Acceptance (part three)
Slowly, he closes his mouth, handing a hesitant hand to the man, and shakes his. He never actually gave any handshake in his life, and maybe it is the reason why he is crying now. Or maybe it's something else. He doesn't want to know. He feels the warmth of the other guy in his palm, and it amazes him.
As Deadpool let go of his hand, Peter looks back again at the Stark Tower, without saying a word. He doesn't want to end the moment, or to break it. Under his mask, well hidden by the fabric, his tears are rolling down his cheeks, not fast enough to arrive to his jaw before getting absorbed. In a moment like this, it is the only thing he could think of in order not to start overthinking. All his attention is focused on those little drops of salted water that are coming out of his eyes. Even the lights in the distance aren't this important. Maybe it is because of the tiredness, maybe he unconsciously tries to calm himself down and to believe Wade. He doesn't know.
He is afraid, a part of him is aware of it. He can feel the fear in his belly, and Peter doesn’t have to search to find the reason. How long has it been since he have let someone in ? Since he had let someone help him ? He’s not so sure, but it was certainly not when he was in his Spiderman suit. Meeting Wade now, in those circumstances, and agreeing to give him his real name; it’s all so scary. Why did he have to go there once again tonight ? Why did he muttered his name without thinking about it ? He doesn’t want to let Deadpool in his life, it would only lead him to pain and abandon. He knows it, he is well aware of how it will end - he lived it way too many times not to remember. He can do everything he wants, his throat is still tight, shivers are still running down his spine, and his stomach won’t stop hurting and twisting. He is afraid, he has to admit it. He feels stupid in a way, because for once he is the cause of his own fear, he is the one that put himself in this situation; he can’t blame anyone else. He feels the urge to scream, and to hide his face in his palms, but he stays still, his eyes on the lights in front of him - though he can’t really see them.
He has to accept the situation, despite the voice in his head telling him to run away and to never come back, to not make the same mistake again. He wa
ants to listen to it, he really does; but he also feels stucked. The leather man by his side, he can’t move. He doesn’t feel any type of guilt though, he just can’t bring himself to move. As if being there was actually pleasing for him.
Nothing make sense in Peter’s head, and he feels way to many things for such an early hour in the morning. Sure, he still is tired and still feels horrible, but Wade brought to the surface of his mind so many thougts and feelings - he doesn’t even know how the guy did it. His spirit is a mess, whereas his body seems so calm, mirroring the streets’ atmosphere.
When he thinks about it, evenrything is calm, almost sweet. The lights don’t hurt his eyes by their brightness, there is almost no noise surrounding him, and eve the sky appears clear and beautiful. The teen’s facial muscles twitch, and he can’t help but let a little smile take place on his face. He feels weirdly at peace, sitting at the top of this building, so high that he has the impression to be able to see absolutely everything. As the seconds pass, his eyes starts to become wattery again, and Peter wants to laugh. His emotions are a complete mess, and nothing makes sense. But he likes it.
“Do you feel better now, Spidey ?” Wade’s voice interrumpts the flow of his thoughts, and the boy turns his head toward the guy by instinct.
Deadpool still hasn’t put his mask back over his mouth and chin; and his lips are curled in a concerned grin, which makes Peter’s chest warm up slightly for the first time in what feels like eternity - though the last time was when Liz accepted to go with him to homecoming.
Acting without thinking about it, he grips the bottom of his mask and pulls it up until it’s in the same position as Wade’s, and smiles.
“Yeah, I guess,” he whispers, confusion flooding in his head at his behaviour. He doesn’t get why he let his guard down so suddenly and without feeling guilty about it. Does he really have control over himself ?
Deadpool’s grin grows bigger at that.
“I’m happy then,” he answers, daring to come a little closer to Peter, turning his whole body to face him and crossing his legs. “so can we chat ?”
The question takes Peter by surprise. The guy changed of behaviour so quickly that he almost feel amazed, and he can’t help but find it cute in a way.
“Yeah, I guess we can,” he doesn’t recognize his voice as he speaks, as it appears way too happy and calm to him.
Normally, the boy would be stressed out, anxious and stuttering a little, but here he is. His voice isn’t trembling and is filled with genuine joy - a type of joy he didn’t felt in months. It isn’t just in his tone though, it’s in all of his body. He didn’t realize it until now, but everything feels warm and all of his soreness and pain disappeared. He feels like floating, his eyes lighting up under his mask; and his chest and heart almost exploding because of everything inside him. It feels so weird, yet so good and right. Peter surely isn’t used to it, and a little part of him still is worried of how fast Wade made his mood change.
“So !” the boy concentrate once again on Deadpool as soon as he hears him and sees the cheeky smile on his face, “tell me about yourself, Petey.”
Peter isn’t really surprised by the question, though his eyes widened at how genuinely interested the guy seems. His chest warms up even more as he gets the feeling that at least Wade thinks he is worth it. He is worth the time it can take to get to know him, and it makes him so happy that tears appears in his eyes - but he his quick to blink them away.
And he does. He talks about himself, presents to Deadpool a part of his past, he tells him about the Avengers and Tony stark. They chat. It’s as simple as that, but the boy finds it almost unbelievable. And he doesn’t just speak, he also gets to hear about Wade’s story, how he quitted highschool and all sorts of studies two years ago when he was diagnosed with cancer, how he lives in a little flat with an old and blind lady that he considers family now… They don’t stop talking, even when the sun starts to rise once again, even when the town starts to wake up - they lost all sense of time. Except their suits and the fact that they are sitting at the very end of a rooftop, they seem like absolutely normal teenagers having a passionating discussion; and they are in a way. They talk about very interesting subjects, sharing to each other their own passions and interests.
