Beautifully Painful

"Best friends come in all shapes and sized right? So you're the bunny boy and I'm the heart girl." -Hinata Honda

Hinata stared in shock at the bundle of clothes sitting on top of her.

"M-Momiji?" She called hesitantly.

Suddenly the clothes moved and backed away with a squeak, her eyes wide and fingers trembling, and slowly lifted the bundle.

In place of the golden haired Sohma, was a rabbit.

A rabbit that immediately tried to curl into itself.

Hinata looked around in confusion, before a sudden thought struck her.

If...his clothes are here...he's running around the house...n-naked?

A deep red painted on her cheeks as she looked around precariously, waiting to cover her eyes from any obscenity.

"Where do you think he is little rabbit?" She asked nervously.

"Squeak?"

Hinata froze and turned to stare at the rabbit. "Did you just say "squeak"?" She asked incredulously.

"No...squeak."

"I'm going mad." Hinata she whispered fearfully, backing away slowly until she hit the wall.

"You sound like Momiji." She bent down and covered her face. God, she barely met the guy and now she was imagining his voice.

"No I don't..." He mumbled.

"Squeak." He added as an afterthought.

He received a humiliated, and tired groan from the girl as he slowly walked closer to go through the door she was sitting next to.

Suddenly, Hinata looked up and straight into his eyes, with such clarity in her regularly glazed over eyes that was so familiar, it brought tears to his eyes.

"Momiji." She smiled warmly, before her eyes returned to the glazed over glassy look that was staring in shock.

Only then did he realize he had shifted back and the yellow smoke had faded away.

In place of the rabbit, was Momiji Sohma.

Hinata stared for a long moment before her face burned and she let out a short noise that was almost a scream and covered her eyes.

Momiji drooped, he was afraid of this. She didn't accept it. She couldn't. Who would? He was a boy who turned into a rabbit. That was too wei-

"M-Momiji you d-don't have any c-clothes on!" She cried.

Oh.

Oh.

Ooooh my god.

Momiji felt his face burn in embarrassment before he leapt up and grabbed his clothes, running into the nearest room.

I, Momiji Sohma, am a complete utter idiot.

Silence covered the room like a heavy, woolen blanket. Uncomfortable and suffocating.

Hinata was staring at him in shock and embarrassment, as if waiting for him to turn again.

Momiji cleared his throat and warm chocolate met glazed honey brown.

"So I'm guessing you have questions." He murmured.

"You...you turned into a rabbit." Hinata whispered in awe.

"Y-Yeah." He took a deep breath before telling her everything about the family curse. Leaving out the part of how half of them were now cured.

Hinata was staring at her hands the entire time, her face unreadable.

When Momiji finished he waited for her reaction nervously.

"It's kind of hard to believe." She murmured, her voice a raindrop in a silent night.

Momiji opened his mouth to verify that he wasn't lying and it really was the truth when she continued.

"But...for some reason I believe you. Something is telling me that you aren't lying and you aren't crazy. It could be the fact that you did transform into a rabbit in front of me but, I believe you." She looked up with a small smile.

Momiji felt tears well into his eyes and he broke into a heartbreaking smile.

Even though she was raised different, in the end she was utterly and beautifully Hinata Honda.

Even when she was brought up in isolation.

Even when her 'family' lied and suffocated her.

Even when she had barely known him for a day.

She was still his Hinata.

And that revelation shattered him and pieced him back together.

He had pretended that he was assured that no matter what she would come back for 3 long years. He didn't like that term. 3 years. The phrase never seemed to capture the doubt, pain, and fear he had experienced without her.

Everyday was agony.

He couldn't even think of going back to how he used to be. Those long lonely days filled with a hollow feeling in his heart.

Ever since he had met her, his heart felt so warm. Every moment they shared let his heart swell with a joy he never imagined he could feel.

So he waited.

Waited for the hollow feeling to go away.

Waited for Heart Girl to come back.

Waited for his heart to swell, with love he realized that warm feeling was, once again.

And all those doubts were dispelled by the girl who sat in front of him, gently smiling and assuring she was there.

It was beautiful and painful and hopeful all at once.

"Momiji? Are you alright?" Her concerned voice asked and suddenly a warm hand was wiping away his gathering tears.

The hand froze, "oh I'm sorry!" She winced, stepping back but Momiji shook his head and held her warm hand in his cold one and smiled a beautifully painful smile.

"No, it's alright." He murmured and she blushed.

"I-It's alright to cry if you want." She said hesitantly.

"N-No it's just, you are one of the first people to ever accept me." He smiled sweetly.

"People come in all shapes and sized right? So you're the bunny boy and I'm the heart girl." Hinata said, smiling calmly as Momiji's breath hitched and his shoulders began to shake.

Momiji threw his arms around her and shut his eyes.

Poof!

"M-Momiji?" Hinata stuttered.

"Just...just let me please? Just for a little while." He murmured.

"O-Okay." She said, hesitantly stroked the top of his head and he smiled internally.

All those restless nights, the what ifs, the doubt, it was all worth it.

In the end she came back, with a warm hug and the swelling of his heart.

He finally felt at peace. Hinata was here. He was here. He was home because Hinata was his home.

And that was the beautifully painful truth.

One he would never want to change.

I'm sorry this took so long, I spent days trying to figure out how they would react and such but I'm kind of happy with the way it turned out.

Give me your thoughts!
