77. Sharon
I join Steve and Sam quickly to greet the lady from the funeral. Steve pulls me aside to update me before we meet her.
"I talked to that women who was speaking at Peggy's funeral." Steve was hesitant to say Peggy's name.
"What'd you talk about that involves us?" I raise an eyebrow.
"She was a S.H.I.E.L.D agent, was on our side during Alexander Pierce's tantrum." Steve explains, "She's good at what she does and was apologetic when she never really approached me when she knew Peggy I guess."
"Alright." I only give him little response, "Just tell me what to do."
"I will, we're meeting soon but I wanted you to tell me what happened." Steve began making me stiffen in my place, "When you ran away, why was that?"
"I was being overemotional. That's all." I put vaguely.
"Sam said he worded something wrongly and hurt your feelings. But said it wasn't his place to explain..." Steve looks me in eyes with care, "You can tell me."
"Rather not." I returned and began walking forward, "I'm ready to leave whenever."
-
"My mom tried to talk me out of enlisting, but, um, not Aunt Peggy. She bought me my first thigh holster." The lady who goes by Sharon reminisced.
Steve smiles as we walk her to the hotel, we enter as he nods, "Very practical."
"And stylish." She replies as we wait by the elevator.
"CIA has you stationed over here now?" I question.
Sharon answers, "In Berlin, Joint Terrorism Task Force."
"Right. Right. Sounds fun." Steve replies.
Sharon laughs, "I know, right?"
"Peggy was apart of S.H.I.E.L.D. Were your parents?" I raised an eyebrow and she shook her head, "Did they approve of it?"
Steve put simpler when Sharon stayed silent, "Did Peggy know?"
"She kept so many secrets. I didn't want her to have one from you." The elevator arrives and Sharon gives us a thankful smile. "Thank you for listening to me."
"Thank you for all your help." I reply with a grateful grin.
"Anything for the Cold Shoulder and the man in stripes." Sharon laughed.
"Steve. There's something you gotta see." Sam told urgently.
"A bomb hidden in a news van..." A tv updates us right as Sam gestures to watch.
"Who's coordinating?" I stare at the screen.
"...ripped through the UN building in Vienna." The tv answers.
"Good. They're solid. Forensics?" Sharon adds.
The news anchor informs us, "More than 70 people have been injured. At least 12 are dead, including Wakanda's King T'Chaka. Officials have released a video of a suspect who they have identified as James Buchanan Barnes, the Winter Soldier. The infamous Hydra agent, linked to numerous acts of terrorism and political assassinations."
I stare at Steve and hesitate, "Nat was there."
"I better call her, let's go." Steve gestures us to follow.
"But the accords." My voice shakes with urgency, "I know you want to help Bucky but you know what will happen if you do."
"Yes I do. I know the risks." Steve looks at me as we hurry forward toward the hectic aftermath. "You coming?"
"I really want us to be a team." I admit, "I don't know if you want me on your team."
"Of course I do." Steve tells, "You're the one I need most on the team."
As we rush I grab onto him as Sam goes into flight as well, "Then I'm there."
-
Steve dials Nat's number and she answers right away, "You alright?" He says in his disguise, looking in her direction when she doesn't know it.
"Ah, yeah, thanks. I got lucky." Frowning she looks around, then stands up, "I know how much Barnes means to you. I really do. Stay home. You'll only make this worse. For all of us. Please."
"Are you saying you'll arrest me?" Steve replies and I stiffen.
"No. Someone will. If you interfere. That's how it works now." Nat becomes desperate in her words.
"If he's this far gone, Nat, I should be the one to bring him in." Steve explains making me sigh.
"Why?" She simply replies.
"Because I'm the one least likely to die trying." Steve hangs up immediately after.
"You sounded very cocky." I laugh slightly through the serious atmosphere.
"Was Rumlow right? Did you know Bucky remembered me?" Steve didn't take his eyes off Nat.
I hesitate and stopped laughing, "I talked to him after the fight and he seemed different." I fiddled with my fingers.
