Chapter 27: Gralea
Inside the train, the Prince and his retinue were sitting in the dining car, waiting for time to pass as they were heading for the imperial capital, Gralea.
Biggs soon comes on the intercom.
Biggs: (intercom) Oi! Uh--attention all passengers! We're on our way to our final destination in the imperial capital. Enjoy the ride. I'll be in touch if anything comes up.
Gladiolus: (staring out window) Look at all that snow. No wonder it's so cold in here.
Y/N: It wouldn't be if the empire hadn't killed the Glacian.
Ignis: Yes, we must be approaching the Glacian's cadaver.
Gladiolus: Won't be a blessing if all we got's a body.
Ignis: Let us hope we pass through the gorge without incident.
Gladiolus: It's what's after the gorge I'm worried about.
Y/N: Probably lot's of daemons waitin' at the end.
Normally, Noctis would walk around the train as he was board. But there was something to talk about, gaining a smirk of his face.
Noctis: So, Y/N.
Y/N: Yeah?
Noctis: After this is all over, you looking to swoon Aranea?
Y/N: ...Huh? The hell you going on about?
Noctis: Oh come on, I see the way you look at her.
Y/N: Look there's--
Gladiolus: Out of all the girls in the Crown City, you never gave them any attention. But with Aranea, it's different.
Y/N: Well--
Ignis: They are right, Y/N. You never really acted like this with any other girl. Especially in the Crown City.
Y/N: (sigh) I don't know. I guess, I haven't really thought about it. Something is different about her.
Gladiolus: Yeah, well, you'll have plenty of time right after we get our job done.
Y/N: Right.
Gladiolus: Once we get through Ghorovas, we're there.
Ignis: We've come quite a long way.
Y/N: Yeah...we have.
Waiting in the dining room a bit longer, Noctis's phone begins to ring.
Noctis: Who could this be? (answers phone) Hey, what's up?
...
...
Noctis: Okay, thanks for letting us know. (ends call)
Y/N: Well?
Before he could answer, they felt the train slow down. The three of them go to the window, the advisor remaining in his seat, and look out.
The trains wheels start to grind.
Gladiolus: I wonder what it could be this time.
Biggs: (intercom) Attention, eh!
Gladiolus: Yeah?
Noctis: What's wrong?
Biggs: (intercom) You may have noticed we stopped. As for the cause...outside, will ya?
Noctis: We'll take a look.
Biggs: (intercom) Oh, well.
Y/N: (sigh) Just our luck.
Gladiolus: Hope it's just a quick snow-shoveling job.
Ignis: Indeed.
The four of them get out of the train, into the freezing cold. In front of them, next to the bridge, was the Glacian's ice cold corpse.
Noctis: (shivers) It's freezing!
Y/N: Y-Yeah...brrrr. Should've packed a better jacket.
Gladiolus: Better keep moving to stay warm.
Ignis: The Glacian did this.
Y/N: It's corpse is right in front of us.
Noctis: I think I can see her.
Gladiolus: It's a shame. She's lying dead. (shivers) Damn, it's cold!
Y/N: Daemons incoming!
Noctis: Let's clean up out here, warm up in there.
Gladiolus: Better make this snappy.
Noctis chains his warp-strikes as Gladiolus moves up with him, Y/N staying behind as he helps protect Ignis from any daemons that come their way. Noctis link-strikes with Gladiolus, Noctis striking up as Gladiolus jumps off his back, summoning a shield as he bashes a daemons head in.
Using his senses, Ignis tosses a spell towards one of the daemons, it dealing damage as Noctis warps in, using one of Ignis's polearms as he thrusts it in. Y/N quickly slides in, slashing the knees of the goblin-like daemons and Noctis takes a fire spell, casting it as it explodes on the daemons that Y/N had slashed. Behind them was a Necromancer daemon, Noctis warping to it as he calls Y/N, the red haired male using his Flame Art, Blazer, rushing up as he slashes upwards. Noctis then warps up, taking Y/N's one-handed sword and slamming it down on the daemon that was launched into the air, causing it to crash to the ground as it disappears.
Similar to a Necromancer daemon, a Wraith appears, letting out a breath-like attack. They dodge out of the way and Noctis activates his Armiger, warping forward as he thrusts the Scepter of the Pious forward and quickly switches to the Sword of the Tall, swinging it around as the unique feature of the sword ripping right through the daemon.
The battle doesn't seem to end however as more daemons begin to appear, some rising out of the ground.
Utilizing the power of the Armiger, Noctis summons the royal arms he has at his disposal, zipping around the area as he quickly eliminates his foes. Soon, a Deathclaw daemon appears. It opens it's mouth, a red beam coming out of it as they all narrowly dodge out of the way, the beam hitting the ice that blocked the train.
Link-striking with Gladiolus, he slashes upwards with his two-handed sword, Noctis coming up with his Ultima Blade as he slashes twice with it. Y/N goes to it's legs, using Flare Blade as he slightly decreases it's power so he could recover easily from it. Summoning his Armiger once more, Noctis does an Armiger Chain, wearing down the Deathclaw. Running out of the Armiger energy, it deactivates and Noctis resorts to his Ultima Blade, warping around the Deathclaw to deal damage.
