CHAPTER 17 - "It Wasn't Like That."
OCTAVEUS
I SNUCK back into the den, closing the front door behind me as quietly as I could. All of the lights were off and no one seemed to be awake yet. At least, they didn't until Jessie flicked on the kitchen light as I was walking through the room.
"Where have you been all night?" He asked, crossing his arms and giving me a sly smirk.
"Um. . ." I hesitated. "Not Drew's house?" So much for not leaving.
"Uh-huh," Jessie nodded, his smirk growing.
"Shut up," I muttered. "It wasn't like that."
"Sure," he obviously didn't believe me. "Then what was it like?"
"Well. . . Uh. . ." I didn't know how to answer that.
Jessie rolled his eyes. "Exactly," he said. I grumbled and stalked off to my room while he chuckled behind me.
SUMMER
"Hey, Vee," I said to my friend, coming up behind him while we were waiting for the school to open.
"Hi Summer," he responded, not looking at me. He was watching someone standing at the doors of the school. I followed his gaze.
"Who are you looking at?" I asked. Just then Drew appeared through the mass of students milling around the doors; he looked in our direction and smiled nervously at Vee, who smiled back.
I looked from Drew to Vee, then back again. "Did something happen between you two?" I said suspiciously, smirking. Vee looked down at me out of the corner of his eye.
"Maybe."
"Oooo, what was it?" I started fidgeting in excitement. I hope they're dating, please say you're dating.
Vee smirked at my excited fidgeting. "I'll tell you at lunch," he said and began to limp away.
"Lunch?" I complained. "Why not now?"
He smirked at me over his shoulder, shrugged, and continued walking up to Drew. Drew's face looked slightly red and he and Vee started talking, but they were too far away for me to hear them.
"Alright," I plopped down at our lunch table with my lunch and looked at Vee and Drew sitting next to each other across from me. "What happened with you two?"
Drew's face turned red and Vee smirked at him out of the corner of his eye. "Yeah, Drew," he said quietly, bringing his face close to Drew's cheek. "Why don't you tell her what happened, huh?"
Drew's face turned even redder and he stuttered. "Well. . .uh. . .um. . . We may have. . .umm. . ."
Vee rolled his eyes. "Fine. I'll give you a watered-down demonstration." He grabbed Drew's face and kissed him on the cheek. Drew's face went even redder and he and Vee stared at me.
"Uh. . . Summer, are you okay?" Drew asked after a couple seconds. "Your face is really. . . flushed."
I sat there for a second before squealing, "YEEAAAAASSSS!!!" Both of them looked mildly surprised. "It's about time you two finally started dating! Do you know how painful it was to watch you two flirt and not be able to tell you that the other likes you back??" I said.
"Please don't say it too loud," Drew said. "I don't want to come out to the whole school yet."
"You came out to me just fine."
"Well, you're my friend, that's easier than coming out to Seth." Drew fidgeted with his jacket sleeve. Vee rolled his eyes at him.
"You think coming out is hard?" He said. "My parents are homophobes. How am I gonna tell them?"
"You don't really have to," I said. "I mean, if you don't want them to know then you don't have to tell them."
"But they are going to get suspicious about why I spend so much time at his house," Vee gestured to Drew. "And believe me, it's hard to keep a secret in my family. Besides, if something, ah, serious happened between us," he added, obviously hinting, "they'd find out like that." Drew's face reddened a little at Vee's hint.
"How would they know if that happened?" He asked.
"There are many easy ways to tell if. . . Someone like me has done that." Vee said. "I'd look, act, and think differently."
"You didn't mention anything about that last night," Drew said to him.
"That's because you didn't ask."
"Wait, hold on," I smirked. "'Last night'?"
Drew's face turned red again. "It wasn't like that," he muttered. Vee laughed at how red his face was.
"It really wasn't," Vee laughed. "I accidentally fell asleep."
"Mmhmm, sure," I rolled my eyes. "Fine. You two aren't going to be all lovey when you're together now, are you?"
Vee chuckled. "Don't worry, we won't embarrass you or ourselves."
"Thank God," I sighed, and the three of us laughed.
