Before and After
"Hinata! Guesssssss what!" Momiji cheered as he skipped in circles.
"Yes Momiji-chan?" She smiled pleasantly as he sent a mock glare.
"I've decided to become the cool and silent type." She raised an eyebrow at him in amusement.
"Oh really? Why this sudden transformation?"
"I've heard that girls chase after the cool guys." He said seriously.
"Oh so you want girls chasing after you?" Hinata chuckled and stored away that information for the future.
"Only a couple." Momiji flushed. 'Maybe you would like me the way I like you.' He thought.
-Momiji and Hinata

"Momiji if I may ask, how on earth did you mess up boiling water?" Shyness was forgotten as Hinata stared incredulously at the water that had turned to smoke.
"...I don't know..." Momiji chuckled sheepishly.
Hinata then shooed him out of the kitchen.
As soon as she was out of sight, he allowed himself to beam. This was the first time she had looked him in the eye, with a playful spark, and forgot her stutter.
Score 1 for Momiji and 0 for Hideabitch.
Mayu-sensei told him how Hideaki reacted to Hinata living with someone else and he had been a little too happy when Hinata pushed that guy back.
He heard Hinata mutter, "Honestly, when he told me he couldn't cook I didn't think it was this bad..."
Ok to be fair, his cooking ability was mostly Yuki's fault. Man couldn't cook to save his life despite the fact he was already 20.
Momiji's phone rang and he mentally smacked himself across the face. He didn't tell Yuki Hinata was back!
Before, it happened. Yuki and Hinata were good friends. Hinata pushed Yuki to Tohru and encouraged him the whole way. He even called her by her name and he only does that with family!
Momiji snuck up stairs and closed the door gently before answering Yuki's call.
"Hello?"
"Momiji, I was just calling beforehand but Kyo and Honda-san have decided to come home with me for a stay. I wanted to make sure that was okay with you firs-"
"You can't!" Momiji cried quite loudly before quickly shutting his mouth.
"Momiji, are you alright?" Hinata called in concern from downstairs.
"I'm fine." He called before turning back to the call.
"Momiji who were you talking to?" Yuki asked in confusion.
"Yuki...she came back." Momiji fought to reign his absolute joy and speak responsibly, he would keep control of the spirit of the rabbit, he didn't want Hinata to think he was childish.
"She? Who is-" Yuki stopped talking abruptly. "H-Hinata-san?" He asked quietly.
"Yeah." Momiji smiled, hearing his voice shake with emotions.
"We have to come home, right now." Yuki demanded.
"No, no you can't. At least not Tohru or Kyo." Momiji shook his head.
"Why not?" He asked in frustration.
"Yuki think logically. Hinata has no memories. What will she think when everyone is looking at her as if she came back to life and Tohru burst into tears while hugging her?"
"Tohru is her sister."
"I know but Tohru just can't push down her emotions. We can't overwhelm her." Momiji explained calmly despite the fact the spirit of the rabbit was pushing him to give in with a cheerful "Okay!"
"We can't just keep this from her." He protested.
"You can tell her, but we can't overwhelm her. Hatori told me that the memories can come back but the chances are really low, and when the memories begin to stick the person becomes ill. Imagine if Hinata remembered you, me, Tohru, and Kyo all at once." Momiji explained grimly.
It was silent on the other end.
"It could most likely kill her." Yuki said finally.
"Yeah, yeah it could." Momiji remembered Hatori strictly reminding him to not try to get her to remember things forcefully or tell her how she lost her memories in the first place.
The first memory that stuck would be the worst, Hatori had explained.
They would wake up with a severe illness that would stay for up to 5 days, 3 if you were lucky.
The second memory your body would slowly get used to it so you would have a bad cold that would last 2-3 days.
The third memory was taxing on the mind to the point of an emotional breakdown.
Lastly, the important memories such as in Hinata's case, Yuki and Kyo coming back for her and Tohru, meeting Momiji, having Kisa and Hiro look to her like a big sister (though Hiro would never admit it, Kagura swore she saw him crying when Kisa was gone after hearing about Hinata) and other occurrences such as meeting Megumi could trigger a violent illness that left others bedridden.
Sometimes if more than one important memory was triggered during the illness, the person would most likely die. Add in her weak heart and the chances shot up from 60% to 80%.
It was...frustrating.
He wanted to tell her everything they had ever done.
