Chapter Nine: The child

Y/N and I continued our journey the following morning and left the abandoned train station filled with loot, I will admit it was quite strange that someone would just leave all that gold abandoned. It is possible someone was living there since that one cart was extremely clean. There's a possibility someone was living there and we just robbed them, now I felt kind of bad. Doesn't really matter we're long gone now.
Y/N had gone out for a bit but as soon as she came back, I was ready to go.
We were now walking down a long dirt road, what seemed to be an old road to someone's home.

Silence throbbed through the air, Y/N was always looking at the trees when she didn't want to talk.
I had grown used to it, I just guessed she was keeping an eye out for any bandits so we don't get into any more trouble, whenever we let our guard down we seem to run into trouble, which is basically all the time.

"Y/N please talk to me."

Her gaze met mine and she simply smiled.

"About what?"
She had her sweet and calm voice, which she only used when she met someone new.

Somethings wrong.
I thought to myself.

"Never mind," I replied.

My eyes darted everywhere, looking for anything out of the ordinary.

"Is there someone there?"
I quietly whispered.

"Yes, stay quiet," She quietly replied.

Whoever this person was, they were obviously very good at keeping themselves hidden. I couldn't even pick up on their presence, but Y/N easily did.
I heard leaves rustling and I knew someone was following at that moment.

"Get behind me!"
Y/N shouted.

I didn't listen and took out my sword, Y/N doing the same.
A little girl came into view.
I stood there shocked, almost jaw dropped.
Dirt was smeared across her face and clothes. She wore old and ragged clothing.
Her black hair was cut very short, making her almost look like a boy. The little girl's eyes were a light sky blue, staring in fear at us.

"Are you lost?" Y/N asked her.

The little girl didn't reply, and cowered behind one of the trees only sticking out her head.

"I promise I won't hurt you. Please come out."

Y/N and I put our swords away, waiting patiently as the little girl took small steps towards us.

"Can you tell us your name?" Y/N asked.

"Sarah," She replied quietly, barely loud enough for us to hear.

"Are you lost Sarah?" I asked.

"I think so, Mommy and Daddy won't wake up," She replied.

I looked to Y/N and noticed she bit her bottom lip out of nervousness.

"It's okay, we'll take care of you." Y/N told her, trying to force a smile.

"What about mommy and daddy?"

"They're in a better place, and won't be waking up any time soon," Y/N replied.

She's so young

I was glad Y/N didn't tell Sarah they were dead, otherwise many tears would have been shed.

"Are you hungry?" I asked Sarah.

"Very,"

Y/N pulled out some bread and an apple.

"Here," Y/N handed her the food and Sarah ate as fast as she could.

I wanted to say don't choke, but I know that wasn't the most appropriate thing to say to a little girl who just lost her parents.

"Slow down." I told her, saying it in a more appropriate way.

Sarah did as told, but she quickly finished the apple and moved onto the bread.

"Do you have anymore?" Sarah asked.

"I sadly don't, but there should be a town just a few miles from here where we can get you some food, clothing, and a place for us to stay. Can you walk a few miles?"

I stayed silent as Y/N did the talking.
I loved how gentle she was with children, always wanting to help them.

Is Sarah our's now? I thought to myself.

I snapped back to the present and saw Sarah nodding her head to reply to Y/N.
We started walking, knowing by sunset we will have reached the next town.

I walked into Y/N's room and found her sitting on her bed, her face in her hands.
She looked up when she saw me, surprised.
We had made it to the next town by sunset, and found an Inn where we could get food and a place to stay.
I luckily found a woman who could make a dress for Sarah, she would have it for me in the next three days so we were stuck here but I didn't mind. It gave us the chance to relax, and to give Sarah time to adjust to us and get back to a healthy child.

"Do you need something?" Y/N asked me.

"I wanted to talk," I replied.

"About?"

"I thought we could get to know each other a bit, learn each other's stories,"

"Okay, should I start?" She asked.

"Sure,"

"Okay, what is your favorite color?"

I burst out laughing and wiped a tear from my eye.

"Really?"

She laughed.

"Well what else am I supposed to ask?"

"I'll answer, my favorite color is blue, what about you?"

"It's F/C," She replied.

"Okay my turn, how old are you?" She asked.

"Nineteen, I'll be twenty shortly," I replied.

"I'm eighteen," She added.

"Okay I'll ask next, how did you appear out of nowhere?" Sam asked.

She bit her lip and sighed.

"It's a long story."

"I've got all night,"

She knew I wouldn't give up so she started explaining her story.

"My family had abandoned me when I was very young, I was taken in by an older man who had lost his wife and child. He raised me as his own, and he taught me how to fight. But as he got older, he could no longer teach me how to fight and he knew I was old enough to move on. He would be passing in a short period of time, so he was able to make a potion for me where I could teleport somewhere. I packed my bags and stayed with him until he died, otherwise I would've felt guilty leaving him to die alone and not have a proper barriel." She explained.

"I knew you were an incredible, independent, and caring woman, I didn't think you would've gone through all that and you're still going,"

She smiled weakly at me.

"Whats yours?"

It was my turn to be nervous.

"Well my mom died when I was about four, my father didn't take it too well so he would start getting angry and even start beating me. I had to hide my little sister, Baylee, to shield her innocence since she was only two at the time. But the beatings got worse, my father had always promised that by the time I was sixteen he would teach me how to fight, but he went back on his word. I only taught myself basic combat since I didn't have anyone to train with. By the time I was seventeen, I had gone out one day to find a job. When I returned, I found Baylee lying dead on the floor with a pool of blood around her, my father beside her with a knife. I went into a rage mode and tried fighting him, I failed and he's after me,"
I explained, thinking of the horrid memories.

I could tell Y/N was feeling sorrow for me by the look on her face.

"I'm sorry Sam,"
She said to me, hugging me and rubbing my back.

"It's not your fault,"

I interlaced my fingers with Y/N and moved closer beside her.
She smiled warmly at me and our eyes locked. My dark brown eyes staring into Y/N's.
Our faces were barely inches apart.
I brushed my hand through her hair and she only watched, not moving.

"Close your eyes," She whispered.

My eyelids flew shut, everything turning black.
I may not be able to see anything, but I could still feel.
A pair of soft lips touched mine, our lips moved in sync.
I pulled away, my eyes opening.
I looked at her awkwardly and only layed back on the bed, resting my head on the pillow.
She layed down beside me, putting enough space between us so we weren't that close.

"Goodnight Y/N,"

"Goodnight Mr Gladiator,"

"I love you,"

She looked over at me and stayed silent.
Her eyes met mine.

"I love you too,"

I was definitely taken by surprise but after her saying it, I felt better and knew she felt the same.

Maybe when we find a home we can settle down and raise Sarah,
I thought to myself.

I pulled Y/N close to me, it felt nice to be like this.
I kissed her head and layed down, smiling brightly and closing my eyes falling into the long black stare of sleep.
