Chapter 2: Haven

You screamed out, holding on tight as Igneel plummeted to the ground. You'd been flying for hours now, and it was a wonder your older brother had gotten this far.
Even if he was eight years older than you and in the prime of his life, he still lacked the impressive stamina of your father. You watched in horror as the ground came rushing up to you, shutting you eyes as you prepared to die.
Suddenly the falling stopped. You opened your eyes slowly to see Igneel was gliding along now. However his head was still limp, which meant he was still passed out. Looking up you saw your father above you, holding Igneel up by his shoulders.
"Why didn't you transform?" Acnologias low, growling voice was intimidating on its own. But it was even worse as a dragon. It was down right terrifying to hear. "I-Uh-umm..." You worried about what he'd say when you answered. But you knew it would be worse to not answer him too.
"I still can't fly in my dragon form dad. I still have trouble keeping myself steady when I'm gliding, so I was too scared to try flying all on my own." You looked down, expecting a scolding. You were surprised when Acnologia merely grumbled for a moment, then replied calmly.
"I guess that's to be expected. Your only seven, and your mother was sick for many months already son. She never could teach you how to fly proper." His voice trailed off at the end, and you could tell he still felt the pain of your mother's passing.
His head hung a little lower now, and his shoulders lowered despite still needing to bear the weight of Igneel and yourself. You looked away from him. "So are we going to live here now? It would be easier than going back every day." You said, worried more for Igneel than you were anything else.
"Yes. When I came here the second time I ventured into the wall. There are creatures there that look as we do when we are not dragons. We will blend in there. But for today we will spend the night outside the walls. Your brother clearly needs the rest."

After a few more hours you'd managed to find a forest to hide in. Currently you were helping Igneel eat the parts of the creatures Acnologia brought back. Acnologia was still out hunting, and Igneel could barely sit up, let alone eat.
"Eat up big brother. There's plenty for us here." Igneel smiled softly. Ruffling your hair he slowly took the half eaten arm from you. It came off a two meter Titan. So even someone as small as you could hold it without a problem.
"You go ahead and eat too Y/N. I can feed myself for a little while." You nodded, walking over to the pile of body parts, tearing into a leg like a starved animal. Which of course you both were, given the conditions of this winter. They'd been worse than usual. Most of the dragons that had gone into the winter alive were gone now. Torn apart by each other for food, or starved to death.
Despite such a gruesome thing being well known to you, you didn't care. That's how dragons lived. That's how it needed to be. Perhaps the humans would be similar? Maybe they were weak? Was that why they had the walls? Whatever the case. You'd find out tomorrow.