Accepting him when he turned into a rabbit.
The start of Bunny Boy and Heart Girl.
Going to watch the sunrise.
Making a New Years wish together.
Tutoring him.
Buying him chocolates when he pouted.
Taking her to the hot spring.
Hell, even going to high school together.
It was depressing to think that just like that, every single thing that they did together, that made them best friends, that made them fall for each other, that made them who they were, was simply gone. As if the world had decided they weren't allowed to be happy.
That's why he hated rainy days. Back then, he would spend it as a rabbit in Hinata's arms as they watched the rain fall onto the ground. Now, he spent it looking out the window and wondering if some of the skies tears was for their pain and loss too.
When he would comment that the rain was depressing, Hibata would laugh at him and tell him, "The rain is soothing when you are around people you care about, the fact that you are watching the sky cry out the pain of hundreds of people but being near and sharing warmth with special people you know would absolutely never hurt you, is addicting."
Momiji, elated that she trusted him to never hurt her, smiled secretly to himself and nuzzled into her arms, looking at the rain in just a little different perspective.
He had never realized how true her words were the first time it has rained and she wasn't there.
He had found himself staring out his window before he suddenly wasn't there. He was in her room. Nothing had changed. He sat on her bed and held her pillow to his chest and watched the rain fall alone, imagining better times where she would pop in and smiled before opening her arms.
Instead Yuki looked at him sadly and told him, "You shouldn't do this to yourself."
He knew he was right. He would stop.
At least that what he told himself.
Yet the next rainy day, there he was again and he knew he wouldn't stop.
The rainy days began to get harder to bear when Hinata's old scent of sunflowers and cinnamon began to fade into the smell of dust, worn away from the nights Momiji would have nightmares and burst into her room, clinging to her pillow for comfort.
When school started again, no one remembered the girl they used to ignore and bully.
It was like she never existed.
The sad part was, Hatori didn't even erase their memories.
Was that why she had begged him in her letter to not forget her? His heart broke at the very thought.
Megumi hadn't talked for a few days, Megumi could see the heartbreak in his eyes and he couldn't help but feel like it was his fault.
Megumi had assured him he didn't blame him but he could still see the raw pain in his usually expressionless eyes.
That pain never faded in the 3 years she was gone.
For the first time, when Hinata had come back today, he could see happiness instead of pain.
Megumi was a good friend. He had always been kind and accepted him when he had accidentally turned into a rabbit in front of him.
In the years that followed when Momiji had turned into "Yuki the second", girls often tried to 'hug' him (really more like tackle) but he was always saved by Megumi whose murderous aura and whispered curses scared them away. Yeah, he was a good friend.
On some occasions he would walk in on Megumi staring at a picture wistfully, a blacked haired little boy smiling and holding a peace sign and resting a hand on a young brunette who mimicked him, smiling happily.
Momiji assumed it was him and Hinata from their younger days.
Every now and then a girl would come up to Megumi and confess but he always looked at them with disdain. The same expression Momiji wanted to use when his fan club would confess every Friday under a sakura tree, thinking this time would be different.
It never was, he couldn't look at any girls without comparing them to Hinata.
One brunette once looked so much like her he called her Heart Girl.
It soon spread around the school that Momiji had a crush on a girl he nicknamed Heart Girl.
Dozens of girls did ridiculous things such as saying their middle name was Heart, saying they had a heart shaped face, and even taping hearts to their faces and body.
One girl even got a tattoo of a heart on her chest and ripped off her shirt in the middle of class to show him.
He had never been so throughly scarred.
And stupid, perverted Haru had commented that he thought the first chest Momiji would see would be Hinata's but Haru guessed it was impossible because she didn't have a chest.
Momiji had locked him into the janitors closet and refused to let him out until 3 days had passed. Haru had survived on water bottles and granola bars.
He didn't make a comment about Hinata again.
Momiji heard a quiet rapping at the door before Hinata called, "Dinner is ready."
Momiji beamed and bounced outside. As he burst through the door, Hinata looked surprised and taken aback.
"Thanks Hina-chan!" He chirped, the brunette blinked but let a soft smile appear on her face.
As they sat for the meal, Hinata shifted uncomfortably as Momiji stared at her.
"I-Is there something wrong with it?" She asked quietly.
