"Mum, where's Dad?" I asked for the twentieth time in the past one hour.
Mom looked at me with a smirk. "Sweetheart, patience is one thing that a doctor specialises in, no matter what the genre."
I glare at her playfully. "Don't you have any surgeries tomorrow?" She asked.
"Nope," I said, switching my phone on for the fifth time to see still no texts, "It's Saturday tomorrow."
"And... Abeer is returning," Mom said. I couldn't stop the smile on my face that came just with his name.
Abeer was returning from London today again, after one whole year. It's been two years since Abeer, Aarav, and Ruhaana left for London again. Abeer and Aarav to handle their father's companies in London, and Ruhaana to pursue her photography career.
Yes, Ruhaana left medicine three years ago. It was a tough decision, to leave medicine in its last year and persue her career in her passion, photography. She was getting frustrated by all the studies and the pressure till a point that she fell very sick with all the stress and it became very toxic to her.
She left medicine and went to Paris for starting photography from the scratch and then to London last year to photograph for a live show.
Lucky for her, she and Aarav were staying together. Yes. Aarav stood like an iron man in front of her, supporting her in every aspect possible and I was so proud of my twin for that. And also, then they claim that they're not dating. Just best friends. As if.
And today, Abeer was coming back. Just for a week though, he was coming back to handle two meetings and take a small vacation with me. FaceTiming every day and chatting all day long worked through the years for us, but whatever they say, it wasn't as good as being with him all the time.
For two years, we somehow managed to make time for each other, he flied for my graduation, I went for his birthday, he flied back to celebrate Valentine's Day with me and I went when he cracked his first big deal. But ultimately, distance played its toll on our relationship. Since he visited India last year, I have barely seen him. We speak once a week via the phone, and I must've FaceTimed him twice in total. I was busy starting a career as a neurosurgeon while he was expanding his Dad's business.
It was his birthday tomorrow. And since Dad had flied to London for a meeting anyway, Abeer was returning back with Dad.
"Are you going to eat your dinner, or be lost in thoughts of your boyfriend?" Mom raised her eyebrows as I stuffed the last bite of rice in my mouth and she called for the bill.
"You're my mom, you're supposed to be asking me to concentrate on my studies, not teasing me with my boyfriend," I teased as she kept her card into the bill.
Another thing that changed in the past years as my friends and I became busier in our own lives, is that my mom became my ultimate best friend. Whatever happened, she was the first person I went to.
"You're twenty six and a neurosurgeon, you can make your life decisions well. I trust you, I trust Abeer, you both would probably get married soon as well. Why do I bother?" She shrugged as we got up. I nodded in disbelief.
Marriage. Don't get me started on it. I could probably rant on what happened for--
"The latest news says that Manik Malhotra's private jet, which was supposed to be landing on Mumbai T2 Terminus any moment, was delayed due to a bad weather by an hour and has been taken off the radar a few minutes ago..." the news played on the television, catching my and Mom's attention.
My panicked face met Mom's as the news went on. "The two people travelling were retired rockstar and business tycoon Manik Malhotra, alone with his best friend band-mate Cabir Dhawan's son, also the heir of Dhawan Industries, Abeer Dhawan. It's been six minutes now since the flight went off the charts, and we have made no contact with the pilot or the duo yet."
"To keep yourself updated, keep watching E24..." someone muted the television. A lot of eyes in the restaurant turned towards us.
"Oh god!" I murmered, immediately panicked.
"Sweetheart, it's nothing. Don't stress. Let's go, c'mon," Mom dragged me out whilst my feet remained numb.
Dad and Abeer.
Where were they?
Oh my god.
Oh my god.
As I drove back home with Mom talking to Cabir uncle, my phone kept buzzing. First Krishh, then Ruhaana and Aarav, and then Kaira... everyone kept calling one by one. I couldn't pick up.
I knew I wouldn't say anything if I did pick up, except possibly breaking down.
God, I hope they're safe.
Please be safe.

I stood by the window, as midnight painted the city of London, stars twinkling and the beautiful city shining with lights like it never slept. I couldn't stop staring, even when it was 3 A.M. In two hours, I had to leave for the airport. And I couldn't sleep the entire night. The results of my exam would be up next week, which meant a new career, new job, and a new life. Abeer was going to step into his Dad's show after his training for two years.
