Chapter Seven
"So what is it that you want to know?" I asked.
"We need to know from both of your points of view, on what exactly went on," Erik said.
"Which one of you will go first?" asked Calum.
"I guess Jes-," I turned to look at Jesse only to see him giving me a 'I think the fuck not' look.
"O-Or I can," I said.
I wasn't going to push it with Jesse, he could be a real asshole sometimes and he looked to be in a bad mood today.
"Very well then, tell me everything from the beginning."
"But Alpha," I protested.
I was the Beta to the Black Crest pack. We are known to be the strongest pack in the country, and we were only growing stronger.
"Alpha? Casey since when did you start calling me Alpha? You've always called me by my name."
"It's not professional for us lower ranks to call our Alpha by his or her first name," I stated, avoiding eye contact with him.
I could hear him sigh in annoyance, as he took the few steps that were separating us, grabbing ahold of my face, so that I'd have no choice but to look at him.
"What did my father say to you?" He questioned, his eyes turning from their usual emerald green to bright red, letting me know his wolf was present.
I just stood there staring at him, contemplating on what I should do.
If I tell him, he'll go to his Father, and I couldn't have that. I was already on Alpha Lueger's shit list, I didn't need another reason for him to hate me even more.
"Casey!" Baron yelled out, causing me to jump as his hands tightened on my face.
"What. Did. He. Say. To. You."
"Well, h-he said t-that l-lower ranks s-such a-as myself shouldn't address h-higher ranks i-in such a p-personal w-way, that we should o-only address you f-formally," I managed to stutter out.
I hated when Baron would use his Alpha tone to make me and my much weaker wolf submit to his much more dominant Alpha wolf.
I may be a Beta, the second in command to such a fearless Alpha, but when Baron would use his Alpha command. Well, it made me feel so weak, I would always start stuttering as my wolf would fall back into submission.
Baron dropped his hands, his eyes softening, as he pulled my body flush against his. My body tensed at the sudden contact, I slowly relaxed as I realized he was only hugging me.
"Uh. W-What are y-you doing?" I questioned.
"What's it look like I'm doing, you dumbass," Baron said, chuckling as his arms tightened around me.
"I'm not letting you go until I get a hug back." He stated.
Sighing, I wrapped my arms around him, giving his back a few pats. When he didn't release me like he said he would, I could feel my wolf grow irritated.
"Ok, you can let go now." Baron sighed before pulling away from me.
"Casey please don't listen to my Father. You're like a brother to me and I don't want my Father changing that," Baron said, with a sad look in his eyes, instantly filling me with regret.
"I'm sorry Baron. I just figured that if I listened to your Father he'd get off of my back a little bit."
"You shouldn't be apologizing to me Casey, if anything I should be apologizing to you," Baron said.
"Why would you say that?" I asked, feeling confused.
"I've seen how my dad has been treating you, so the other day I asked him to back off of you, and well, we'll just say it didn't go so well," Baron admitted.
"Baron you don't have to stick up for me, I honestly don't blame your Father for hating me so much, I'm surprised you don't hate me either, the rest of the pack does."
Baron's Father and Mother had been married when they were sixteen, back then arranged marriages were a huge tradition with our kind. Alphas would come together from all over the world, trying to find suitable mates for their children, the stronger the packs were, the better.
My parents were also in an arranged marriage, the only difference between my parent's marriage and Barons is that they loved each other.
My Father and I stayed with our old pack until I was ten, that was until the incident with my uncle, that and my Father got an offer from Alpha Lueger that he just couldn't pass on. We moved here so he could become the new Beta over the pack, things seemed like they were going to be ok, until the year I turned seventeen. My father had been killed by hunters, while he and Alpha Lueger were doing one last patrol for the night.
That's when it happened, the possession. I had injured a few of the pack members while they tried to subdue me.
"Why would I hate you for something that you didn't have control over?" Baron asked me, drawing me from my thoughts. Sighing, I shrugged my shoulders, not knowing what to say.
Baron shook his head, a smile spreading across his face, he walked over to me, throwing his arm over my shoulders.
"What am I going to do with you Casey," he said causing me to roll my eyes, while a small smile made its way to my face.
"No more depressing shit man, we both have a big day ahead of us." Baron let go of my shoulders, walking away from me, as he proceeded to make his way down the stairs of the pack house.
"Both?" I asked, catching up to him.
"Well yeah, my Father is giving me the Alpha title today. So you know what that means?"
Baron had a huge grin on his face, that seemed to only be growing bigger as a mischievous glint could be seen in his eyes.
