(Katie's Pov)

"Thank God," I mumbled to myself as the pack house finally came into view.

In front of me stood an enormous wood cabin, surrounded by nothing but trees, with no houses to be seen for miles. It's always so beautiful out here, especially when it snowed like it is now.

Once I reached the front door, I pulled my keys from my pocket, unlocking the door. I stomped my feet a few times to get the snow that had caked up off before entering the house. My mom would kill me if I tracked snow all through the house. I let out an exhausted yawn as I closed the door, reaching down to lock the old oak door.

I shrugged my backpack off my shoulders, letting it fall to the floor with a loud thud. I walked further into the house, opening my jacket to see that the little pup was fast asleep. He stretched out his tiny body, letting out an adorable whine before snuggling back up against me.

"You're safe now," I said, drawing him closer to me.

I slipped my right arm out of my heavy winter coat, careful as to not wake him. I gently placed the pup in my now free arm as I let my coat slip to the floor. I slipped out of my boots as I made my way down the dimly lit hallway.

I was about to walk into my room when my father's booming voice reached my ears.

"Katie, are you just now getting home?"

I turned around to see my dad standing in the doorway of his bedroom. He rubbed his eyes before looking over at the grandfather clock that stood in the hall.

"It's like 1:00 in the morning. Where the hell have you been?" He asked, his tone a mix of worry and anger.

"I couldn't sleep, so I went out to try my new camera that uncle Calum had bought me for my birthday," I stated, causing my dad to let out a tired sigh.

"I wish you wouldn't go out so late at night, especially alone. You know Rogues have been spotted more than usual lately."

"I know you do dad, I'm sorry. I promise I won't do it again."

I bit my bottom lip as I nervously shifted my weight from my left to my right foot.

My dad is the Alpha over the Red Lake pack, the second largest pack in the tri-state area. I am the baby out of our parent's four children, all of us adopted.

My parents had tried for years to have a child of their own, but gave up when the doctor gave them the bad news. The news being that they'd never be able to conceive a child, but my parents were determined to have a family, so instead of giving up, they decided to adopt.

The oldest of us is my brother Xavier, he's an Alpha wolf, soon to inherit the Alpha position from my father. Next is my sister Riley, she's an Omega wolf who is mated to my brother's best friend and future Beta.

Max is next, and he's also an Omega wolf. He recently found out his mate was an Alpha to one of our neighboring packs. Then there's me, the human amongst wolves who had just turned eighteen.

"What's that?"

"What's what?"

"The thing that you are holding."

I looked up to see my dad now standing in front of me, staring down at the pup, who was fast asleep in my arms.

"I found him in the woods. I got him to come to me, but he passed out."

"I see," my dad said, not looking too pleased.

He reached forward, taking the pup from my arms before he began to walk away from me.

"I'll take him to the pack doctor. You need to go to bed."

I stood there for a minute, watching as my dad disappeared around the corner. Sighing, I walked into my bedroom, shutting the door behind me. I quickly changed into some warm pajamas before climbing into bed, pulling the comforter over my tired body.

Yawning, I gave in to sleep, letting the rest of the world fade out around me.
