Painful memories but closure's the key
After Divya was done with her chocolates, Drishti decided to ask her a seemingly silly question.
"Divi, tell me something. Why are you so scared of doctors?"
Divya noticeably tensed up. Everyone knows she was afraid of doctors but no one really asked her why. so she repeated whatever she said earlier. "They are mean and stupid. They are just glorified humans with injections."
Drishti frowned her brows. Why did she say that? "And why do you think they are mean, scary and stupid?.". when she didn't reply, drishti added a little more."That doctor gave you meds and see you are already looking better."
"I was lucky," she said monotonously.
Now Drishti was even more confused. Lucky? "Divya, what do you mean?".
"Nothing."
"Divya.". Drishti said sternly. Normally she wouldn't force her to speak. But today she felt the need. There was something Divya wasn't telling her. she wanted to but just couldn't. so she decided to push a little more. "please? whats wrong divi?".
Divya sighed and lowered her head, playing with her hands nervously. She could feel the tears burning her eyes but she refused to let them fall. "When Mumma papa met with that accident, they also went to the doctor. But they... they couldn't save them." those words were a lot less painful in her mind then out loud. She couldn't even look at Drishti. "people treat them like gods but their not! They cant be trusted. That doctor said that he will save them but he lied! They are gone.". She didn't realise when the tears started flowing or when Drishti pulled her in for a hug. She just cried onto her shoulder while she rubbing her back. "It was painful. Remember you gave me a petal that day to make my wish? I did but it never came true. They never came back."
"I am sorry divi. I never thought of it this way. But I am here and I am not going anywhere. What happened to them will not happen to either of us.". Drishti paused before something clicked. "Divi, you never ever visited Mumma papa's grave after the funeral. Do you think your wish will come true?". Divya just tightened her grip around her.
it all started making sense: the tantrums, the threats, the fear in her eyes every time the word 'doctor is mentioned', the change of topic every time their parents were mentioned. It all made sense. She composed herself and calm down the shaking Divya. If she kept crying the fever could come back and that is not a good thing.
" it's ok we'll get through this together. Mumma papa can't come back but they will always be with us in our hearts.". She pointed to the window into the night sky where the stars seemed to be shinning a little more brightly today. "Remember what they used to say about stars?"
"They are the people that have passed on. They are watching us from up there.". Her voice was muffled by Drishti's shoulder but she managed to get her message across.
She gently pulled away and cupped her face, brushing some tears away with her thumb. "Mumma papa are watching us. Every night. They see how we are doing. They will be upset to see you like this.". She said. "I get what you mean but divi the doctor tied their best right? If we need medical attention we have to see a doctor. I promise that I will try my best that days never come. Ok?".
Divya looked at her hands and waited for her to continue. " I know you are upset. I know its hard. we may never truly get relief from the pain but we can get closure. baby steps." she paused and gave her a minute to process what she was saying before asking, "maybe you want to come with me to see Mumma papa tomorrow?".
Divya nodded her head and wiped her eyes. She felt light. Like a burden she ha been carrying has been lifted. After ignoring the pain for so long, its high time to face it. Ignoring was a temporary escape. She wasn't fully recovered and maybe she never will be. But its a step closer to closure.
She smiled at her sister, telling her that she fine. Drishti kissed her forehead and left the room to put back the tray in the kitchen.
She decided that she was going to forget it for now and focus on getting rid of the sickness she recently got.
she looked around the room in amazement. "Di ka kamra kitna saaf hai. It's weird. Woh kaise reh lati hai yaha. Par Ab mian kiya karun. Bohot bore ho rehi hoon.", suddenly she got an idea and smiled contently while turning her head to the side table.