"Uh?"
"That means I get to make you my Beta, that also means I get to piss my Father off, especially since he wants Jesse to be my Beta, even though he knows that Jesse is one of our best Enforcers," Baron said as we reached the base of the stairs.
Walking to the front door, we exited the pack house only to be met with an overwhelming scent of blood.
"Please tell me I'm not the only one who smells that?" I asked, frantically looking around, trying to locate the source of the smell.
"No, trust me yo-"
"Baron, there you are," Jesse yelled out, interrupting Baron mid-sentence.
"Jesse, what's going on?"
"It's bad, we were setting up for the Alpha ceremony when a bunch of Rogues rushed at us, I don't know how they managed to get onto our territory, we never sensed them, or even picked up their scent."
It was only then that I noticed how beat up Jesse was. I hadn't noticed it earlier, but Jesse was covered in blood, huge gashes were covering most of his chest and back.
"Where is everyone?" I asked. Causing Jesse to look at me with a pained expression on his face.
"Most of them are already in the battle, the women and children have gone into the safe room, the Luna was at the orphanage earlier, so she has more than likely gone under lockdown with them"
An eerie silence fell over the three of us as we just stood there, staring at each other, not knowing exactly what our next move should be.
"Where's my father?" Baron asked.
"He's in the front line, after I had been injured he told me to retreat for now and to come find the two of you, for some reason, we can't mind link with anyone in the pack,"
The wind picked up, causing the scent of blood from earlier to grow stronger, as well as a different scent.
"Do you smell that?" Baron asked.
"It's wolfs bane, it's why no one can use the pack link anymore," I stated.
"Shit," Baron mumbled under his breath.
"I assume that for now most of everyone is on the east side of the territory, that's where the ceremony was to be held."
"What should we do?" I asked.
"We head to the battle, our job is to protect this pack even if it kills us," Baron said as he turned his attention to Jesse.
"How are you holding up?"
"I'll be fine, I'm already healing."
I knew Jesse was lying, you could tell by how uneven his breathing was, even his heart rate was off, it didn't help that the wolfs bane was slowing the healing process as well. He was in pain but there was no point in trying to stop him, I think Jesse was even more hard-headed than Baron was.
"Then let's go shall we."
The three of us began to run towards the woods, preparing ourselves for the battle ahead of us. I was suddenly knocked to the ground by something flying into me, I let out a blood-curdling scream as my right shoulder started burning. Looking down, I could see the end of an arrow sticking from it, and to make matters worse, almost the whole arrow was made of silver.
"Casey,' Baron screamed out, as he knelt beside me. Baron's eyes came into contact with the arrow, as his hand reached down to grab ahold of the arrow.
"No do-" but before I could finish, Baron had already wrapped his hand around the arrow, only to hurriedly pull it away, letting out a low whine, from the burn his hand had just received.
"I'll b-be fine," I said.
"Now g-go." Baron's eyes held tears in them before he spoke.
"No, not without you."
Baron pulled me into a sitting position before he slung me over his shoulder.
"How the hell did he get shot?" Jesse asked as he and Baron crept through the woods.
"The bigger question is why do Rogues have arrows, they usually fight in their wolf forms."
"Why didn't you just leave me behind?"
My words were starting to slur, as I could feel the silver coursing through my blood.
"We refuse to leave you behind," Jesse said.
"I'm just dead weight now, I'll probably be dead before we get to the fight" My eyes were starting to get heavier, and I could feel my heartbeat start to slow down.
"Don't talk like that Casey, you're going to be just fine."
We continued to walk through the woods, the sounds of the battlefield reached my ears, well that was before the sound of Baron screaming out in pain.
I could feel Baron's grip loosen around me, as my body soon fell to the ground with a loud thud. I groaned in pain as my shoulder came into contact with the ground, causing the arrow to wedge further into my shoulder.
"We got the Alpha and the Beta sir," a females voice said from beside me.
"Hey, the boss man said he wanted the Beta alive."
"Yeah and?"
"And, from the looks of it, he'll be dead soon."
"What do you want me to do about it," the female voice snapped at the other person.
"Nothing, I'll just do it myself,"
I could feel a pair of hands on me, as they carefully moved me onto my left side. Pain erupted throughout my entire body as I could feel the arrow being removed from my shoulder, tears filled my already blurry eyes as the pain intensified.
The person above me released a grunt as they forcefully yanked the arrow, before a god-awful ripping sound could be heard, I screamed out, causing my throat to burn.