"Why didn't you tell me?" Slight anger slipped through his politeness, "And you let him leave?"
"You were unconscious, I was focused on you and he requested I leave him alone." I defend.
"We could've helped him." Steve suggested as nice as he could.
"You can't force him to your side." I stomp away finding Sam sitting off to the side of a cafe. He's casual and isn't tensed when he waits.
"She tell you to stay out of it?" He looks at us with shades as he questions Nat, "Might have a point."
"He'd do it for me." Steve tells looking at me slightly. He's not as agitated now or at least he isn't showing it to his friend.
"1945, maybe. I just want to make sure we considered all our options. The people that shoot at you usually wind up shooting at me." Sam grins.
"Tips have been pouring in since that footage went public. Everybody thinks the Winter soldier goes to their gym. Most of it's noise. Except for this." Sharon approaches after she dealt with the matter, "My boss expects a briefing, pretty much now... so that's all the head start you're gonna get."
"Thank you." Steve smiles.
"And you're gonna have to hurry. We have orders to shoot on sight." Sharon admits.
"Seriously thank you for doing this." I softly show my appreciation, "Helping strangers without question is heroic in itself."
"You flatter me." She replies with a respectful nod before leaving. I'm left with two people that avoid my eyes and I regret being apart of this hectic side.
"We gotta hurry and find him." Steve commands, "These documents will lead us to him."
"We can trust Sharon?" Sam asks and I debate.
"Of course we can." Steve glances my way when I confirm. "She's Peggy's relative."
"If we do this we all three have to be honest and trusting of one another." Steve tells, "That's what this team will be."
"I made a mistake, I'm sorry I never told you." I sigh finally apologizing, "I understood Bucky's shock and realization so I let him go without thinking of you."
"I apologize for overreacting. I shouldn't have yelled at you. We'll get him back and it'll be ancient history." Steve assures, "You followed your gut, it was probably the right thing to do."
"Thank you Steve." I smile feeling the weight lift from my shoulders.
"Let's go ahead and start searching." He lifts the documents and shows Sam. The documents don't hide that they're going to tell us the leads to Bucky.
Steve reads and scans the papers for a while, I imagine paper cuts on every finger tip. To make it less obvious we walked around at times and went different places. When Steve was occupied I ended up passing by Sam on an independent walk. He's approaching from the opposite side of the sidewalk and we meet each others eyes immediately.
"I guess these disguises aren't the best." Sam clears the air while slyly joining me in the different direction.
"Not at all." I awkwardly reply.
"Look what I said was unnecessary. I should've worded it differently." Sam said finally.
We stride casually and turn back to where we originally were, We can see the bench Steve has planted himself, "Don't worry about it. We have to focus anyway and I don't hold a grudge."
"Good cause I'm sorry." Sam grins and I roll my eyes mirroring his smile.
"If I hear one more apology today." I chuckle at my pretend threat, "But being a hypocrite, I'm sorry for my actions lately."
"No sweat. I'm here if you need anything." Sam shrugs and we stand before Steve who has furrowed brows.
"You find out a lead?" I question putting my hands on my hips.
Steve nods a little distracted, "Yes."
I grin at Sam then to Steve, "We'll follow you then."
"Suit up. I'm betting Sharon was right about us having to do a lot more than just pick him up and drive away." Steve looks up with worried eyes.
My smile faded at his words, "As long as we're careful it will be fine."
"I don't wanna put you all in jeopardy here." Steve reminds with a sigh, "You can back out-"
"No we're a team." I interrupt, "I know I haven't always wanted to be a team or envisioned I would be able to be in one. But I am, I'm choosing that now. I want to choose."
"We'll loose the ones who choose the accords." Sam recalls.
There's a pause and I listen to the traffic and the chatter. The silence is filled but the tension stays, "People don't always agree but forgiveness will happen in time. We'll figure it out like we always do."
Steve smiled thankfully, his eyes sparked and his words were expressed exactly that way, "Perfectly worded."
Sam broke our focus on each other, "Ok you two, where to?"
Steve replies, "Bucky's apartment."
