Chapter 5
I woke up laying on a cot, obviously not in the helicopter anymore. The girl we'd taken with us was sitting next to me, hands bound, sleeping. I sat up, grunting at the pain in my ankle. My arm felt weak and it wouldn't stop shaking. It was still bandaged and stained with blood.
I looked around and saw the others resting, aside from Vylad who had his gun placed in his hands. He glanced at me and sighed. "How do you feel?"
"What?" I asked, rubbing my eyes, with the palm of my hand.
"How do you feel?" He stood up, walking over to me.
"I feel... dead... but that might be from the bear trap." I chuckled. He shook his head, laughing quietly.
"Let me check your arm." I looked at him with a questionable look. "Do you remember what happened after the bear trap?"
"No. Not much." I shook my head.
"You were bit... and possibly cured. According to her the bite should have healed by now." I nodded. He took my arm gently and slowly unwrapped the covering. I winced as he peeled the sticky bandage from my arm. His eyes widened as he examined my arm. "It's healed!"
"Really?" I smiled, looking at my arm. All there was to show that I was bitten was a faint scar. The girl woke up quickly, and saw me looking at my arm. Her eyes widened and she moved slightly closer.
"It worked! It worked! It really worked!" I moved away from her, startled. "Ahem... sorry."
"Do you know how to make more of this?" Vylad asked her.
"Yes! I just need. Wingate Pero-"
"Okay, I don't even know what that is, wait until we find the doctors." I grunted, I moved my legs over the edge of the cot. "So where are we?"
"We're at a military base on the edge of the Capital in Belize." Vylad said, standing up. He held his hand out to me, and helped me to my feet, holding me up. "GUYS GET UP!"
Garroth, Zane, and Aphmau all sat up holding their weapons, ready to strike. "Calm down!" I croaked, and they turned to me.
"Oh my Irene, did you heal?" Aphmau asked. I nodded and she sighed in relief, jumping up to hug me. Soon Garroth and Zane were apart of this hug and I laughed.
"Guys we have to deal with something else first." I turned my head towards the girl, and Vylad handed me my daggers. I sat down across from her, grabbing a stone off the ground to sharpen the blades. I put away any happy emotions and focused on the bad. "So what's your name?"
"Fallen." She mumbled.
"Why are you still with us?"
"Because you took me captive."
"Do you know where the other doctors are?"
"Not here. They're all the way in O'Khasis City, I think." She nodded and shrugged.
"Good. Because we're leaving you here." I tossed the stone to the side and she shook her head.
"But you need me to make the cure again!" I shrugged.
"But there's one thing you forgot. It's already in my blood we don't need you anymore. You're just dead weight that we'd have to carry with us. Enjoy with Roamers... oh and if you see my dad, tell him I said hi." I smiled. I grabbed her by the arm and pushed her towards the door, I grabbed Aphmau's crossbow from her hand and pointed it at Fallen. "Now walk out there."
"But-"
"Walk. Out. There." I knocked an arrow and she walked out the doors and was immediately attacked by Roamers. I heard several gasps from the others as I faced them.
"Was that necessary?" Aphmau asked, covering her mouth. I nodded.
"She was just going to get us killed... now. Let's head to Brazil." I clapped my hands and Garroth tossed me the rest of my gear and I strapped up. Then, Vylad lead us out back to an army truck. I opened the back to find boxes. Garroth gave me a boost and I opened one, pulling a package of army food out and tossing it to him. He caught it and glanced at me smiling, getting in the back with me, closing the door. I opened the slide window and handed Vylad, Zane, and Aphmau a package too.
Zane, laughed at the crummy jam packets, but didn't dis them. Vylad started up the truck and they buckled up while Garroth and I found a place to sit.
Soon the truck lurched to a start and we were on our way to Brazil. "Was it hard?"
"What do you mean?" I asked Garroth, munching on my food. He took another bite and held up a finger.
"To just... force her to get herself killed."
"No. Sometimes we had to kill people in the army. The one's who told our secrets to people... basically spies."
"Dad... what are they doing to Carlson?" I asked, watching as they forced him to his knees. I waited for an answer, but I didn't get one. I looked up to my dad and saw anger twisted in his face. "Dad?"
"They're giving him everything he deserves." I watched as the leader pointed a gun to Carlson's head and slowly pressed the trigger. The Desert Storm was a lie.
"I was fifteen when they killed my best friend, Carlson. He was secretly working for the Russians. My dad didn't even try to stop them. He didn't even try to stop me from looking."
"That must have been rough." I shrugged.
"The last thing my dad said to me that day was... was 'you can't always see them at first... but your best friend may be the very one who pulls the trigger on you'." I looked to the closed door. "Then for my initiation I was supposed to execute a thirteen year old boy. I was twenty two."
"Did you kill him?"
"I did... and you know how I felt?" I asked, looking up.
"Did you feel guilty?"
"...No. I felt good. It feels good to kill people who deserve it." I mumbled, looking down. "But looking back at it now. I think I did him a favor. At least he's not here anymore."
