Days had passed and we were reaching our target. But out of nowhere Kahoda mentions something I completely forgot in the heat of the moment.
Kahoda: Ummm, Draven?
Draven: Yea?
Kahoda: What about Elonshe?
Shit. I completely forgot about her, my stupid ass was so caught up in the moment that I forgot the reason we are at war. Well, I guess I can't abort, but can change the target. She is probably at the capital so flattening it would not be smart if I want her back alive.
Draven: Change of plans. We will have to find another target.
Kahoda: You seriously forgot about her, didn't you.
Draven: Maybe, look, I got caught up in the heat of all of it.
I open up the crude map of the kingdom and look at other potential targets, there are plenty, but the second largest city will be a smart idea. It is a little ways away but it can be reached.
Draven: Alright, new target. Turn to 10 o'clock.
Kahoda: Alright boss.
We make s slight turn and head towards a large city that I was told is a massive agricultural and industrial power. At the same time, many magical prodigies live there so strike at their core, their source of power. As the day passes we approach, I look through the bombers sight, and slightly away there it is, large enough to be seen from all the way up here. My hand on the release trigger, all sorts of thoughts race through my mind. All I can do is hope that Elonshe is not in this city, because I couldn't bear the fact that I murdered someone I cared about. Kahoda makes a turn to head back and as I let go of the payload and see it drop I pull to the right hard. The silent night illuminated by a full moon. As we try our best to get away as much as possible, pushing our engines into the maximum of their capabilities. I put on goggles so that I don't go blind. There is a moment of nothingness, the bomb still slowly falling, there is regret, I don't like killing civilians but I am not risking my own people and this is a display of absolute power. It might sway the war into our favor and maybe towards a premature surrender. Then, the night turns to day, the whole valley, night sky, the mountains themselves turn to white. In the rearview mirror I see it, a massive ball of bright light, the sun had been released here on the surface. I can see the shockwave pushing the clouds outwards, preparing myself for it. I can see it approaching, the mushroom cloud rising high up above, a spectacle to behold. And then, it comes, it shakes the whole plane, it is a strain to control the damn thing to keep it in flight actually. I grip the stick hard, trying to keep her from falling from the sky, the creaking and crackling of airframe is making me a little frightened but after what felt like an eternity it calms down. I let out a sigh of relief, wiping off the sweat off of my forehead. I look back, the cloud rising up miles into the sky, a chill is sent down my spine. To think humans have many of these back on Earth, god help everyone that they aren't used. The normal clouds are completely gone, evaporated into nothingness or pushed away and the ground, it is just a sea of greyness. Everything had been scorched and turned into dust. I hope this is enough to cause the whole nation to either rebel or for the kingdom to sign a peace agreement, otherwise, more will die. We start a slow and gradual decent, will rally with out troops on the future plan. May the Gods have mercy on me, if any are left after I am done with them.
Unknown POV
A large bright light had been reported from the direction of the city Anayesera, reported by the far away villages. They also reported a terrible earthquake and watched as the clouds were pushed away by something. All of this did not bode well and the closer we got to the city more and more evidence that something terrible happened emerged. We finally passed through the mountain passage and into our view came the city of Anayesera. Well, it would have normally, but to our horror, there was nothing. A crater as big as the capital itself, everything had been destroyed, the trees either burns to ash or some remained, scorched to the core. The rock itself turned into dust. Horror filled out souls as each soldier could remember the bustling city that stood here, but now, it is only in our memories. But as we started to approach one of the high mages stopped the convoy.
???: What is the mater?
Mage: There is danger in the air here. One that is both unknown and unseen before. I would not advise advancing Sir Cailu.
Cailu: Do you know what happened here?
Mage: I could not tell. This sort of residue left in the air, the pure size of the crater and the scorching that is all around us, it worries me that this is some sort of new power.
Soldier: Sir, please take a look at this.
I got off my horse and walked to the soldier, who is pointing at the ground. It was a patch of land that had not been fully scorched, it looked like a figure of a person, but from a extreme angle. Is this the only thing that we will ever of the residents, mere shadows of their past existence. Could this be the work of the Kingdom of Prussia that we are at war against? But what kind of magic do they posses that could cause this kind of damage? And to cause the deaths of so many civilians that had nothing to do with this war. A stupid war, all because the damn King and the Prince would not give away that damn elven woman back to the king of this Prussia that I never heard of. I had not liked them from the start, the king is arrogant and so is his son, like father like son. All they care are women, the Queen is a good woman, but completely pushed to the side, only showing up when necessary. Maybe this war will be a turning point in our country, I don't care if we fall under rule of this Prussia, but something has to change.
