46. Afterparty attack
Steve snaps, "Stark."
Tony calls, "JARVIS."
The hunched over suit interrupts, "I'm sorry, I was asleep. Or...I was a-dream?"
"Reboot, Legionnaire OS, we got a buggy suit." Tony grabs a device and shakily tries to repair this being.
The figure arches it back and limps as it continues, "There was a terrible noise...and I was tangled in... in...strings. I had to kill the other guy. He was a good guy."
"You killed someone?" Steve asks concerned, even pissed.
"Wouldn't have been my first call. But, down in the real world we're faced with ugly choices." The iron defected suit implies but then looks at me, "Difficult choices I'm sure some of you can understand."
Thor roars, "Who sent you?"
"I see a suit of armor around the world" Tony's voice is played from the figure.
A lightbulb appears above Bruce's head as he yells, "Ultron!"
"You finally made him?" I look at Tony with joy but it mixes with anger as well. I don't know how to feel. "This is Ultron?"
"In the flesh. Or, no, not yet. Not this...chrysalis. But I'm ready. I'm on a mission." Ultron explains for us.
"What mission?" Nat tilts her head.
"Peace in our time." When Ultron finishes an Iron Legion bots break glass and enter the room. It's a brawl within seconds.
I watch Ultron grasp the scepter and I glare, "Hey, stop!"
"Isabelle Short." I can hear Ultron grin with his words through the crashing furniture and glass breaking behind me, "I have read all about you."
"Stark!" Steve desperately calls but he's preoccupied with the Iron Legion he's trying to defeat.
Tony stammers, "One sec, one sec!"
"Cap!" Clint throws Steve's lost shield to him. With it back in his possession Steve dismembers the very last Iron Legion.
"That was dramatic! I'm sorry, I know you mean well. You just didn't think it through. You want to protect the world, but you don't want it to change. How is humanity saved if it's not allowed to...evolve?" Ultron explains and lectures adding horror to the silent air. "With these? These puppets? There's only one path to peace: The Avengers' extinction." Thor throws his hammer at Ultron angrily and destroys him completely. The fear still lingers in the air and I stare at the broken iron legion head Ultron just crushed.
"All our work is gone. Ultron cleared out, used the internet as an escape hatch." I say after we take shelter in the lab. I'm pacing and shaking from anxiety.
Steve repeats, "Ultron."
"He's been in everything. Files, surveillance. Probably knows more about us than we know about each other." Nat explains.
"He's in your files, he's in the internet. What if he decides to access something a little more exciting?" Rhodey tells.
Maria gasps, "Nuclear codes."
James nods angrily, "Nuclear codes. Look, we need to make some calls, assuming we still can."
"Nukes? He said he wanted us dead." Nat tilts her head.
"He didn't say dead. He said extinct." Steve presses.
"He also said he killed somebody." Clint reminds.
Maria stops removing glass from her wound, "But there wasn't anyone else in the building."
"Yes there was." Tony brings up a projection of Jarvis who floats unraveled.
"Jarvis!" I exclaim sadly.
"This is insane." Bruce is taken aback.
"Jarvis was the first line of defense. He would've shut Ultron down, it makes sense." Steve nods, upset.
"No, Ultron could've assimilated Jarvis. This isn't strategy, this is...rage." Bruce completes before Thor grabs hold of Stark by his throat and holds him up strongly.
Clint rushes with his words, "Woah, woah, woah! It's going around."
"Come on. Use your words, buddy." Tony stammers.
"I have more than enough words to describe you, Stark." Thor replies angrily, I've never seen him so angry before.
"Thor! The Legionnaire." With Steve's words Tony is released.
"Trail went cold about a hundred miles out but it's headed north, and it has the scepter. Now we have to retrieve it, again." Thor grits his teeth.
"The genie's out of that bottle. Clear and present is Ultron." Nat says.
Dr. Helen Cho interrupts, "I don't understand. You built this program. Why is it trying to kill us?"
Tony cracks up suddenly and Bruce glares and shakes his head to make him stop. "You think this is funny?" Thor roars.
"No. It's probably not, right? Is this very terrible? Is it so...is it so...it is. It's so terrible." Tony wipes tears from his laughter.
"This could've been avoided if you hadn't played with something you don't understand." Thor chuckles.
Tony snaps back to being pissed, "No, I'm sorry. I'm sorry. It is funny. It's a hoot that you don't get why we need this."
"Tony, maybe this might not be the time to..." Bruce says but Tony glares.
Tony begins to scream, "Really?! That's it? You just roll over, show your belly, every time somebody snarls."
"Only when I've created a murder bot." Bruce replies, eyes wide.
"We didn't. We weren't even close. Were we close to an interface?" Tony defends.
"You didn't get close yet Ultron is here? How?" I question quietly.
"Well, you did something right. And you did it right here. The Avengers were supposed to be different than S.H.I.E.L.D." Steve reminds.
Tony interrupts, "Anybody remember when I carried a nuke through a wormhole?"
James doesn't change his expression, "No, it's never come up."
Tony reminds, "Saved New York?"
"Never heard that." I press.
"Recall that? A hostile alien army came charging through a hole in space. We're standing three hundred feet below it. We're the Avengers. We can bust arms dealers all the live long day, but, that up there? That's...that's the end game. How were you guys planning on beating that?" Tony lectures.
Steve replies confidently, "Together."
Tony rejects, "We'll lose."
"Then we'll do that together, too." Steve says strongly.
Tony looks away from Steve as I continue, "Thor's right. Ultron's calling us out. And I'd like to find him before he's ready for us. The world's a big place. Let's start making it smaller."
