Chapter 12
Nights passed by and the sun came and went again. A cycle established itself as his wolf left each morning to do her things and Ant accommodated to her needs and a new routine.
It turned out that his white beauty was not a morning person. If woken anytime before seven in the morning she would be grumpy throughout the day.
They went through a months worth of provisions in half the time and Anton guessed Ida's daily runs were the reason for her high intake. He didn't mind though. Since her first kill in front of him, she'd felled a second caribou which now lived in his freezer chest outside.
As long as she was healthy and fit Anton was not complaining.
He had gone on a drive with his snowmobile when Ida was out on a run the day before and made some shots. His notebook was on the kitchen counter and transferring the files when Ida came in with a rush of cold air.
Not looking up he mumbled passed his hand where his head rested on, concentration still on the screen. "Make sure you close the door, love. The house doesn't heat itself."
A low rumble of annoyance escaped her lips. That was only one time!
Their silent communication was beyond Anton's comprehension. It was weird to not hear her actual voice, but he didn't need a dictionary to be able to translate her wolf language into his own words.
"I'm going out tonight, to get shots of the full moon rising, love. I have to leave in an hour to reach the mountain peak in time. Would you care to come with?" On the last question he looked up at the wolf in his living room. For an unknown reason she seemed frozen in her spot. Her legs were stiff and her eyes never left his face. Insecurity shone bright in her azure depths as she contemplated his offer.
A tentative nod unfroze her as she rounded the counter to place her large head in his lap.
Her soft purr vibrated through his leg and he found it hard to concentrate on his work when she was so close. The hand that had supported his head before lowered to her ear where it began to scratch. Ida's ear twitched and she leaned into the touch, welcoming the affectionate gesture.
Ant finished his work in record time, editing the magnificent shots of the stag in the state forest. Ant hadn't seen the creature in a while as the massive buck usually grazed on his meadow in the summer, staying in the national park throughout the winter.
To his surprise and joy, the stag had come higher up the mountain this year and allowed Anton to capture his grace and strength in some of his best shots yet. They would bring him a small fortune once his agent sold them down in New York.
Saving the pictures he shut the device down and jumped off the bar stool. Ida whined at the loss of contact and sulked like a puppy when he reached for his coat. "C'mon! Or do you wanna stay here while I have fun on the mountain?"
Ida was quick to jump up and sprint out into the cold.
Grabbing his keys, Ant locked up and got his snowmobile out again. He had filled it up when he came back the other day and the engine roared to life without any resistance.
His wolf was waiting impatiently outside the shed. Her energy had no boundaries and she sprinted ahead.
The vehicle was fun to drive and the spotlight illuminated the way easily. Ida's shadow bounded over the tree trunks and low hanging pine branches as they made their way ever higher onto the peak.
The snow was easy to navigate in the dimming light and in under an hour it was pitch black. Ant knew it would be the first night to see the Aurora Borealis and coupled with a full moon nonetheless. It would be spectacular.
When the final sector of the journey was completed, Ida's tongue was lolling out of her mouth in satisfied exhaustion. Yet, her eyes held a tinge of shame and guilt for reasons Anton did not know.
"Tell me, love. What bothers you?" He couldn't stand her distance anymore. He wanted to know what was going on that made her uncomfortable.
Her eyes looked away and out into the darkness. The light source had been turned off to save the battery life, but the star filled night sky provided enough illumination to see her silhouette move.
"Please" Ant begged her to look at him.
When she finally did her eyes only told him the bare minimum. "You'll see, soon enough." They said.
In the distance over the valley, the sky's horizon became brighter as they watched in silence.
Anton had a video camera set up to film as well as his expensive camera to take the long shot in high quality. His focus was solely on the rising moon. Over the dark valley, the moon lit up the frozen ice on the river that snaked through the mountains. It was a silver path that looked to lead right into the moon.
Ida had sat down next to him awhile ago and watched him work. Now though she began to fidget. Her tail moved nervously from one side then to the other, curling around her paws.
Later Anton realised that the moon was too much temptation for her. Now though he just looked up from the lenses as her form suddenly blocked his shot.
Surprised at her movement he stood straight to observe the beautiful wolf take a deep breath right at the top of the mountain.
Then the loudest howl he had ever heard burst through her vocal chords. Ida used all her energy as she sang to the moon. Her body vibrated, but was as stiff and straight as the towering pine trees clinging to the mountain.
And as Anton watched, captivated by her song, the moon seemed to brighten. The valley was bathed in silver light that outshined the stars. The frozen icicles on a nearby tree projected rainbows onto the clear untouched snow at Ida's paws. And her fur looked as if it caught the moon shimmer. Tiny blue lights reflected from the white hairs, betraying the true nature of the moon's blue light.
As the moon rose completely above the line of land, so did Ida's body. Still howling she pushed onto her hind legs. Her ears were pressed back and her eyes shut tightly. Then her claws turned into toes. Under her fur, the muscles thickened from bone and sinew into strong calves. Her thighs grew shapely and curved, her tail disappearing into rounded buttocks. Her spine silently straightened into an erect posture and the hairs at her neck lengthened, drawing all the hairs on her body into their thickness until her skin was naked and unprotected.
Lastly her soft ears formed slightly pointed shells, her nose shortened and became more human. Her forelegs were now long slender arms and as her howl receded back into her chest with a new breath her eyes opened again.
Gaping at the beautiful woman, that had once been a wolf, Anton was lost for words. He had never expected her to change. To even be able to. He knew their connection was supernatural and not heard of. Knew that werewolves didn't exist.
The woman, Ida, his chosen, turned around. Only then did he notice the gooseflesh on her white skin. Without thinking first he launched at her while taking his thick parka off. As he flung it around her shoulders she wasn't quick enough to step back in time and instead flinched against the jacket he still held firmly in his hands.
Disappointment stung his heart at seeing her flinch. Did she not like him anymore? What happened, what made her become human?
A soft hand touched his left cheek. He looked up into the familiar pools of rich blue. They hadn't changed just like her hair. Her eyes were still expressing her emotions and thoughts, which gave him hope.
A smile flew over her white lips in the moon light before her lyrical voice welcomed him home.
"I'll explain everything to you Anton. I promise." Her voice was as soft and gentle as he had imagined the whole time. Yet it was even better to hear it for real this time.
"Whatever it is love, as long as you'll stay by me nothing will change how much I love you already." Ant was pleased to see pink stains taint her cheekbones. "Let's get you home first though please."
Worrying she'd catch a cold he drew her closer to his body and quickly packed his gear. He fired up the engine in no time and pressed Ida close to his chest. Her arms wrapped around his chest and her cold nose pressed into his neck. Exhaustion must have caught up to her since even through big shivers, her eyes closed and she fell asleep in his arms as they returned to their warm home.