"Give me the syringe, he's got way too much silver in him," the person above me said to the woman, she huffed in annoyance before the sound of a lid popping off was heard. That was followed by a stinging pain in my upper arm, it didn't take long for whatever had been in that syringe to kick in.
My vision started to clear, my heart rate was slowly going back to normal, and I could feel my shoulder start to heal itself.
"If we waited any longer, he would've been dead." I looked up, trying to figure out who that voice belonged to, right in front of me stood a man, he looked to be in his mid-forties, possibly late thirties.
He had brown, greasy hair that was starting to grey in areas, his body was well-toned, you could tell he worked out often.
Looking to my left I saw a woman, who seemed to be in her early twenties, she was the complete opposite of the man. She was curvy, was very neat with her appearance unlike the very gruff-looking man, you could tell she cared about how she looked, while he didn't seem to care at all.
Looking to my right, I saw Baron, who was hogtied, while two people stood close by, guns aimed at him, ready to kill at any moment.
I glanced over at Baron who somehow seemed calm.
The people who had been guarding Baron, cocked their guns, fingers twitching around the trigger in anticipation, just waiting for the command.
"Baron. No!" I screamed out, causing Veronica to look at me, with a scowl on her face.
She walked over to me, bringing her boot-covered foot back, before the steel toe boot made contact with my face, making the whole world around me go black, as the sound of bullets filled my ears.
*A few hours later*
I was woken up by the sounds of pained screams, I slowly opened my eyes only to be met with flames. I quickly sat up, realizing I was in the same place as I had been earlier.
How was that possible?
What was an even better question was why was everything around me on fire. All I could see for miles was red flames, which were quickly burning everything it touched.
Looking around me, I realized I was completely alone. Where was I? Where were Baron and Jesse?
I stood from my sitting position, looking around me trying to find any opening that would get me out of here before it was too late. I could feel my blue eyes shift to Micah's gold eyes, letting his enhanced vision take over.
"See anything?" I asked Micah.
"There, to your left. It's not a big opening but I think we can get through."
I took off in the direction Micah said to go, trying my best not to breathe in too much of the smoke that filled the air. I just kept running until I finally came to a clearing in the woods, the air was beginning to clear as rain fell from the dark sky.
My feet skidded against the wet ground as I came to a halt. I took a shaky breath at the sight in front of me, dead wolves and humans littered the field I was currently standing in, the ground was stained from all of the bloodshed. Closing my eyes I took in a few calming breaths, it wasn't the time to freak out, I needed a clear head if I was going to try and find where the main fight was at.
"Casey where are you?" Baron's voice said through the pack link.
"Baron, you're alive?" I asked.
"I'm alive, but that's not important right now, we desperately need you here."
"Where are you?" I asked, shifting into my wolf form, waiting on Baron's location.
"We're on the west side of the territory, close to the territory li-"
"Baron?" I asked, taking off in the direction of where they were at.
"HURRY!" Baron yelled out before the link went quiet.
I quickened my steps, trying to hurry and get there before it was too late. There was no telling how many more of our pack members have died or been injured since I passed out, that was precious time that we didn't have to waste. I could tell that I was getting closer to the front lines, just by the sounds of growling wolves, mixed with the sounds of flesh and fur being ripped open by the vicious battle that wasn't far from me.
The smell of blood mixed with dirt-filled my nose, the more I ran the stronger the scent was getting. I was getting close, there was no doubt that I was. I turned to my left only to stop in my tracks, standing in front of me were three rogues.
"Perfect timing," Micah sarcastically said.
I let out a warning growl, only for all three to return it. I didn't have time for this, I need to hurry and get to the front lines. One of the rogues lunged at me, causing me to quickly shift to my left, only for him to turn mid-skid and run at me.
The bastard was fast, I had to give him that much at least. He lunged at me once more, this time I lowered myself to the ground, causing him to slam headfirst into the old oak tree that was behind me. The rogue managed to get into the standing position, but his legs were shaky, every time he tried to make a move he would stagger, almost falling over. Taking a closer look at him I could tell, he had taken some serious damage from the tree, he had an open wound on his head, blood was falling down his face, what wasn't soaking into his fur was dripping onto the ground.
I honestly didn't know how he was still standing, all that blood loss he should be on the ground right now. He slowly turned in my direction, taking shaky steps towards me, I stood there examining him closely, watching his movements.
"Just take care of him already, we don't have the time for this," Micah said.
"No need for that," I said, right as the rogue fell to the ground.