We were going to lead busy lives. And I wouldn't be able to see him for atleast a year from now.
"What's wrong, baby?" I heard him murmur in his sleepy voice as his hands wrapped around my waist and he kept his head on my shoulder, hugging me from behind. I leaned backwards and he straightened.
"I have to go in an hour or two," I said in a low voice.
"Then don't," He murmered And I turned behind to face him, smiling. His hair were a mess, he hasn't worn any shit and he was so sleepy, barely managing to keep his eyes open.
"I can't," I say, holding his face in my hand and he gently kissed my palm, "Results will be out next week. Life's going to change for us."
"I know," He murmered back, "And you'll do good, I'm sure. You'll make me proud."
"I will," I giggle, "But right now, you should catch on some sleep. You have a meeting really early, which mind it, is just four hours away."
He made a crying face as I dragged him in and pushed him on the bed, putting on the blanket above him.
"You'd be gone when I woke up," He whined. I couldn't help but smile as I kissed his forehead, "I'll see you soon."
"I don't want you to go," He barely whispered, already slipping into a half-conscious state.
"I have to. My home's back there," I tried reasoning.
"This is Home," He whined.
"Yes," I laughed, "Your Home. But your parents and mine and my home, they're al back in India."
"Not fair," He whined, "I hate it when you go back."
"I know," I said, "I hate it too. Life's a little unfair that way."
"But you wouldn't have to go if you come here to stay with me," He complaint.
"We've has a conversation about this. My medical exams are just valid in India, and I can't study all over again and give an exam for just spending a few years here." I reminded him, running my hand in his hair.
"Why few years? Don't go ever," he said.
I laughed, "You wish."
"I do," he said, his warm hands tucking on my cold ones. "Myra Malhotra, Marry me."
My breath hitched in my throat, hearing what I hadn't expected.
"Whenever you're ready," He murmered, "I'd wait. It's an open question. Whenever you're ready, I'm asking you to marry me, Myra Malhotra."
I left after that for Mumbai. And we never had a conversation about it again.
And the irony being, that was the last proper conversation we had. It's been a year.
And I wish I could hold you again. I just wish I would have told you how much I love you that night. Atleast better than sitting helplessly on the couch waiting for you to return home when there's no news about you. At all.
Kaira placed a hand on my shoulder and one tear drop slipped off as old memories came running back.
Navya Aunty was at her Mom's place, and it was Cabir Uncle's idea to not tell her or worry her unnecessary. Aliya Aunty and Dhruv Uncle were in Paris, where Aliya Aunty did a course in fashion designing after their band retired.
Ishaan and Nisha were in Spain. Well, that's a story of another time.
Krishh paced around talking to the airport for further updates while I and Kaira sat on the couch, she trying to persuade me. Mom and Mukti Aunty were in another corner, and Cabir Uncle on the phone. Zubin Uncle was at the airport, enquiringly directly. Mom was trying to smile and keep her calm for me, but right now, even that was faltering.
It had been a few hours. The clock was nearly striking one A.M.
And there was no news.
The last report said that the flight had reportedly crashed a little around the Arabian shore. And no news after that.
My head spinned, as I put it behind on the couch, and squeezed my eyes tight. Nothing made sense.
"Sir, an unidentified car is on the gateway, and its nearly 2 A.M. Should we turn them away?" The security guard came in, unaware of what was going on.
"No!" We all said almost at the same time.
He nodded, leaving. We all exchanged glances as I got up from the couch and Mom and Cabir Uncle rushed ahead to check what was going on, when the door bells rang.
The doors were opened and there he stood.
Abeer.
Oh my god.
I left a breath I didn't know I was holding.
"Oh my god," I said in happiness as Cabir Ucle hugged him and then Mukti Aunty and then my mom. "Where's Manik?" Someone asked.
Where's Dad?
"I drove him to the hospital and came here to inform you all. We lost our phones in the emergency landing along with everything else." Abeer sighed and that's when I noticed what I had to. Abeer's forehead was cut and there were blood stains on his head and his right arm was held by a plaster. Not a fracture, but something like a ligament tear.
"Manik? What happened to him?" Mom panicked. My breath got stuck again. Dad was in the hospital?
