It had been several days since Hoseok had downloaded his new favorite computer game and he was rapidly climbing to the top of the leaderboards. There were only two people ahead of him. Their usernames were 'TheSandman' and 'TheProphet'.
The users were pretty similar, so Hoseok figured that they were two friends who were playing the game together or against one another.
Either way, their scores were incredibly high, hundreds of thousands of points ahead of everyone else on the leaderboard. TheProphet's score was slightly higher than TheSandman's.
Hoseok had just finished yet another mission, earning a new achievement for managing to get twenty headshots in just the span of six days of playing the game. It surely helped that the game was now giving him multiple assignments a day instead of just one like the very first day.
Once he had finished his second and final assignment for the day, he grabbed his cell phone. Scrolling through social media, he sees an article that his school shared on their page.
'THREE STUDENTS MURDERED AFTER SCHOOL SOCCER GAME
Choi Hyerin, 17, Lee Mina, 17, and Kim Sumin, 16, were leaving a soccer game between two local high schools when they were brutally murdered.
Each girl was shot fatally in the head, most likely from a long distance.
There are no leads on this case as of right now, but investigators are doing their best. They suspect that the deaths were caused by the same person who murdered Lee Sujin and several other young adults in the same fashion.
Whoever is carrying out these heinous crimes is very dangerous and sneaky.
The police asks that everyone please be careful."
Hoseok's mouth was ajar as he read the article. "Holy shit..." he breathed out, unable to comprehend that this was happening. "They can't be talking about Mina from my chemistry class."
As he scrolled through the article there was an image of the three girls. It had been posted on social media before the game and murders.
It was, in fact, Mina from his chemistry class.
"You've got to be kidding me." He shook his head, his eyes welling with tears.
The girl had always been so kind to him and they partnered up frequently for projects and assignments. He was quite fond of her and they had become good friends, so this was a huge shock to him.
"Who would want to kill her?" He ran his hands though his hair stressfully. "Is this really happening?"
He quickly exited the article, going to his contacts and calling Yoongi.
The phone rang several times.
"Please pick up," he mumbled as the phone continued to ring.
His voicemail finally picked up.
"Leave a message after–"
"Yoongi, please answer," he begged desperately. "I need you right now. Something happened and I'm not okay. Please call me back."
He hung up the phone, sighing before going to his contacts. He clicked on the contact for 'Lee Mina,' looking at the contact photo. He smiled sadly.
It was a photo of her in safety goggles, a huge smile plastered on her face.
Hesitantly, he clicked on the icon to call her.
Her voicemail picked up and he broke down at the sound of her voice.
For the next two hours, he called her phone. Sometimes he just wanted to hear her voice. Sometimes he just cried and left her messages that she would never be able to listen to.
"Why?!" Hoseok wailed, hot tears spilling down his cheeks. "Why, why, why..."
He was still sobbing when his mother arrived home from work a few hours later.
Hearing her son's heart-wrenching cries, she entered his room. He was sitting on his floor, head in his hands.
"My baby," she cooed, sitting down beside him and pulling him into her arms.
She didn't ask what had happened, as she had seen the girl's name on the news in the unfortunate article.
"Why did this happen?" He croaked our, his head on her shoulder.
"I... I don't know, Hobi.." She trailed off, stroking his hair. "I don't know."