Now to take care of the other two. Looking over in their direction, I could see them glaring at me, before they made their move, one of them now stood behind me as the other one stayed in front. My left and right side were still open, but the way they were positioned, there was no way I could escape from there. I guess that leaves me only one option, I have no choice but to attack them.
I shifted my body to the right, to give off the impression that I was going to make a run for it, the rogue fell for my trick, right when he started to go after me I straightened my stance before lunging at him, closing my jaw around his throat. Tightening my jaw, my teeth sunk into his throat, causing my teeth to puncture his jugular, the rogue began to make gurgling sounds before he went limp.
Throwing him to the ground, I turned my attention to the last rogue, this one was a she-wolf, judging by her size she was probably still a teenager. I walked closer to her as she rolled onto her back, showing a sign of submission and defeat. I quickly shifted back into my human form, walking over to her as she began to whimper.
"I'm not going to hurt you, but I am going to give you a warning, I want you off of my pack lands, if you come back, I won't hesitate to kill you next time," I warned her, letting Micah take over.
The she-wolf didn't waste any time getting on her feet, before quickly running away from me. I shifted, before heading in Baron's direction once more, I rounded a corner to finally come face to face with the main battle.
It was so much worse than I thought, the ground had been painted red from all of the bloodshed, dead wolves were covering the ground, I couldn't even begin to count how many there were, and it wasn't just wolves here, there were also humans. My eyes quickly scanned the field, until they locked onto Baron's smoky grey wolf, Jesse stood beside him, helping to fight the rogues. A black wolf came barreling out of the woods, heading straight for Baron. I made a mad dash in Baron's direction, I had to get there before the rogue did.
Baron and Jesse turned as I got closer to them, they must have picked up on my scent.
"Behind you," I screamed out, right as the rogue made contact with Baron's right hind leg.
Baron whimpered as his body jerked forward from the force, I quickened my steps, leaping once I was close enough. My jaw wrapped around the back of his neck as I began to pull him off of Baron. The rogue let go of Baron as I began to forcefully shake my head, causing the wound I had created to tear open even more.
Blood filled my mouth before overflowing onto the ground, the rogue growled at me before throwing his body back, putting all of his weight into it as we both fell to the ground. I tightened my jaw as he kept trying to buck me off of him.
The rogue released another whimper as I let him go, only to quickly slam him to the ground, pinning him so he couldn't go anywhere.
"Kill him!" Micah yelled out, as buried my canines into his throat.
The rogue desperately tried to get out of my grip, until he eventually went limp. I removed my canines from his throat, before going over to where Jesse and Baron were at.
"What the hell is going on here?" I asked, hoping someone could fill in the blank spots for me.
"After that woman knocked you out, Jesse and a few of the warriors he had rounded up, attacked them before they could take you," Baron said.
"Take me?"
"They had Baron tied up so he couldn't do anything, but we were watching from afar, after they knocked you out, this one guy hoisted you over his shoulder, and started to walk away with you, two of my guys followed him, said it looked like he was going to put you into a truck, that's when I gave them the order to attack," Jesse said.
"Thank you for saving me, I'm just sorry I couldn't get here any sooner."
"Well, you're here now. Casey I need you to listen to me," Baron said, his voice serious.
"What is it?"
"I need you to go and find a pack that can help us, we've lost a lot of our warriors, we need back up and we need it as soon as possible."
"But Baron," I started to protest but was cut off by Baron.
"No buts, now go Casey," Baron said as he started to attack a rogue.
"Then I ended up here," I said.
The three men sat there giving me a weird look, I looked over to Jesse to see he was asleep.
Lazy bum.
"Why send you though?" Calum asked.
"I'm sorry?"
"Judging by your story you were knocked out for a couple of hours, Jesse even accounted for that. So why send you? Baron could have sent any wolf at any time in the battle, could have saved more pack members as well. So why you?"
"Because I'm his Beta if Baron can't do it then it's my job to make sure it gets done. Besides I'm the strongest member in the pack, well besides Baron, but at the end of the day Micah is still stronger than Jax," I stated.
"Jax?" Erik asked.
"Barons wolf."
"I see," Calum said.
Trenton acted like he was going to say something, but didn't get the chance to speak, as the door suddenly flew open, banging loudly as it made contact with the wall. Jesse jerked awake as Amara started to cry.
"Casey!" Jeremy spoke out breathlessly.
"What is it, Jeremy?" I asked, getting out of bed, as I picked up Amara, trying to calm her down.
"It's about Baron."
"What is it?" Jesse asked, now standing next to me, looking frantic.
"He's awake."
