Chapter 2
Elara sat in the university library, her laptop open, a steaming cup of coffee beside her. The quiet hum of fluorescent lights and the faint rustle of pages formed a cocoon around her as she scrolled through article after article about Maximilian Voss. Her dedication had hardened over the past week, fueled by a gnawing certainty that this man wasn’t what he seemed.
Maximilian Voss was a name whispered with reverence and awe in elite circles. His empire, Voss Holdings, was an complicated web of luxury restaurants, boutique hotels, and high-end catering services spanning across Europe. Each establishment bore the same promise of exclusivity and excellence, making Voss a household name among the wealthy. Yet, beneath the glossy surface, there were cracks, small, almost imperceptible, but there nonetheless. Elara had learned enough about powerful men to know that the most polished facades often hid the darkest secrets.
Elara leaned closer to her screen, her eyes scanning the text. Reports of labor exploitation in his kitchens. Whispers of undocumented workers vanishing overnight. A pattern of businesses linked to Voss caught in allegations of money laundering, though nothing had ever been proven.
And then there were the disappearances.
Over the past six months, a disturbing trend had emerged, young women from poor neighborhoods, often undocumented immigrants, had vanished without a trace. The authorities dismissed most cases as runaways or victims of petty crime, but Elara couldn’t ignore the striking similarities in their stories. Many of the missing women had last been seen near establishments owned by Voss Holdings.
Coincidence? Or something far more sinister?
“Elara, you’ve been at this for hours,” Lila’s voice broke her concentration. She looked up to see her best friend plopping into the seat across from her, a croissant in hand. “Did you even eat today?”
Elara gave her a distracted smile. “I’ll grab something later.”
Lila glanced at the screen, frowning. “Still digging into Voss?”
“Still digging,” Elara confirmed. “There’s something off about him, Lila. The missing girls, the shady dealings, it all feels connected.”
Lila studied her for a moment, then sighed. “Okay, Sherlock, what’s the plan? You’re not planning to, I don’t know, confront him, right?”
“Of course not,” Elara said, though the thought had crossed her mind. “But I need to convince Professor Avery to let me pursue this for my investigative project.”
Professor Avery was a man of precision and structure. His reputation as a hard-nosed journalist preceded him, and he demanded the same rigor from his students. Elara knew getting his approval wouldn’t be easy, but she was prepared.
“Maximilian Voss?” Professor Avery repeated, raising a skeptical eyebrow as Elara outlined her proposal in his office the next day. His desk was cluttered with papers, a testament to his chaotic brilliance. “Elara, I admire your enthusiasm, but you’re chasing ghosts. There’s no solid evidence linking Mr. Voss to anything illegal.”
“That’s because no one’s looking hard enough,” Elara countered, her voice firm. “This isn’t just about a businessman with deep pockets. It’s about the girls who’ve gone missing, the people he’s silenced. If we don’t expose him, who will?”
Avery sighed, rubbing his temples. “You’re risking a lot for a hunch. What about the safer stories we discussed? The local political scandals, the environmental violations—”
“With all due respect, Professor, those stories matter, but this could be life-changing,” Elara interrupted. “If there’s even a chance that I’m right, don’t we owe it to those girls to find the truth?”
Avery stared at her for a long moment, his expression unreadable. Finally, he leaned back in his chair, crossing his arms. “Alright, Moreau. You’ve got my blessing...for now. But if this spirals out of control, I’m pulling the plug. Understood?”
“Understood,” Elara said, relief flooding through her.
That evening, she told Lila about Avery’s reluctant approval.
“You really are something, you know that?” Lila said, shaking her head with a mix of admiration and exasperation. “Most people would take no for an answer.”
“Most people aren’t me,” Elara replied with a grin.
But while she shared her triumph with Lila, she chose not to mention it to Rafe. He’d been her biggest supporter through everything, but this was different. She didn’t want him worrying or trying to talk her out of it. Besides, he had enough on his plate with his studies and projects.
Instead, when they met at the café the following afternoon, she let herself relax in his presence. They sat by the window, sharing a plate of pastries, and when Rafe leaned over to kiss her, she felt her resolve strengthen. She was doing this for people like him...good, honest people who deserved a world free from predators like Voss.
By the end of the week, Elara had compiled a detailed dossier on Voss. She mapped out his empire, traced the disappearances, and jotted down every lead, no matter how small. But there was one piece of information that stood out: the gala.
A high-profile event at his private estate. A gathering of Europe’s most powerful. It was the perfect opportunity to infiltrate his world.
As she stared at her notes, Elara felt a mix of excitement and dread. She was stepping into dangerous territory, but she couldn’t turn back now.
Maximilian Voss wasn’t just a name on a screen anymore, he was the shadow looming over her once-perfect life. And she was determined to bring him into the light.
