The Beginning
"I'll be one of your best friends! -Momiji Sohma
A blonde haired boy stood tall, staring out of the window at the dark night. The fluorescent moonlight casting an eerie glow that lit up his pale skin, lightened his blonde hair, and twinkled in his chocolate brown eyes.
An elder male adorned by sparkling amethyst eyes and lilac hair that accented his slightly tanned skin, he stood slightly shorter than the tall blonde and seemed almost like a girl.
"Are you sure you'll be alright alone Momiji?" The lilac haired boy asked.
"I'll be fine. It'll only be for a week right? Besides I should be asking you that." The blonde, Momiji, teased lightly.
Yuki gave him an unimpressed look.
"I've gotten better." He protested while fingering his travel bag.
"Yeah, yeah. You take care, you hear?" Momiji smiled.
"Of course." He nodded.
Momiji smiled and waved Yuki off as he got into the car waiting for him before turning back to the starry night sky.
A sad smile appeared on his cheerful face. He closed his eyes and fingered the charm bracelet he had taken to carrying everywhere.
"Three years have passed Heart Girl, you're finally coming back, huh?"
Somewhere, past the woods, within the town, in front of a small house, a young girl tilted her head, her brown hair brushing her pale skin and honey brown eyes searching the night, she was certain she had heard something.
"Hinata." Her twin brother gently nudged, his brown hair accenting his green eyes that stood bold on his tan skin.
"I'm coming Hideaki..." She nodded and smiled weakly before looking to the pavement and walking inside.
Hideaki watched her go before looking at the night with narrowed eyes. He didn't want come back to Japan, much less this town, but his grandmother had passed away so he didn't really have a choice but to go with his distant cousin. Technically she was adopted so she wasn't even his cousin. Hinata would've hit him for saying that but it was the truth.
Her name was Mayuko Shiraki, a teacher at the school he used to attend in this place.
Apparently she was engaged to a guy named Hatori.
Hideaki grimaced one last time before he followed inside.
"I'm going to send you to live with a family friend for a while Hina-"
"No!" Both Hinata and Mayuko looked up in surprise.
"I'm sorry Hideaki but this is how things will be." Mayuko said firmly.
"I'm not leaving Hinata alone." He shook his head.
"Hideaki...don't be unreasonable...I'll be fine." Hinata frowned, fidgeting nervously.
"Hinata-"
"H-Hideaki you may be my brother but you can't d-dictate my life. It w-won't be forever. We should th-thank Miss Shiraki for not just dumping us in an orphanage." Hinata murmured quietly.
Mayuko's eyes softened, she often remembered a similar girl that often trailed around one of her students, Tohru, like a little duckling. Back then, she was more open, more loud.
She was also often trailed by a blonde boy in her following years before she disappeared.
Later, when she was engaged to Hatori, she was finally told the family secret and what happened to the younger Honda.
It was almost unreal to see her again like this. She wasn't the short, cheerful 15 year old girl she used to know.
Somehow, she was even more timid than when she was 14. She stared at the ground, spoke quietly, and fidgeted as if just one unknown person was terrifying for her.
"I really am sorry Hinata. It was either sending you to a friend or a house full of men."
"I-It's fine ma'am." She shifted into herself, burrowing her face into her scarf.
"You can stay here for tonight, do you mind sharing a futon?"
"That'll be fine." Hideaki said tightly.
Hinata trailed after her brother, biting her lip and cursing herself for making him upset.

"This is where we separate." Hideaki said sadly.
"Y-Yeah."
"I'll see you after school, yeah?"
"Ok."
Hinata pulled on her jacket sleeves and clenched them in her hand. She hunched her shoulders and shuffled forward.
She was unused to this. Everything she could ever remember was drawn to a little American house she wasn't allowed to leave.
She was homeschooled from the moment she was released from the hospital, her grandmother and twin brother were afraid to let her be introduced to anyone.
So she spent her life in solitude.
Hinata walked into her classroom hesitantly, surveying the class she found a seat in the back corner of the room, empty.
She hurried to her seat and slumped down once she reached it.
The class was rather small. Made up of students who scored nearly perfect on the exam.
A total of 11 other students were in the class.
There were a 5 girls and 6 boys. The one sitting a few seats in front of me was a boy with black, greenish hair. He had blank purple eyes and was adorned in black.
"Ok, today we will begin with introductions. You will be with this class for your final year in high school so, let's make the most of it." Mayu-sensei smiled.
"Aya Fuji, age 18, transferred from Scarlet Academy." A blonde girl smiled.
"Dai Akita, age 17, attended this school." As the introductions continued on, Megumi began to get bored. When it was finally his turn, several students pointedly looked away.