Sure, Peter knows he eventually has to go, but he doesn’t want it to end. He feels listened, cared for, and he absolutely loves it. It’s not that his friends doesn’t make him feel the same way, it’s that he feels guilty towards them, for putting them through so much things; but he doesn’t with Wade - and he can’t find a reason why.
“You should accept you know,” Deadpool abruptely changes of subject, speaking in a way more serious tone. “Stark’s offer, I mean. I think it could be a plus for you, but also for the world. I feel like the Avengers need a hero like you. Like, yeah you’re young and it can be hard with school and everything but being a part of the team doesn’t mean having to participate in all of their missions, you know ? Or I don’t know… You could maybe give it a little try for around two weeks or a month and see how you handle it.”
Words won’t come out of Peter’s mouth once Wade has finished. He doesn’t know what to answer. The arguments are so simple it’s almost weird. He did think about it, a lot, but he never really thought about this way. He always considered the offer as something that would take too much time and would make him even more of a burden to everyone - without forgetting how the fear of not being accepted as himself and of failing almost paralyzed him. But now, wih Wade’s words, he feels ready. Because the other teen is right, he could still find ways to manage it, and if it goes wrong with the team he just has to quit it. Simple as that.
In front of him, Deadpool’s gaze grows worried as the boy stays silent. He observes him silently, not knowing what to do now.
“Karen,” Peter voice makes the leather guy jumps a little, “send a text to Mr.Stark saying I’d like to talk to him about the place in the Avengers team. I’m not saying I accept it, I just want to discuss some details before.” As he finishes, the boy shoots a big smile toward Wade, not saying anything until he hears Karen telling him the text has been sent in his ear.
And just like that, they start to chat once again, as if it never happened. Peter likes that. He likes that talking with Wade feels so natural and light, though they can be really serious too. He likes that the other teen doesn’t make him talk about what happened before, about his problems or anything bad at all. He likes talking with him. The feeling is so strong that when Karen informs him that he has to head back if he doesn’t want to be late at school, he doesn’t want to go.
With a loud sigh, he moves a bit, getting up. He doesn’t have to explain to Wade what is happening, he is also on his feet now, hesitating and talking to himself once again. Peter smiles, the way Deadpool doesn’t know how to act now that they have leave each other is endearing.
“Hey De,” the boy says as he stretches his arms, catching the other’s attention, “be safe on your trip home okay?”
Wade nods strongly, before grabbing Peter’s wrist to stop him, making him furrow an eyebrow.
“Can I have your number ?” Deadpool blurted out so quickly the boy struggles to catch all the words. “‘Cause like, you’re nice and I would like to talk to you and not just meet you when we end up here and, I get it if you don’t want to but- Shut up yellow ! But I mean, I think it could be nice you know ?”
Peter can’t help but smile when he sees him like that, but inside he doesn’t know what to do. At the back of his head, he can almost hear Ned telling him to give it to him, to let the poor guy in his life, to not care about anyone else for once in his life but he’s still unsure.
“I…” he starts but can’t find the words to finish his sentence.
“Oh god I knew it, I shouldn’t have listened to white,” Wade answers as soon as the silence grows between them, “it’s a bad idea I’m sorry, forget I talked about it I understand, it’s okay really. I mean, why would you want to talk to me and-”
“Wade !” Peter screams. He doesn’t control himself when he does, but he can’t hear Wade talk bad about himself like that, he can’t bear it. “Hey don’t say that ! I was…. I was just thinking, De, I promise. but sure you can have it. Gosh, don’t ever say that again, of course I want to talk to you ! Like…. You know what ? Just give me your phone.”
His tone his harsh at the end of his sentence, but he doesn’t care. he doesn’t want to hear Deadpool say such things about himself, and he doesn’t really know how to explain what was going on inside of his head just know. So he just waits for the guy to hand him his phone, before saving his number inside it quickly and handing it back.
“Here, be sure to send me a text so I can have yours,” he says with a confidence he didn’t know he had, and give Wade a little peck on the cheek before shooting a web to go back home. “Bye De !”
He lets the leather guy confused on the rooftop as he swing away, a light blush covering his cheeks. During all the way home, he plays the scene again in his head, until he reaches his window at the same time as Karen’s voice resonates in his ears.
“Peter, you received a message from an unknown number, should I read it to you ?”
The teen smiles before agreeing, “Sure.”
“Hey baby boy, I hope you’re back home now and all safe :)” the AI recits in a monotone voice making the boy choke on his spit as his face warms up.
“Thanks Karen,” he mutters quietly, “save the number under the name ‘Wade’ please.” Before he receives an answer, he starts undressing and picking out his outfit.
He sure is tired, and today will maybe be difficult, but oh boy does Peter feel happy right now. Maybe accepting all of that was a good idea.
That's it. That's the end of the chapter. Way lighter than the other parts right ?
Anyways, I really hope you liked it because I enjoyed way too much creating this sort of connection between the two characters (either the way they always meet up when everyone is asleep and all, like it feels out of time for me).
The next chapter will maybe take a little bit more time to come out as I am currently writing it, I apologize in advance.
Stay safe and hydrate,
H.