"It's nothing," Abeer dismissed, "Just a cut on his right arm, that might require medical attention, maybe even a stitch. We couldn't reach you guys, so I drove here."
"I'll go," Mom said immediately, "Myra..." she looked at me and her voice trailed.
"Mom, I'm old enough. I can be alone. Go ahead," I said. Mom nodded, and I looked back at Abeer.
"Dad, can I stay here for the night if you don't mind?" Abeer said, his eyes not leaving mine. Cabir Uncle nodded and the elders drove off.
Abeer walked towards me and I to him like the most perfect movie moment, the only difference being that it was taking everything in me to not burst out crying.
"We'd leave to," Krishh said, nudging Kaira, "I'll drop you." They nodded, giving me a hug and then Abeer and then leaving. There was something wrong with the two. They were so cute, I just hoped everything was fine. Mental note to talk to Kaira later.
"Abeer," I said, mostly to myself and then my voice broken. I kept my hand on his face, my thumb gently tracing the scars and he hissed as the doctor inside me rose. "This..." I collected myself, "It needs to be sanitised and taped, and your arm... I have a plaster you could use instead of tying this with a band..." I murmured, leaving to get the first aid box when his arm held mine and he pulled me to his chest, wrapping his arms around me.
"It's okay," He whispered as I cried in his arms. Ironically, he was the one who was hurt and I was the one crying.
"Why did you do this?" I sobbed, "I was so scared."
"I was scared too," he said as he broke he hug and held my face in his hand, "When the pilot informed us about the engine failure and we prepared for that crazy emergency landing on a shore, and it all went wrong and crazy, the only person in my mind was you. I prayed to anyone who listened to not kill me, so that just once, just once I could hold you once again and tell you how much I've missed you and I love you."
I bit back a sob. This was the first time he's ever told me he loves me. Our relationship wasn't based on I-love-you's, and so we've never said that out loud. It was all about being there for each other, and trusting each other and all of those little actions that speak love more louder than words do.
"I just wished, that God listens to me once, just so that I can live to tell you how much I love you," he held me close and then I cried again.
"I... love... you... too," I whispered, wiping my tears off, and bringing in the smile when my eyes fell on the clock. It was 2 A.M.
"It's past midnight," I smiled.
"So?" He said, confused.
"Happy Birthday, Abeer," I said, tip toeing to keep my lips on his and he held me close by my waist until there were no spaces left between us, and until he was sure I was there in front of him and I was sure that he was safe, he kissed me under the moonlight. I wanted air to breathe but even its absence was okay as long as I had him standing near me.
He was fine.
"The best birthday gift ever," he murmured breaking away and I gasped for air as he did.
"That's not even the birthday gift," I said, a small smile playing on my lips as I went inside and he followed me to my room.
"If it's a bandage for my wounds or some doctor thing, Myra, I swear..." his voice trailed when I kept my finger on his lips and gave him a box.
He opened it, giving me a sheepish smile, and saw what was inside. "A pen?" He said in surprise.
"Well, I debated on buying you the most expensive things in this world but I was sure they wouldn't make you happy. If they did, you would have bought it on your own already. So, I wanted to give you something meaningful. Everytime you sign something new, you'd find me with you," I say, drawing doodles on his chest.
"Okay, thank you," He smiled, kissing my forehead.
"But that's not it," I whined, "It's personalised, read the name on the top."
He huffed, reading it aloud, "From Myra."
"You know what babe, you wrote the name of the people who you give it to, not your own nam--....." his voice disappeared as he re-read the name. The smile vanished from his face and I could feel him speechless just like he always leaves me.
"From Myra Abeer Dhawan?" He read, more like a question, as if not believing what he just read.
"Myra--...." he hesitated. I raised my eyebrows, smiling.
"That's your birthday gift, Mr. Dhawan. It's a yes. I'm gifting myself to you, you rather keep me safe," I teased and a smile spread on his lips, wider than I have ever seen him smiling and all the tiredness in his eyes was replaced by the twinkling shine.
"I'd keep you as safe as the most precious thing in this universe, because for me, you are," he smiled, his breath mingling with mine.
"I love you, to-be- Mrs. Dhawan," He murmured before kissing me again, until his name was all I could remember.
To be Mrs. Dhawan.
I did like the sound of that.
