58. Back
"Longing, rusted, furnace-" The lady stops when I scream at her.
"Stop it! Stop it!" I cry out and she slams a fist to the metal table.
"Let me finish dammit." She spits at me and her men strap my wrists in tighter. My body feels the cold metal seat, the room is cold and metal too.
"Please... I just want to see my family..." I beg but she just reads from the red book again. A black star in the center mocks me.
-
"Are you alright?" Amara Wolf screams, "Is there anyone I should call?"
I wipe my tears remembering my flashback. A women in red, a women sick in the head. I look at Amara who is before me and recognize the same features, "I um... I'm ok."
She is shaking as she has a phone in her hand, "You collapsed for an hour."
"We got her, move." Paramedics placed me in a stretcher and are about to move me. I wiggle out of the bed and stand to my feet. Amara helps me stand noticing my shakiness.
"I'm sorry for calling them." She says, "I didn't know what else to do."
"Hey what's the hold up." The paramedics come to my side again but I shake them off.
"Not needed." I stutter a bit, still freaked out from the dream. "Thank you but I gotta run."
"Do you need help?" Amara questions and I shake my head as kindly as possible. I escape while in the midst of the chaos, jogging past the ambulance and the familiar streets I lived in years ago. I jog through the past until I find the bus stop I arrived at to wait for another bus. Slipping my cell from my pocket I check for messages from Steve, Wanda and Nat.
Nat: We're going for a run, where are you?
Wanda: Are you ok? You aren't in your room.
Steve: Hey Izzy, it's been 3 hours and everyone's concerned. I'm worried.
I send various texts back saying I'm fine and I enter the bus huffing. I sit down and rest my palm on my forehead. My eyes are wide and I try to calm down from the stressful event. I feel anxious so I dial for Tony, hoping he'd understand.
"Ok Shortie, what's the deal." Tony says through the phone, "I got Rogers giving me an ear full and I don't speak 40s."
I hear Steve in the background growl about how Tony is immature and I take a deep breath, "I had an episode, please don't tell them."
My begging works cause he says, "Ah nothing to worry about? That's exactly what I told the team."
I sigh with relief, "I was at my old apartment. It brought up some flashback back and I'm a little shaken up."
"Hurry home." Tony whispers after, "I don't think you can keep hiding this Shortie... These attacks keep reoccurring and we all just wanna help."
"I can't do that." I argue, now feeling back to normal, "I gotta do this alone."
"Wanda and Nat won't like that." I can hear Tony purse his lips in hesitance, "Steve definitely won't either."
"I shouldn't have called you." I regret aloud as the bus drops me off. I hang up and despise entering the headquarters. Everyone's in the training room bickering and Tony looks at me guiltily.
"Look I'm partly at fault but they were eavesdropping on our call because they were nosey." Tony raises his hands up in defense.
"Explain." Nat presses as she approaches me. She's sweaty from practice as she glares at me.
"Don't pester the girl." Tony says protectively, "As much as I'd like to see that."
"Watch it Stark." Steve snaps stepping into his personal space.
"Dinosaurs didn't go extinct!" Tony pretends to be frightful and I start to feel uneasy in my gut again.
Wanda notices and grasps my hand, "It's alright. Ignore them."
I breath in, "I don't like causing a scene."
"Please do." Nat interrupts, "We've seen them before, we just wanna help."
"I can't ask that of you." I respond.
"You don't have to." Steve says grabbing my other arm and pulling me away from the others.
