Danger

One peaceful yet painful week had passed by since I was saved by Xavier.
Xavier.
The more time I spent with him the more I questioned his involvement with this line of business. He wasn't meant to be here. He was smart, charming and respectful with incredibly exquisite manners.
He personally put Leo in charge of my protection when he wasn't around. Although Leo wasn't too ecstatic about being my baby sitter, he still understood why Xavier personally assigned him to watch over me.
Never once did he complained about being stranded in this huge room with me whenever Xavier wasn't around. Leo was like Xavier and always tried to uplift my mood.
He had darker edge that Xavier didn't. However, he was kind to me and never once tried to hurt me. Even though I kept my distance, I didn't mind his presence.
I missed my family oh so dearly. I knew going back meant putting their lives in danger, that's why I never complained about being stuck here with Xavier. Nevertheless, I still had this unrealistic idea that somehow everything would go back to normal one day.
My father and mother were my biggest supporters and were over the moon when they found out that I was accepted at CU with full scholarship to study English Literature.
They did everything in their power to send me there. But now all their hopes and dreams were shattered into pieces. It was all because of me. I couldn't help but blame myself for getting into this situation.
If I would have never taken that alley way as a short cut, I probably would have been sitting in a lecture room right now.
It's been three days since Xavier left me but never failed to call the private cell he gave me before he left. He called once every hour to check if I was okay.
I didn't understand why he thought it was his responsibility to protect me or why he cared so much because there were other girls in that line who he could have picked but he didn't even look at them.
In an odd sadistic way, I was grateful he picked me. I shuddered at the thought of what would have happened to me if someone else had bought me. He said he'd be back by seven in the evening, so when the clock ticked eight, my anticipation level reached its peak causing an internal hyperventilation.
If he was hurt, I would be dead too... maybe even worse.
"Are you okay?" Leo questioned when he saw my small frame cower away in the middle of Xavier's bed while he paced around the room.
I nodded in response; immediately averting my eyes towards the silver clock that hung on the far left side of the room.
"He probably got held up in airport don't cry." He sympathised.
I hadn't realised that I was crying. I was scared. Scared of what that Capone guy would do to Xavier because he took me from him.
Call me selfish, I didn't want my safety blanket to be taken away from me because I knew if he was gone, I'd be sold again and I'm sure this time no one would be trying to save me.
I've heard about Capone's grandfather being a very 'influential' and 'powerful' person. If he was anything like him, he would have killed Xavier by now.
I brought my knees up to my chest pulling the comforter closer, hugging it tightly. I knew I'd already lost my family and there was no going back. The only person I trusted now was Xavier.
Even though I didn't know his exact intentions, I knew that I could at least give him the benefit of the doubt because no one would just throw away $10 million for someone he never met.
He never tried to touch or even come near me after he rescued me. Also, like he promised he brought me the best clothes there were at the mall and filled half of his closet with it.
My thoughts were soon interrupted when Leo released a heavy breath in relief, when someone spoke to him through his small ear piece.
"He's here." He threw a quick glance towards me before heading to the door right before it burst open revealing my saviour.
I gulped loudly at the sight of his exotic face, he stared at me in awe. His silky grey suit sculpted his body perfectly emphasizing his 6'2 height.
"Dude..." Leo walked forward engulfing him in a manly hug. They gave a couple of pats on each other's back. However, Xavier's icy blue eyes were glued to my hazel green eyes. "I thought you died." Leo pulled back shaking him by his shoulder.
"Nearly. Capone's men were after me, we had to change the route." He answered emotionlessly keeping his gaze fixated on me. I looked away, hiding the beads of tears forming in my eyes at his confession, a wave of guilt stabbed at my chest.
They were after him because of me.
Leo quickly looked back towards me with a small smile and turned back immediately to whisper something in his ears before heading out the door. As soon as he closed the door behind him, I couldn't sustain myself from jumping up and running into his arms.
They encircled around my small frame, holding me tight, nearly crashing every bone in my body but I honestly didn't care.
He was okay...
I fisted the material of his blazer, sobbing out loud, I buried my face in the crook of his neck. That's when I realised I had the perfect height for him, my head fitted perfectly under his chin without any adjustment.
Like two perfect pieces of a puzzle. My heart clenched at the sudden realisation making me cry even harder.
"Shh... it's okay, I'm fine princess." He kissed the top of my head, rubbing small circles on my back. I quickly pulled away with hazy eyes to check for any injuries that might have been inflicted on him.
Bringing my hands up to his beautiful face, I slowly glided my fingertips across his chiselled jawline. Stubbles prickled my palm. He immediately closed his eyes at my touch and frowned leaning into my touch.
"I'm sorry." I breathed out while I cried him a river.
His eyes snapped open in confusion pulling me even closer towards him – if that was possible- and frowned.
"Why?"
"Because of me, your life's in danger." I replied looking into his intense eyes.
His smile was heartbreaking. "He killed my father and was after me since then, I doubt you had anything to do with it AnnaLynne." My name sounded smooth when it rolled of his tongue.
"But... I'm still sorry." I sighed lowering my gaze to look his silk black tie.
