is making the food for the picnic, Leo is finishing the fireworks and other mechanical things, so that leaves Lou Ellen and Cecil to set up what Will has planned." Hazel said.

Piper shook her head. "Lou Ellen and Cecil would need help. Maybe we can get Katie and Travis to help them out."

Jason nodded. "I'll ask if that's okay with Will." He then ran out of the cabin and flew into the air.

For the next few hours, everyone was running around the camp and trying to avoid each other at all costs. There were several phone calls made to make reservations at restaurants, and somehow rainbow glitter found it's way into the grass from one side of the camp to the other. Jason told Will to go take a shower at one in the afternoon because it was an hour before he had to go to the restaurant. Reyna told Nico the same thing. Jason and Reyna ran into Will and Nico's cabins and grabbed the rings. They passed each other half way through the courtyard in the middle of the cabins and discreetly switched rings. Then they put the rings back inside their hiding places.

It was five minutes before two when Will walked out of his cabin, holding a boquet of deep red roses. He was wearing his best blue suit with a black and yellow tie Nico had given him for Valentines Day last year. He was halfway to the Hades cabin when Nico walked out in his black suit and deep blue tie with silver stars speckled on it. He was holding a boquet of light pink and white roses. Will gasped when he saw Nico. Nico turned around in confusion, and his jaw dropped when he saw Will. "W-Will?" He stuttered.

Will blushed. "I was... Uh... Do you... Do you want to go out on a date with me? I have a reservation and everything..." His voice died in his throat.

"Oh... Uh... I was actually going to tell you the same thing," Nico cleared his throat nervously.

Just then Jason flew down between them. He was breathing heavily and looked exhausted. "Good thing... We accidentally made... The same reservation... For the both of you." Jason panted. Will and Nico looked at him suspiciously, but Jason waved them off. "You only... Have a few minutes... Nico you should probably... Shadow travel."

Nico checked his watch and cursed. He grabbed Will's arm, and before the other man could protest, they were standing in front of a fancy restaurant. "Death Boy, what did I tell you about shadow traveling?!" Will said teasingly.

Nico rolled his eyes and punched his arm playfully. "It's been years since I was in danger of dying, Solace. Lighten up."

"Excuse me is one of you Mr. Solangelo?" A waiter walked up to the two men.

They groaned. "Was this Jason's idea?" Nico asked exasperatedly while he tried to conceal his nervousness.

"Probably," Will said while he tried not to fidget with the ring box in his jacket.

The waiter sighed. "Is this your reservation or not? We have people who would be willing to take your place you know."

"Yes, it's our reservation," Will said quickly.

The waiter nodded and took them to the second floor and out on to the balcony. The balcony over looked Central Park. It was the best table in the restaurant. "At least Jason knows how to pick a table," Will laughed nervously.

"Yeah. Wait, why did you have Jason make the reservation?" Nico asked.

Will blushed. "I was... Uh... Why did you have Jason make the reservation?"

Nico blushed too. "You know what, it doesn't matter. I haven't seen you all day. What have you been up to?"

"Oh, well I've just been hanging out with some friends I haven't gotten to see in a while. What about you?" Will said awkwardly.

"Pretty much the same thing. Oh look, the food us here." Nico's hand jerked to his pocket one last time to make sure the ring was still there before he took his plate of food.

While they were eating, the conversation grew easier and less tense. They stayed at the restaurant for two hours just talking before both Nico and Will got a text from Jason. As discreetly as possible without the other knowing, they looked down at their monster proof phones.

Jason: Dude, where are you? It's been two hours!

"Schist!" Will and Nico exclaimed at the same time. They then looked at each other in confusion and laughed.

"We should get going. I've had other things planned for you back at camp." Will said.

Nico looked up at him nervously. "I actually had something planned when we got back to camp too."

"Oh... Uh... What is it?" Will asked while nervously patting his pocket to make sure the ring was still there.

"It's a surprise," Nico said smugly.

Will sighed. "Mine was a surprise too."

"How about we both say what we were planning to do at the same time," Nico suggested while subconsciously putting his hand in the pocket with the ring. He really hoped he didn't have to ruin his plans.

"Okay," Will agreed. "One, two, three."