"Megumi Hanajima, age 18, attended here." He sighed and sat back down.
For a moment, an image of a younger blacked haired boy reading under a tree but looking up when a girl came fluttered across Hinata's mind.
Hinata tried to concentrate on the faces in the image, but as immediate as they came, they disappeared.
Hinata sighed and stood up, not facing anyone.
"Hinata...Hayashi, age 17, h-homeschooled." She said nervously before quickly sitting down.
Megumi whipped around, shock on his face. He blinked furiously, as if chasing away any illusions.
But there she was. His childhood friend. Her short brown hair went to her mid back now, her eyes seemed to look in every direction, her hands twitched as she squeezed them together, her tan skin seemed pale, as if she was scared.
But she was here.
The class period was spent getting to know each other but Megumi couldn't take his eyes off of her.
She had turned from an innocently cute girl, to this beautiful, shy girl.
And it broke his heart he wasn't there during this transformation.
When the lunch bell rang, Hinata quietly pulled out a bento and made no move to sit with anyone.
Megumi clenched his fists. This time, he would approach her. He would befriend her again.
Megumi stood up and walked to the reserved girl.
She perked up through her eyelashes nervously. "Y-Yes Hanajima-san?"
Megumi flinched and shook his head. "Just call me Megumi."
"Y-Yes Megumi-san." She stuttered out.
Megumi sighed but remembered she used to do this when they first met too.
"Do you mind if my friend and I sat with you Hinata-chan?"Megumi asked kindly.
"It doesn't bother me M-Megumi-san but why with m-me?"
"You are new to this school, yeah?" She nodded slowly. "Well then you'll need someone to show you around and besides, wouldn't you rather have friends while you are here?" He smiled softly.
Hinata stared at him bewildered before she smiled a dazzling bright smile that put the sun to shame.
Megumi's heart clenched. God he missed that smile.
The door to the classroom opened and a blonde boy stepped through.
Immediately, all the boys and girls lined up with hearts in their eyes. "Prince Momiji~!" They cried.
Chocolate brown eyes scanned over the crowd before landing on stunned honey brown. Shock filtered through his eyes and they stared at one another for a moment that felt like eternity before he smiled softly and walked to the desk Megumi sat at.
"Momiji, this is Hinata Hayashi." Megumi said with a knowing look in his eyes.
Momiji tilted his head and smiled childishly innocent.
"Hello Hinata, my name is Momiji Sohma."
"N-Nice to meet you you S-Sohma-san." Hinata smiled weakly.
"Why are you sitting here all alone? It's a nice day to eat outside." He pondered.
"A-Ah you see, I-I have a weak heart s-so I can't stay in the sun very long." She said apologetically.
"Don't you have any friends?" He asked gently.
Hinata shook her head and burrowed into her scarf.
Momiji smiled and winked.
"Really? But you are so cute! Don't worry, Megumi and I'll be your best friends!" He said cheerfully.
Hinata stared at him as words rang through her head.
"You're funny! Wanna be friends?"
"Are you sure you wanna be friends with me? ____ is my only friend."
"Eh? But you're so cute! I know! I'll be one of you're best friends!"
But as soon as they came. They were gone.
Hinata smiled happily and nodded. "I would like that Sohma-san, Megumi-san."
"Okay you aren't allowed to do that." Momiji pouted.
"W-What?"
"Call me Momiji, and don't add any honorific to our name. We're best friends now." He smiled cheerfully.
Hinata smiled and laughed softly, agreeing, tension melting from her body.
Momiji smiled softly, God he missed her.

A knock at his door pulled him from his thoughts. Momiji leapt up and hurried to the door.
Outside stood his teacher Mayu-sensei and Hinata looking scared and nervous.
Momiji smiled and stepped outside.
Hinata looked up with surprised eyes.
"I leave her in your care Momiji." Mayu-sensei smiled softly.
She left the two in front of the house. The setting sun glinting on their hair.
Momiji smiled and tilted his head.
"Welcome to my home Hinata~" He said cheerfully.
"You...you own this house?" She asked with wide, awestruck eyes.
"Well, I share it with my older cousin Yuki but yeah." He said sheepishly.
"R...Really." She murmured.
"Well, I sure hope you like microwaveable dinners Hinata~! Because that's the only thing I know how to cook." He smiled cutely.
"I-I know how to cook." She spoke up, shuffling her feet. "As payment for staying here, may I cook and help with chores?" She asked, blinking her doe honey brown eyes.
Momoi bit down his blush and beamed. "Of course!"
"I...I look forward to living with you M-Momiji."
"Me too Hinata." Momiji smiled nostalgically.
