Chapter 9

My foot swiftly moved to the brakes as I skidded the truck over another horde of Roamers. "Did you hit 'em?" Garroth yelled from the back.

"WO! YEAH SHE DID!" Vylad laughed, clinging to the seats as I stopped the car to take a deep breath. Turning around I opened the window.

"You guys good?"

"My brain feels scrambled," Zane complained.

"That's how you're gonna feel-" the drivers door opened and there was a man, not a Roamer, but a man standing there. He reached for my leg and I quickly grabbed a pistol, shooting one through his skull.

"OH MY IRENE, WHY'D YOU DO THAT!?"

"WE DON'T KNOW HIM!"

"HE COULD HAVE LEAD US TO A SAFE HAVEN!" Zane growled.

"He could have also take our supplies!" Vylad countered. The back doors swung open and more men rushed in, I aimed the pistol at them and fired a round, but they kept coming. Soon they were trying to grab Vylad and I too. He grabbed my wrist and gripped it tightly. "Don't let go of me, don't let-"

Smack!

My head hit the pavement as I was yanked out of his grasp. Struggling with all I had, trying to escape these lunatics, whoever they were. "Stop struggling, girl!"

"Let go of me you bastards!" I screamed, managing to throw a few punches, and land a kick in the 'sun don't shine' area. One of them produced a rope and bound my hands together tightly, and yanked me to my feet.

"...A lot of fight in such a small girl... what a shame it had to be wasted here."

"Let go of her!" Vylad screamed, pulling at the men. "She needs to get to, O'Khasis City!"

"We have a cure!" Aphmau yelled. "We can end this!"

"Yeah, sure. We've been looking for a cure before there was even an apocalypse. There's no way a couple of rascals like you could find a cure in such a short time."

"It's in my blood! It's in my blood! You can test it!" I screamed. One of them wrenched me onto the ground and I looked up at Vylad, then to Aphmau, Zane, and Garroth.

They all looked terrified, confused, and angry. I nodded to the truck, they all seemed confused. So I guess we were getting out of this one the hard way. A taller man approached me, a knife and vile in hand. I let him cut my arm open, but the normal red didn't come from my arm.

It was a black, like the Roamers, he quickly collected as much as he could in the vile before putting in the stopper. The liquid continued to trail down my arm as he walked away to talk to the others about the situation. The others were forced to sit next to me. "What's the plan?" Garroth asked.

"Sit in a circle, I managed to snatch a knife off of one of them," Zane whispered. We all adjusted ourselves so we were leaning against each other. I was in between Vylad and Zane. The knife made a low gnawing noise as Zane cut his bonds before pressing the blade into my palm. We continued this until we were all free.

"Okay... now what?" Aphmau asked, sounding uneasy.

"We make it to the truck and run over these bastards," a low growl erupted from my throat as I spoke. Everyone could hear the bitterness in my voice.

"On the count of three." Vylad declared, quietly.

"One..." Garroth whispered.

"Two..." Zane lowered his voice.

"Three!" I snapped. We all pushed to our feet and bolted to the truck. We got in the same seating arrangements and I stepped on it, running over a few of the men as Vylad tried to wrap my arm.

"Hurry up! They're aiming guns at us!" Zane squealed. Garroth handed me the sniper through the window.

"Vylad take the wheel!" I yelled opened ing the window so I could lean out and take them down. I quickly aimed and shot one of them as they started shooting back, following us in their own vehicles that must have been hidden in the brush. A few bullets whizzed by my head as I fired back, aiming for their tires. I saw one pointing at our back wheel, about to press the trigger. "VEAR LEFT!"

But it was too late, he'd already pull the trigger and we lost the tire, which caused a jolt that almost threw me out of the truck, but Vylad grabbed me by the waist and pulled me back into the truck as it veered off the road.

The others were screaming, my ears were ringing, there was coughing and dust settling as I opened my eyes. I was laying next to Vylad, laying on broken glass, we must have broken through the window. He seemed to be in better condition than me, because he almost immediately stood up and dragged me into an underbrush. A groan escaped my lips, but he covered my mouth with his hand. "Be quiet."

I turned my head to see the men pulling Aphmau, Zane, and Garroth out of the truck. My eyes widened as they were dragged back to the other vehicles. Vylad had his hands clenched into fists, jaw tight into an angry line. He stood up like he was going to run out after them, quickly I grabbed his arm. "Don't."

"Why not? We need to save them!" He whispered. I managed to gather my bearings for a moment and say myself up so I could look him in the eye.

"What good are we to them if we're in captive with them? If we get caught too then we defiantly don't have any chance of survival. If we stay behind we actually have a chance at getting everyone out alive. So what are you going to do?"

He seemed to consider running after them again, but the cars took off before he could even run out. His whole body sulked. "Let's go save them, then."