Ignis would hand potions and elixirs considering he couldn't do much. Ignis uses his Tactical Art, Libra Elementia, using the effective spell and tosses it, it being flames. Gladiolus then does his Glaive Art, Tempest, swinging his two-handed sword with force as wind picks up, dragging the Deathclaw in for a powerful strike. Y/N then comes in with his Flame Art, Double-Edged Dance, doing four consecutive strikes as he infuses flames into the blade.
With the last strike, Noctis swings down the Blade of the Mystic, eliminating the Deathclaw. Out of breath, they finished the battle and began to board the train once more.
However, something wasn't right once they got in.
As Y/N, Gladiolus, and Ignis got in first, Ardyn walks past the doorway, shocking Noctis.
Noctis: No way. You! Hold it!
Upon entering, he finds that he wasn't there. No one was in sight.
Noctis: (growls) That son of a bitch.
Entering the passenger cars, he sees it was cold, mist emanating off the ground.
Noctis: What the hell?
Going through two more, he opens the next door and is met with a cold breeze. Coming in contact with his face, he shields it from the cold.
He could then see the silhouette of Ardyn. Walking, he calls out to him.
Noctis: Stop! Stop, dammit! Where is he? Where's Prompto!?
Ardyn: (turns around) Oh, there you are! I'm worried about your friends. They've fallen and they can't get up. Why not lend them a hand?
Noctis begins to falter as his eyes slowly go to his friends, the three of them on the ground. The cold then grows stronger.
Ardyn: A coldness that can only be hers.
Noctis falls to the floor, slowly glancing up to see a woman walk towards him. It was Gentiana. Ardyn grins as he looks towards the raven haired lady.
Ardyn: Ahhh, the face you wore the day you--
Gentiana brings a finger to her lips, touching it as she touches the finger with Ardyn, him turning to ice. Noctis looks up at the messenger, shivering.
Gentiana: Let it now be done...as promised to the Oracle.
A bright blue light shines as Gentiana's appearance started to change. The light recedes, revealing Gentiana with blue skin with fairy-like wings. Her hair was an icy-blue.
Noctis: Gentiana--it's you. You're the Glacian. Wha--
Something begins to form in her hands.
Gentiana: O King of Kings, restore Light unto the world.
From her hands, a trident forms. The very same trident that Lunafreya held.
The Trident of the Oracle.
Noctis shakily takes the glaive, tears waiting to come out as he remembers Lunafreya. As he grasped it, he sees a memory.
Flashback
In Tenebrae, someone was walking up to Lunafreya. That being her older brother, Ravus.
Ravus: Sister, cease this madness. That boy will never be King.
Lunafreya: Noctis is chosen. It is ordained. You of all people should know.
Ravus: I know that you are throwing your life away!
Lunafreya: That may be! But...it's my choice. If only...if only I could...hear his voice once more...if we could laugh together as we did as children...
The Oracle begins to cry, knowing her fate. She wanted to be with Noctis once more.
Flashback End
Having obtained the Mark of the Glacian, Noctis was more determined than ever, glancing at the ice Ardyn, he summons the Trident of the Oracle.
Noctis: Damn you.
Swinging it, he shatters the ice sculpture. He then makes his way to his unconscious friends, shaking them.
Noctis: Hey. Wake up.
Gladiolus: (groans) The hell happened?
Y/N: (groans) It felt like I was in a eternal sleep.
Ignis: (grunts) Noct. Are you alright?
Noctis: Yeah. I saw the Glacian. It's okay, she's gone now. You guys check on our drivers.
Gladiolus: Got it. (looks to Ignis) You good?
Ignis: Yes, I'm fine. Let's go.
The three leave Noctis so he could recover. As Noctis rested, he sees petals of the sylleblossom. Looking up, away from the blue petals, he sees the familiar sight of the Oracle.
Noctis: Luna.
He goes out to reach for her, the blonde maiden smiling before she disappears. Noctis grunts in frustration before crying as a singular sylleblossom petal makes it's way into his hand.
Noctis: It's so hard. Guess it was hard for you, too. I'm sorry I couldn't be there for you.
Standing back up, he looks onward, moving up to the front as the train begins to move again. But, he hears a ruckus behind him and turns around, seeing the chancellor there once more.
Ardyn: (grins) I feel I've earned the right to call you Noct. For a moment I felt death's chill wind, such is the might of the gods. But then, I remembered I'm immortal. Such is my blessing and curse. Your attack hurt me, nevertheless...my feelings, at least. And after all the memories we've shared. Remember this?
Going into his coat, Ardyn pulls out a revolver. One that belonged to Prompto Argentum.
Ardyn: Ah, I should have asked if you remember him. Truly a blast from the past, nay?
As Ardyn pushes the pistol to Noctis, he goes to take it, only for the chancellor to tighten his grip on the gun.