"Stop saying sorry when it's not your fault Princess." He scolded playfully taking my chin between his thumb and first finger to raise my gaze back up him. "You were crying." He stated with a frown.
"I don't like to see you cry." He released me from his hold and brought his hands up to cup my face, swiping away the tears with his thumbs. His touch ignited something within me. I closed my eyes when a foreign electrical impulse coursed through my veins. He sighed and pulled me back into his embrace.
"I missed you." He whispered so softly, I hardly hear him.

"You haven't eaten properly have you?" He questioned when I stuffed my face with chicken chow mein.
"I was worried." I swallowed the food.
"You don't have to worry about me okay?" He set his carton and chopsticks down before continuing. "I need you to be okay." He insisted.
"I need you to be okay too." I told him setting mine down as well, moving over to his couch.
"Xavier." I breathed, preparing myself from asking the question that's been eating at me.
"Yes?"
"Why did you save me?" He was taken aback by my question causing him to widen his eyes. "I mean, why only me?"
"You wanted me to..." He gulped, looking for the right word to sugar coat 'buy' with. "...get them too?" He asked.
"No, no. I mean... that would have been nice but it's not what I meant." I reassured him. "There were six men and six of... us... and I get what it meant but why 10 million dollars? Why for me?" I asked causing him to slump slightly.
"In all honesty, when I saw you there..." He paused. "...I got this urge to protect you. I don't know what it was but... I...I... I just couldn't let anything happen to you. So when the guy approached you I had to do something." He quickly explained making my heart flutter with joy. "If you want I can get them too." His face became sombre.
"Y-" Right when I was about to say yes, I realized trying to save them might cost him his life, so I set my fears aside and asked. "Would it get you hurt?"
"Not straight away. But it will cause problems because this has been their business for decades. No one interferes and because my father is no longer here, I had to take over whether I wanted or not.
"I can't just come in and make everything right... because I don't want my men to be killed. They have families you know." He explained. "Because of my father I'm stuck here. All I can do is slowly turn away from the illegal business and get my men to concentrate on the legal ones. Then, may be no one will get hurt."
Tears prickled my eyes at his confession. There are things you don't expect from certain people. People like Xavier De la Cruz weren't supposed to have humanity. Yet he's nothing but human. I untangled one of my hands from his grip to rest my palm on his jawline and stroked his cheek with my thumb.
"I'm sorry that you're stuck here. You're a very good man Xavier." He shivered under my touch when I pronounced his name.
He sighed after a couple of seconds. "I wanted to be a pilot you know." He sounded sad. "I wanted to travel the world... well I still do but it's not the same." He frowned, thinking about something that definitely bothered him.
"Anna..."
"Yes?" I inched forward wanting to scare his pain away.
"Don't think of me as a monster." He sighed searching my eyes. "Please." He begged. "I never wanted this... I just need you to know that. And I know you never wanted this too but I promise. I promise on my life that I'd never let anything or anyone hurt you. Ever." He spoke through gritted teeth making and his intensity made me whimper.
That moment, I knew and believed I'd be okay as long I had my guardian angel watching over me.
***
After finishing our dinner and a CSI episode I decided to call it a night. He travelled far and must have been tired from his journey. As I laid dab in the middle of his huge bed gawking out the window, I couldn't help but feel safe in his home. I could have ended up somewhere and being used be any men right now.
I shivered in fear at that thought.
I wonder what happened to the other girls. I couldn't get the screeching screams out of my head that scraped across the walls of that golden hall when a girl begged for mercy. One thing that remained embedded in my brain was her last sentence she cursed out.
If there is a God, he'd have to beg for my forgiveness.
A single tear escaped my left eye as pain squeezed my heart again. Xavier left the windows open revealing a perfect dark blanket of silver stars shimmering along the vast horizon.
"Xavier." I called out remembering something that my older sister used to say to me.
"Yes Princess." I heard him shift in his leather couch making it squeak.
"Me and my sister, we loved stargazing and one night she told me something I could never forget." I remained still as another tear escaped my eye sliding down the bridge of my nose. "She said that the stars are angels that watch over us and at our deepest and darkest situations, when we can no longer carry on... they fall down on earth to save us."
"You are my fallen star Xavier." I wiped my tears away quickly and turned around to face him. He was in a sitting position by now with his hands fisted, digging into the edge of the couch.
"Kinda ironic how the meaning of your name is saviour too." I let out a sarcastic chuckle. He became tensed and rigid before his features soften and sunk back down in his couch pulling up his comforter.
"You know my mom died while trying to save me." He confessed, this was the first time he ever mentioned his mother. A nostalgic smile lingered on his luscious lips while he recalled the memories of his past.
"Honestly, I thought I was cursed because I got her killed and I wanted to follow her suit but one thing she told me that kept me going." He paused.
"One day you'll find someone who'd be worth fighting for and when you see her you'd know instantly what I mean." He cranked his neck emphasizing his muscles and look directly at me. His were eyes so angelic that even the darkness around us shied away from him.
"The first time I laid my eyes on you, I knew the meaning of that sentence and I finally found a reason to keep fighting for."