"Picnic in the strawberry fields," both men said at the same time. They looked at each other and laughed in relief.

"I'll pay for the dinner," Nico offered.

"No, I'm paying," Will argued.

At that point the waiter came up with a slight cough. "Actually, a woman with long black hair had come to the restaurant a while ago and paid for you two."

Will and Nico looked at each other. "Reyna," they groaned.

They started laughing as they walked out of the restaurant, and Will finally let Nico shadow travel them back to camp. Both Will and Nico ran to their cabins where Calypso had promised to leave the picnic baskets. When they came back out, they walked arm in arm down to the strawberry fields. The laughed and talked for a little while before Nico brought out cookies (that he was not expecting to be blue. Thanks, Percy.), and Will brought out a birthday cake (which was also blue).

They both sighed. "Percy."

"Will, why in all of the Olympian gods do you have a birthday cake?" Nico asked in slight irritation.

"It's your birthday, Death Boy," Will laughed. "Happy birthday!"

"Will," Nico rolled his eyes I'm exasperation.

"You have to eat it. Doctor's orders." Will demanded.

"Whatever," Nico said while trying to hide a small smile.

They enjoyed the cookies and cake and stayed in the strawberry fields until sunset. Will got up and helped Nico up. "Why don't we go watch the sunset on the beach?" He asked.

"Alright," Nico smiled. He hadn't planned on going to the beach just yet, but at least they weren't going away from there.

They walked hand in hand down to the edge of the water and watched the sun sink below the horizon. One by one the stars blinked into life, and the last pink glow disappeared over the horizon. "Want to take a walk?" Nico asked nervously.

"I was actually hoping to ask you that," Will said with a smile.

They both got up and walked in silence down the beach in the moon light. After they've walked for a while, Will broke the silence. "I really love you Death Boy. I've loved you since the day we met. Although you can be stubborn when it comes to your health-" Nico laughed at that, and Will had to wait until he calmed down. "You are the most amazing person I have ever met. I feel like the luckiest man in the world whenever I look into your eyes, and I know that you're mine. I really love you, Death Boy. I wouldn't trade you for the world."

Nico's eyes began to tear up, but before Will got down on one knee like he had planned, Nico started talking. "Sunshine, you are an absolute sap." Both men started laughing. "Anyway, I may have thought you were the incredibly annoying and hot doctor when I first met you, but I fell in love with you the day you held me through my first nightmare at camp. It was the day that I realized you really did care about me, and I realized I didn't want to lose you. I would die if it meant protecting you, and I know what you are going to say so don't open your mouth now. Just listen." Will had indeed opened his mouth to argue his point. They have had this argument for years, and Will was never going to give up trying to convince Nico not to die for him.

Nico took a deep breath before continuing. "If you did die and I was still alive, I would try to live for you too. You are amazing, kind, and so caring. I love you, Sunshine. I love you from the moon and stars and back. You are my everything."

Will started tearing up too, and they both stopped walking. They turned to each other, got down on one knee, and said at the same time, "Nico Di Angelo/Will Solace, will you marry me?"

They both stared at each other in silence. Then they both got to their feet and awkwardly walked over to each other. "Is that a yes then?" Will asked in confusion.

"Um... Wait, that's my ring I was going to give to you!" Nico exclaimed and pointed to the ring in Will's ring box.

Will looked down and saw that it was a ring he did not recognize. He looked into Nico's ring box and saw that his ring he was going to give to Nico was in Nico's box. "What-"

"JUST SAY YES ALREADY!!" The seven, Reyna, Thalia, Calypso, Lou Ellen, Cecil, Travis, and Katie jumped out from behind a bush at the edge where the sand met the grass.

"I'M GOING TO KILL YOU!!" Will and Nico screamed.

The others laughed. "That's a yes alright! Leo, start the fireworks!" Thalia shouted.

Fireworks went off into the sky, and Nico and Will just looked at each other and rolled their eyes. "Yes, Death Boy, I'll marry you," he laughed. "Only if you'll marry me though."

Nico gave him a sideways smile. "I think we can arrange that. Well, it might be them again, but who knows." They both laughed and kissed under the star lit sky that was now bursting of colors with the fireworks, and their friends cheered behind them.
