Chapter 26: Rehearsal Luncheon

Penelope narrates:

Someone who could almost pass for a trophy wife looks back in the mirror. Not by genetic miracle, but with diet, workouts, hairstyling, makeup and carefully chosen clothes. I earned it!

Prince is proud as a peacock over me especially since I'm home from having spent the past three days in California filming a tiny part for the TV show Murder She Wrote. I played a bit part of a photographer. Big leap, I know but I did it well, I think. An acquaintance of Prince and me, who works on the show thought having an actual photographer would be cool.

Not going to ditch photography for acting. Overall it was a great experience, I met new people in the industry and Prince even bragged about me to Bernadette!

"Hey, TV star, where do you want to put the Emmy?" Prince teases.

"They wouldn't give an Emmy to someone who's character has a few minutes of screen time and who's character is listed as 'photographer' instead of a name. " I laugh.

Smiling Prince holds out a small gift box "A little positive encouragement" he says.

A diamond bracelet. He shouldn't have. "Thank you, Sugar! Let me take this off..."I remove my bracelet and replace it with the new one.

Today is our rehearsal luncheon. Tomorrow is the wedding! Life is a whirlwind of a dream these days! In twenty four hours, I'll be Penelope Nelson I cannot wait!

Prince kisses me and takes me into the room where we're hosting our luncheon. We chose a simple afternoon event so people would not worry about getting home late.

Their children are welcome and Prince made sure to have supervised yard games and the basketball hoop ready for them after lunch so they could play while we went over the wedding rehearsal. He's going to be an incredible father, I can feel it!

Brad and Sabrina have brought Sammy. She's looking better than me and I'm slightly resentful as she had Sammy less than a year ago. Always has to have everything going for her. Never has to work for anything. And on the other hand I swear I can't miss a single workout or my weight starts creeping up! Bitch didn't even get stretch marks during her pregnancy! A REAL trophy wife, for sure! Her next big goal is to be Mrs. Minnesota 1988, she'll probably get it.

Margaret is here. She's perfect too, but she's so nice I can't hold it against her. Margaret hugs me, apologizes for missing the engagement party and tells me I'm the type she always wanted Prince to marry.

Mattie meets Margaret's husband Oscar. Despite being told that Oscar owns an art gallery and the wine for the wedding was from his family's vineyard, Mattie still slips him a split second disapproving glance as she feels Margaret should've married Prince when she had the chance. Prince made it clear to me that he and Margaret had different priorities in life but would always love each other as friends, much the way Grace and I do.

Grace and I haven't stopped being excited about being engaged at the same time. Her and Gary's wedding will be much simpler than mine, a service at City Hall and lunch at a relative's house. She just doesn't want a fancy affair because her beloved younger sister Gail passed away years ago after being hit by a drunk driver and Grace can't imagine having a real ceremony without Gail at the altar as a bridesmaid. The wedding will be after Prince and I come back from our honeymoon. Grace and I have a lot to talk about today, girlishly talking about our upcoming weddings.

Prince narrates:

Dad probably is mingling with Sophie. Can't blame him. He decides to show off on my piano. Gary joins in singing. Because there's mainly guests who've already heard him sing, he's not as timid as he was at the engagement party. He's still not quite as comfortable performing as he is in full drag. Shame. But Gary is not the first singer to feel more secure behind a stage persona.

When I get a chance, I ask Gary to sing two or three short songs at our wedding because I am confident he can do this. He agrees reluctantly and we settle on some songs he knows by heart.

"Prince's wedding...no pressure there" Gary laughs nervously.

Already I'm nervous about the wedding. I love Penelope and want to be the sort of man her father is- able to stand beside his wife and still love her after over 30 years. Since I don't believe in divorce, I'm determined to make this last. Once I marry, the public will be waiting for me to mess up, to go make to my bachelor ways. I pray our marriage won't be tabloid fodder. One so called publication said that her weight loss was because I insisted she slim down. Which of course isn't true. Tabloids are still banned here. She doesn't need their negativity.

Penelope squeezes my hand and kisses me. She's got adoration in her eyes. We've already been through so much together and we're so in love there is no way we won't stay happily married forever. Soulmates brought to one another by destiny. A living love story.

The guests, Penelope and I sit down to lunch. Mom is a little despondent. Dad is having fun in his prime seat next to Sophie. Uncle Carl, a relative of Penelope's just blurts out joyously "Penny's FINALLY getting married, now I can die happy!"

"Uncle Carl, I hope you have many more wonderful years" I reply.

Mrs. Smith says he shouldn't curse himself that way.

"It's just an expression!" sputters Carl.

Most of the guests' children run outside to play after lunch. I figured they'd get restless waiting around for us to finish going over the wedding.

The minister tells Penelope and I "You'll say your vows, I'll ask if there's any objections, then you, Prince will kiss the bride."

"Like this?" I ask innocently before smooching Penelope in front of everyone.

The responses from the guests vary from giggling to whistling.

"YOU CAN DO BETTER THAN THAT, SONNY!" yells Penelope's great-grandma Enid. Her memory isn't all there and she doesn't censor her thoughts much, but I've got a soft spot for her.

I double over laughing. "Saving it for the wedding night," I scoff after catching my breath.Penelope buries her face in her hands. The luncheon is over a bit later than expected and Penelope is off to Grace's to spend the night before the wedding away from me and Paisley Park.

"You know, we can skip that superstitious crap " I whisper.

"Sugar, I hate to leave but it's tradition and Grace has everything all set up. " Penelope gently insists.

"You've got to let us have our little pre-wedding slumber party. It's not as if you don't keep her to yourself at night as much possible" Grace teases.

No lies told. Penelope and I kiss once more as fiancés before I let her go. She reminds me how many hours are left until our wedding while giggling with excitement. I feel the same anticipation as I wave goodbye to Penelope.