Ardyn: Ah, ah, ah! You mustn't take what's not yours.
Noctis: Where is he!?
Ardyn: "He"? (smirks) The little gunman's a short shot away.
Noctis: Where!?
Ardyn: Where else but Gralea, the seat of the empire? I'm sure he'll be delighted to see you. And you might even find your Crystal. With all these daemons about, you could certainly use it. Off you go, then. I wouldn't want to keep you from your friend.
The chancellor activates a button, confusing the prince. Ardyn walks away as Noctis looks back to where the others had went.
Timeskip
Ignis, Y/N, Gladiolus, and Noctis were once again in the dining car.
Ignis: We should be drawing close to Gralea.
Noctis: Yeah.
Gladiolus: I can't imagine what it'll be like.
Y/N: Try imagine tons of MTs on your ass.
Noctis: That too. Also swarming with daemons, but you knew that.
Gladiolus: (scoffs) Don't remind me.
Ignis: Once we arrive, we'll make for the Keep.
Noctis: The Keep?
Ignis: Zegnautus. An imperial megafortress said to be impregnable.
Noctis: With Prompto and the Crystal inside it.
Gladiolus: What goes in, must come out. So, are we buying this story that the Crystal can purge the daemons?
Ignis: The proof is in the purging.
Y/N: But it does stand to reason.
Ignis: We've observed that as the nights grow longer, the daemon hordes have grown stronger. If they are in fact averse to the Crystal's Light, it could save not only Lucis...
Y/N: But the whole entire world. But it's not going to be easy.
Noctis: We'll find out once we get it back.
Soon, the train begins to stop, the lights of the tunnel beginning to dim.
Gladiolus: The hell?
Ignis: What is it?
Y/N: The train's stopped.
Gladiolus: My guess? Something to sidetrack us.
They get out of their seats and begin walking to the front. Upon entering a lodging car, the glass next to the starts to crack. A large impact had smashed into the train, causing the four of them to fall to the floor.
Gladiolus: What now?
Biggs: (intercom) City's trying to keep us out...with the daemons.
Soon, goblin daemons start to come onto the glass, grinning manically at them.
Gladiolus: Whoa-whoa.
Biggs: (intercom) Gotta run! Don't worry about us!
Noctis: Let's get to work...
Noctis tries to summon his weapons, but he couldn't.
Gladiolus: What's wrong?
Noctis: The weapons...they're stuck!
Gladiolus: Get back!
One of them charges at Noctis, Gladiolus pushing him out of the way and kicks it off of him.
Y/N: Yeah, I think that's our cue to--
Ignis: Run!
Gladiolus: C'mon, move it!
Ignis: Only matter of time we run out of room to run!
Y/N: Then let's pick up the pace!
Noctis: Got a better idea!?
Ignis: We trade the train for the Regalia!
Gladiolus: C'mon!
Noctis: On my way!
Ignis: Noct! The freight car!
Y/N: Let's go, let's go, let's go!
The run through the train cars, dodging the attacks as they couldn't summon their weapons.
Arriving at the freight car, Y/N got into the driver's seat and Noctis got in the passenger one, Ignis and Gladiolus getting in the back.
Noctis: Strap in.
Gladiolus: Gun it, Y/N!
Y/N: Let's get the hell out of here!
Driving out of the freight car, they begin to drive towards the capital. A voice is then heard on the announcer.
Announcer: Threat upgraded. Activating level 4 security measures. Sealing all gates.
Gladiolus: Put the petal to the metal!
Y/N: That's the idea! Hang on!
Y/N drives the Regalia down the tunnel, speeding through as daemons gave chase.
Ignis: Where are we now!?
Noctis: Inside a tunnel--on the train tracks!
Y/N: I'm not slowing down, they'll catch up! I'm going as fast as I can! Hang on!
Dodging the debris and destroyed train cars, he speeds through the tunnel. Y/N then turns to the side, an explosion occurring behind them.
Ignis: What was that!?
Noctis: They're trying to blow us off the tracks.
Y/N: Hang on!
Gladiolus: One clean hit, and it's over.
Ignis: It'll take a bit more than that to stop His Majesty's trusty steed.
Gladiolus: Dodging one thing to run into another.
Ignis: The Regalia can take the punishment. Y/N, focus on your driving.
Noctis: You can do this, girl. You can get through this.
The Regalia starts to flare up as the projectiles from the dreadnoughts were blasting it. Up ahead were the gates.
Gladiolus: It's closing! Floor it!
Noctis: C',mon old girl...
Y/N: Brace for impact!
With one more blast, they got through the gates and the Regalia's engine stalls. Coming to a stop, they sigh in relief.
Noctis: ...Dad...
Gladiolus: That's all she's got.
Noctis: It'll do.
They get out of the car, staring at it one last time. Noctis then remembered when Cor drove up in it, his father getting out of the car as he turned to look at him. His father would smile down upon him.
Noctis: ...Dad...thanks for everything.
Turning around, they face themselves to their objective. Zegnautus Keep.