"H-Huh? N-No!" His face burned with embarrassment before he grinned. "We are going to be living together but all I know is that you are shy and your name is Hinata Hon-Hayashi." Hinata eyed him in confusion at his almost slip but shook it off when he grinned sheepishly.
"Well...what do you want to know?" She asked.
"What school did you used to go to?" He asked.
"I didn't really go to a school. I u-used to live in America and I-I was homeschooled."
"Isn't America really sunny? Why are you so pale?" He asked tilting his head childishly.
Hinata swallowed her laugh at the innocent gesture and allowed her tense shoulders to relax, he was like a child, he isn't anything what Hideaki told her boys were like.
"My grandmother and brother were really nervous about me leaving the house so I didn't really go out much. The only time I was allowed to leave was a quick trip to get groceries or tend to the garden. My brother would go to a public school and my grandmother was often out visiting her friends. Sometimes I would sneak out to the prairie behind our home. I liked watching the sunrise." Hinata smiled wistfully.
Momiji's smiled faltered for a split second, he often watched the sunrise though he would never go to their spot on the cliff. It felt, wrong, to go without her.
It warmed him to think that she, at least subconsciously, never forgot this.
He smiled cheerfully. "That's sounds great. If you ever feel up to it, I know a great place to watch the sunrise."
Hinata looked at him in surprise before smiling happily. "That sounds like a plan. Just don't tell my brother." She laughed quietly.
"Why not?" He asked genuinely curious. He would really like to rub it in that dumb guys face.
Hinata grimaced, "He wouldn't let me go."
"Can't you just tell him to back off?"
"I-I can't." She blushed in embarrassment. "I can't just tell him to go away. He's basically the only person I know. I love my brother. But he's just so...smothering. He doesn't let me go anywhere or do anything and when he does it has to be with him. I don't even know why." She sighed.
"I know I should be glad I have a caring sibling but he and my grandmother basically put me on lockdown. They locked my door at 7pm! Who does that?" Hinata asked in frustration.
"That sounds horrible." Momiji frowned sincerely. "They never let you go anywhere?"
"No, the only people I knew were my grandma, brother, and the mailman." She frowned.
"That's it?" He asked incredulously.
Hinata flushed and looked away, "Well if I knew anyone else I can't remember them. 3 years ago I woke up in a hospital and I couldn't remember anything." A moment of silence ensued before she shook her head.
"I'm sorry, I rambled again." Hinata smiled sheepishly.
"I don't mind." He said with a charming smile. "I like listening to you."
She gave him a skeptical look, this time a blush was absent from her face.
"Don't do that...thing." She said finally,
"Thing?" He blinked.
"That weird thing I read guys do."
"Sorry. It's kinda in my nature to flirt." He laughed happily.
Hinata gave him an unimpressed look. "If I may say so Momiji, I don't think that is your nature."
He blinked and looked at her honey brown eyes.
"I know I just met you but, for some reason, I don't think you are a manipulative flirt like my brother told me boys are."
"I can't see you as anything but a cheerful and childish guy." She smiled.
"I-I'm not childish! I'm mature and cool!" He blushed and protested firmly.
"I didn't mean to offend you but that wasn't meant to be an insult. I think if all guys were like you, life would be a lot more fun."
Momiji's eye softened and he felt a desperate urge to pull her into a hug.
He almost did.
Then he remembered.
She didn't know he would change into a rabbit.
The thought made him recoil.
When she first found out, they had been friends and finding out made them better friends. But that was before. That was when she was brought up by Tohru and best friends with Megumi.
Tohru was a very open minded person and most likely passed that down to Hinata.
Megumi was a peculiar friend with his curses and all and probably helped eased more acceptance in.
Hinata Honda and Hinata Hayashi acted the same, granted Hinata Hayashi was more shy but that were her supposed 'families' fault, but would they react the same? In the end would she still feel the same.
Then again, he was a sucker for these kind of romances.
Never hurt to try.
And maybe he could make her fall for him again by not showing her the spirit of the rabbit!
He stood up a little to quickly and stumbled.
Suddenly Hinata was there and crashed into her.
Poof!
"Are you alright?" Hinata asked before coughing and crying out in surprise.
Or maybe not. Momiji thought with a grimace.

Ok so this chapter was mostly about what was going on in the 3 year time period. And if you haven't figured it out yet, the scenes and quotes at the very top are from Her Rabbit.
Can anyone guess where this scene was from?
