Chapter 27: Everlasting Vow
Penelope narrates:
"IT'S MY WEDDING DAY!"I scream joyously as I throw off the covers of Grace's guest bed.
Grace laughs and fixes our breakfast. Pancakes. After today my husband will make my pancakes! "I can't believe Prince of all people, is ready to settle down and do so with me!" I enthuse.
"As someone who has been around, I have to tell you, it's gets boring after awhile. All that sleeping around. You want something more" Grace confesses.
"But I was that girl who couldn't get second dates! And PRINCE wants to spend the rest of his life with me!"
"Good things come to those who wait. Let's throw these dishes in the sink, get ready and head over to Sophie's to meet everyone "
"Okay!"
I zip my dress up. I'm doing this, actually getting married! Prince is the one for me I know it. The only one. Can't picture marrying someone else.
At Aunt Sophie's my bridal party is there and so is Sabrina and Mom. Brad and Sabrina got a sitter for their son today. Mom puts my veil on me. It's been the family for years and many brides, including Sabrina wore it.
"Penny-where did the time go? You're such a beautiful bride!" Mom exclaims.
"She looks like Aunt Sophie's wedding photos!" squeals Sabrina. Sabrina and I used to look at that old wedding album of Aunt Sophie and her ex. It's was kept because of all the nice family photos. We'd talk about how Aunt Sophie looked like a movie star that day. Because I'm having multiple emotions at once I start crying.
"Let's not mess up your makeup" Vickie advises.
"My baby sister is the envy of all the women in the world!" fusses Sabrina while giving me a big hug.
"Let's hope not. That's too much responsibility." I laugh. I was jealous of Sabrina when she got married. Brad is a catch and she was a perfect bride.
Jeff Katz has shown up to take pictures. Of course, afterward I have to talk photography with him, like I do when I'm on a Prince photo shoot Jeff is doing.
Gary starts teasing" Talking shop on her wedding day. That's Penny for you"
Jeff has to remind me that he can't stay and chat because he has to take pictures of Prince yet. Prince will be the most stunning groom ever! Since Jeff will be the photographer the photos will be nothing short of art.
"I can't believe you aren't nervous." laughs Grace.
"Because I KNOW, just KNOW that he'll be there. And as long as there's someone to marry us-we're getting married today, no matter what! "I insist.
Mom takes me aside. "That's a good attitude. But I want to talk to you about what comes after a wedding, marriage. Penny, don't concern yourself with a perfect marriage. You can have a happy and loving marriage-but it won't be perfect. No one, not even Brini, actually has one. Remember that. " Mom instructs. Sabrina has a perfect everything, but I keep my mouth shut.
Prince narrates:
Here I am, at Paisley Park, my groomsmen are waiting for me and I'm in my bedroom. What am I doing? Freaking out! What if I screw up at the altar in front of everyone I care about? Please Lord, help me today.
Margaret, the best man knocks on the door. "Prince? You ready?" she asks.
Ha! My nerves are so bad I can't draw a straight line with my eyeliner! "Not quite!" I call out.
"Are you decent?"
"Yeah, I'm dressed"
I let her in. She looks incredible in the long black slinky skirt, matching jacket and sleeveless vest style top Penelope designed for her.
"Jeff is going to be here any minute! Your eyeliner looks terrible! Honestly, why are you wearing makeup today? This isn't a concert and you ain't ugly!"
"Well, why are you wearing it?" I retort.
"What is up with you? Oh...I know you just want to skip the ceremony and get to the wedding night." She giggles like a schoolgirl.
"And skip the reception with the music I put together? No. Here's the wedding band. Lose it and it'll be the last thing you do!" I yell. Penelope I picked out antique bands together and I don't want this to not be perfect. "Actually, I'll going to carry this! I've got pockets!"
Margaret shakes her head then looks out the window, "Whatever! Jeff's here! Fix your face!" she urges and leaves me to my messed up liner.
Deep breath. How many times have I done my makeup? I can do it again. Once I draw on a couple straight lines, I join the guys and Margaret. They're all talking, chilling out, making me wish I could relax like that.
Suddenly there is a rubbing against my leg. Amethyst! I'll have to remove the cat hair from my leg, but I don't care. Brad suggests Amethyst be in some shots. Why not? We get some fun shots with and without her.
At the church, I wait for Penelope at the altar. Looking into the pews, I see everyone Penelope and I care about. Bernadette gives me an encouraging smile. Our bridal party takes their places. A good looking bridal party it is. The bridesmaids must be catching everyone's eye in their beautiful royal blue dresses my wardrobe department made.
Gary got a suit with a royal blue vest and necktie. He and Margaret looked right out of a magazine as they walked down the aisle.
In the doorway now stands my bride on the arm of Mr. Smith. My beautiful, perfect, fairy tale starlet bride in an incredible vintage dress.
There's a lump in my throat and I want to cry. My dad shoots me that you better not fuck this up look before smiling at me. Mom looks very stoic.
Penelope narrates:
Dad and I walk down the aisle together. My heart is full of love for my handsome groom. Maybe it's strange, but I also have this great serenity right now. Not worried about stupid things like looking a certain way. And I feel adored! All our friends and family are here...and Derek's former band members are here with their plus ones! Prince invited them! Happily I walk up to Prince, wanting to hug him as soon as I'm at the altar...but there's vows to say first. We join hands to recite our basically traditional vows. Prince goes first:
"Penelope, you are my soulmate. I love you. You enrich my life and love me as I am. Your voice is music to me. I'm grateful to God for having our paths cross. I vow to love, honor and cherish you. For richer or poorer, better or worse, in sickness and in health, till death do us part, as long as we both shall live"
He is relieved when he finishes. It's my turn now. "Prince, I never knew I could love a man as much I love you. You are special. I'm in awe of you daily and get lost in your eyes. I too, am grateful to our Lord for our relationship. I vow to love, honor and cherish you. For richer or poorer, better or worse, in sickness and in health, till death do us part, as long as we both shall live"
I pass my bouquet to Grace. Prince takes my hand and says "I give you this ring as a symbol of my everlasting love and devotion for you." He takes my ring from his pocket and places it on my finger while my heart races and lip trembles.
Grace hands me Prince's ring and I repeat "I give you this ring as a symbol of my everlasting love and devotion for you." He looks more delighted than I've ever seen him once that ring is on!
"I know pronounce you husband and wife! You may now kiss the bride!" The minister proclaims.
Prince takes me in his strong arms and we have the best kiss I've ever had! Maybe our embrace and kiss is on the lengthy side, but we don't care it's our day. This is the happiest either of us has been! I'm Mrs. Nelson now and I'm swooning!
We leave the church as the guest cheer. When we get to our car, which is the one from Under the Cherry Moon,we see Grace and Gary placing a JUST MARRIED sign on it. The sign's letters are royal blue glitter and it's trimmed with a peach feather boa that I recognize from one of Gary's drag outfits.
Prince and I drive away to the reception deliriously in love with on another.
