32. Trust No One
Natasha goes to the hospital and meets up with Steve and I. We watch doctors operating on Fury through a glass.
Nat questions sorrily, "Is he gonna make it?"
I reply softly, "I don't know."
Nat gets curious, "Tell me about the shooter."
"He's fast and strong." Steve informs.
"Had a metal arm." I say, the image of his metal arm staining my brain. Just then Agent Maria Hill also joins us. I didn't see her approach. I haven't pulled my eyes away from Nick.
Nat asks hurriedly, "Ballistics?"
Maria sighs, "Three slugs, no rifling. Completely untraceable."
"Soviet-made." Nat confirms.
Maria nods, "Yeah." We watch in shock as Fury's state deteriorates. The doctors and nurses call things out to each other until Fury is flatlining.
Nat mourners to herself, "Don't do this to me, Nick."
Doctors yell, "Stand back! Three, two, one. Clear!" Fury is given a shock with the defibrillator. No pulse. No pulse. Fury is given another shock.
Nat repeats under her breath, "Don't do this to me, Nick. Don't do this to me." The four of us watch the doctors as they continue to revive Fury but Fury is still showing as flatlining. Steve turns away as they finally call his time of death. I look down at the flash drive Fury had given me and then look to Steve who notices. I pull it away as we enter the room where Fury's dead body has been laid out, Natasha is looking at Fury's body with tears running down her face. Me and Steve stare with expressionless faces.
"I need to take him." Hill tells and with that we leave.
Steve follows Natasha and calls out her name but she doesn't respond. Steve follows her, "Natasha!"
Nat turns sharply at Steve, "Why was Fury in your apartment?"
Steve shrugs, "I don't know."
"We heard music playing and he was just there." I help, Steve can't lie for the life of him. But I can.
"Cap, they want you back at SHIELD." Rumlow interrupts.
Steve nods not leaving his spot, "Yeah, give me a second."
Rumlow presses, "They want you now."
Nat is pissed as she says, "You're a terrible liar." Then she turns and walks off.
"What were you looking at earlier." Steve asks.
I glance at the vending machine, "Gum." He then hurried back to Rumlow and the other agents to join them as requested. I sneak the flash drive behind the gum and hush to find Nat. When I don't find her I return to the vending machine a while later. It's been a while since I searched for Nat and Steve so when I witness the missing drive Nick gave me I get nervous. Maybe I took too long. A man in casual clothes lingers and approaches the vending machine.
"I know you are hiding something." He presses. I see Steve behind the disguise before Natasha appears behind us. She's chewing some gum tauntingly. This angers me enough to bring them forcefully into a room close by.
"Where is it?" I growl at Nat who's snapping gum in her mouth.
Nat returns, "Safe."
Steve joins curiously, "Do better!"
"Where did you get it?" Nat looks at me dead in the eye.
"Why would I tell you? You're apart of S.H.I.E.L.D." I snap.
Nat argues, "Fury gave it to you. Why?"
Steve questions us both, "What's on it?"
"I don't know." Nat and I say.
Steve yells, "Stop lying!"
"I didn't have time to check." I scream back.
"And I only act like I know everything, Rogers." Nat tells with a smirk.
"I bet you knew Fury hired the pirates, didn't you?" Steve grits his teeth at Nat and I.
"What?" My tenseness becomes softened with confusion.
"Well, it makes sense. The ship was dirty, Fury needed a way in, so do you." Nat says simply.
Steve threatens, "I'm not gonna ask you again."
"I don't even know what you are talking about." I defend.
Nat reacts differently though, "I know who killed Fury. Most of the intelligence community doesn't believe he exists, the ones who do call him the Winter Soldier. He's credited with over two dozen assassinations in the last fifty years."
The name seems familiar, "How'd he get away with that." I murmur in shock.
Steve replies simply, "So he's a ghost story."
Nat shakes her head, "Five years ago I was escorting a nuclear engineer out of Iran, somebody shot out my tires near Odessa. We lost control, went straight over a cliff, I pulled us out, but the Winter Soldier was there. I was covering my engineer, so he shot him straight through me." She lifts her shirt up the tiniest bit and a scar is seen on her side, "Soviet slug, no rifling. Bye-bye bikinis."
"Yeah, I bet you look terrible in them now." I sympathize which makes Nat smile a little.
Nat confirms, "Going after him is a dead end. I know, I've tried. Like you said, he's a ghost story." Steve takes the flash drive from Nats hands.
"Well, let's find out what the ghost wants." Steve replies as I grasp the drive from his hands.
I tease him as I dangle it from my hands, "If we have to."