Cailu: Men, we are heading back to the capital. There is nothing we can do here, if the mage said that we can't go in, then we can't go in.
.
.
However, upon our return we reported what we had to report and the King did not take this well. He threw a fit, even killing a few poor slaves in the process. Not only has our kingdom lost people but Anayesara was an important city, most of the weapons and produce came from that province alone. There were three magic academies there alone and with the loss of those, we have been struck hard, loosing valuable resources. But that is not the bad news he heard, the forces of this Prussia, well, we have had an encounter with them on the sea. And from a fleet of 50 ships we sent, only three returned, two of them heavily damaged. It was a massacre as was reported by one captain. It was pathetic, they appeared to have been engaging them from a safe distance, damaging their ships with some sort of magic that they never saw before. There was an explosion out of the ships side that puffed out a lot of smoke and our ships were decimated, torn to pieces. One captain managed to keep one of the things that was causing them a lot of damage. It was a ball, a simple solid iron ball. It had been damaged when it impacted but it's shape is still clear as day. It was heavy and appeared to have been slightly burnt on one side. All of this worried our pathetic king and the Prussian soldiers landed on our soil. They are quick and organized as our spies managed to report. None of them wear metal armor, but cloth uniforms that could be presented at a parade, they appeared to have been carrying long sticks and towed with them some strange looking tube on wheels. And to my demise, I was ordered to go and 'greet' our guests. With an army of ten thousand we marched towards the fated battleground, an unease weighing down on me. Upon reaching this field where we were expected to intercept them, they had already constructed a temporary base. Set up tents and small fortifications. And soon, the two armies lined up, their formation is strange, they had no cavalry, instead, the hid behind these short walls, in between each was that strange construct. As is tradition I rode out alone and stood at the middle of the two armies. Soon a figure from the other rides up.
Upon seeing this being, I was consumed by fear. He was no man, but a demon, the piercing white eyes that swim in sea of dark, tall and built, wearing a rather exquisite uniform. My hands trembled, I was not expecting that, he gave me a smile, only a devil could make me feel this amount of fear. What have we made our enemy.
Draven: You wish to talk to me I suppose?
Cailu: Yes. My name is Cailu, one of the main generals of the king.
Draven: Nice to meet you Cailu, my name's Draven. And I am but a king.
I was shocked that I got to speak with the king himself, he doesn't appear to be like ours, hiding behind, gorging himself on drink and food while innocents die and suffer.
Draven: Look, I will be frank with you. There is no need for blood, you and your men can surrender now and live to see tomorrow and your families. All I wish is for the woman I care about to be returned to me.
Such a simple and merciful man, offering us salvation if we surrender, but my duty binds me to this accursed country.
Cailu: I will convey this message to my troops, those that break away from our formation, will you let them through?
Draven: I promise that they won't be harmed.
I nod and with that ride back to my men. I gather them, yelling out so that everyone can hear me.
Cailu: Men, you can, if you wish, surrender and you won't be harmed in any way. You can live to see your families. Feel free to head out to them if you wish, I will not judge you. He guarantees your safety.
There is a silence but soon some men break away from the formation and head out. I can see the rest already branding them as traitors but those that surrendered are wiser than half of us. As those that surrendered disappear from our view we prepare for the charge.
Cailu: Men, brave and bold, we face an enemy that threatens our land. Let us show them what we are capable of, for the King, for the Queen, for our land and our families. Charge!
With a roar all of us charge, the other side, not. This does shock me but nevertheless, we charge on forwards. And then, clouds of white smoke appear from them and whistling and whirling can be heard in the air before my men are cut down like animals by something. It breaks the ground, killing ten men in line. Then, the line of their soldiers fires the same effect and our entire armies front row falls. Sadly, my horse is hit, causing it to fall on top of me. Stunned I look around, seeing my men die, torn to pieces, their empty eyes look at me, blood splatters all over me. The sound of bangs and explosions followed by whistling plants seeds of dread in me. The moral of our men is quickly broken, I don't blame them. What have we angered? Who do we fight against? The horses are scared and run away, knocking down soldiers and trampling them. All I can watch is the enemy marching towards us slowly, they just fire and fire, raining thunder on my soldiers as they try to run away. Some stay, but are killed quickly. In these last moments I look up at the sky, rain starts to fall, is this the way I will die. The pain of the horse on me is drowned out by the sadness and tears that ensue. I grab the crest on my armor, the badge of my rank and rip it off, throwing it on the mud next to me. The enemy soldiers march past and the last thing I see is him, smiling down on me before saying something, but it was muffled as I feel myself loosing consciousness. And then, darkness.
