12 (PART TWO)

When the sun rose the next day, Yoojin stirred awake. She groaned. There was a light pounding in her head, but she felt much better than yesterday. The recent events played back in her head and her eyes widened. Where was Wooyoung? She stretched her neck, turning her head to the right to find Wooyoung sleeping in another hospital bed. He looked like a puppy, quietly laying there with his mouth open just a fraction. Smiling to herself, she allowed herself to take it all in now while he couldn't see.

"Are you going to keep staring at my face all day?" Wooyoung asked, slowly blinking awake.

Yoojin's eyes went wide, and she faced the ceiling to hide her embarrassment.

"How'd you know I was staring?" she asked.

"Ha, I was right. You were staring," Wooyoung quipped quietly.

The girl sighed, annoyed that she fell for his trick.

"What were you going to do if I was sleeping, and you woke me up?" she questioned.

"Then you'd be lucky and get to wake up to my beautiful voice."

Yoojin cracked a grin, missing their banter and flirting. They laid there for a good few minutes, basking in the comfortable silence. However, Yoojin's mind was still filled with awkward scenarios.

"Are you okay?" Wooyoung finally spoke.

"Yeah," Yoojin replied. "You?"

"Yeah." A pause. "I'm really sorry. About everything. I promised myself that I'd never let you get hurt and I failed."

Yoojin looked over at him. "Hey, that's not your fault. You couldn't control what happened and you can't always protect me."

Wooyoung clenched his fists. He was furious with himself that he couldn't save her nor get revenge. What was all his training for? What was it all for if he didn't have Yoojin anymore?

"We're still friends though, right?" Yoojin quietly asked.

"Of course," Wooyoung forced a smile. "You know I can't live without you."

Yet it was killing him. He couldn't hug her or kiss her anymore or call her 'his'. She could date someone else, and he wouldn't be able to do anything. He didn't know if he could survive being just friends, but he couldn't say 'no' when she looked at him like that with her innocent eyes and soft lips.

"Same," Yoojin added, filling the silence.

Wooyoung was her first everything – her first kiss, her first boyfriend – and he was still the only guy that she was completely comfortable with, besides her twin.

"Happy birthday for Sunday," Wooyoung said.

"Thank you," the girl smiled at him.

"I was going to text you, but it felt weird not saying it in person. And then all that shit happened yesterday."

Sunday morning, he woke up way before the sun and drafted many texts to wish her a happy 16th birthday but ended up deleting them all. He spent nearly half an hour torturing his phone with all that cheesy stuff. Then he spent another half an hour contemplating whether he should deliver the birthday present that he bought a while ago. As planned, he had bought a fluffy teddy bear that was as big as a washing machine. It was a simple design coloured light brown.

Wooyoung worried that she might reject it, but he decided to just do it – he was just a friend giving his friend a birthday present. He walked to her house with the plushie and on the way, he bought a single camellia from the florist. Hopefully, the flower would convey his sincerity and she would take him back.

He had knocked on the door, but no one answered. Waiting there for 20 minutes, he realised that neither of the twins were home; they were probably out celebrating. So, he retreated home – a sad, pitiful figure with a giant teddy bear hanging over his shoulder.

Now in the hospital room, the two were interrupted by the door sliding open. A young-looking nurse walked in.

"Oh good, you're both awake," the nurse smiled gently.

She checked their injuries and updated them on their condition. Luckily, they'd mostly be okay to be discharged tomorrow. Gradually, they both sat up and ate some breakfast. All alone, the duo discussed games to play without any objects, coming up with very random ideas that kept them entertained for an hour.

Then, the door opened and Youngbin entered. He had visited the day before with all the parents, but he skipped school today to make sure his sister was alright. Youngbin rushed to Yoojin's side, checking every inch and corner of her head. Yoojin whacked his prying hands away.

"Hey, what are you doing?" Yoojin looked at him weirdly.

"Are you okay?" Youngbin asked the usual question.

"Yes, dad."

Youngbin frowned at her but was relieved that she could joke. His eyes were baggy, and his hair was a mess.

"Don't you know you shouldn't interfere with a fight? What were you trying to do, huh?" Youngbin scolded her. "You're a tiny girl trying to get between two guys. Never, ever do that again. Okay? If you see a fight, just run away."

Yoojin tried to contain her smile. "I told you, I'm fine."

Once Youngbin was satisfied, he opened up his bag that he brought, taking out card games, pencils and Yoojin's sketchbook.

"Here, I brought you some stuff to keep you busy," Youngbin announced. "I should get back to school now or dad's going to kill me."

"Thank you so much," Yoojin said, picking up her sketchbook.

"What about me?" Wooyoung called from his bed, feeling lonely.

The two siblings turned to him simultaneously. Youngbin sighed before throwing him a Nintendo switch. The other boy cried out in excitement, thanking him. Yoojin giggled. Once Youngbin made sure that Yoojin was comfortable, he left.

The electronic sounds from the video game drew Yoojin's attention to Wooyoung. He was so focused, his mouth twitching every so often with a head tilt when he hit a struggle. Yoojin smiled and opened up her sketchbook. The random page landed on a drawing of Wooyoung aiming at a punching bag. She remembered when she drew that in the boxing gym and smiled at the memory. Flipping through the pages, she found another picture of him. She was meant to give one of them to him as a present on their first anniversary. Perhaps, she could give it to him for his birthday.

Taking a pencil and letting her hand control her thoughts, she started on a blank page.

After a few minutes, Yoojin stopped, staring at the paper. Light lines crafted the side portrait of Wooyoung sitting in the hospital bed as he played on the controller. His messy hair was over his forehead and his soft lips were set in a light smirk.

"What are you drawing?" Wooyoung suddenly asked her, peering at the girl.

With wide eyes, Yoojin quickly flipped the page. She looked over at him, hoping he didn't see it.

"Nothing. Just some flowers," Yoojin lied. "Didn't turn out well. I should draw something else."

She kept her gaze pointed down, as if burning a laser through it. Hopefully Wooyoung wasn't doing the same to her. She tried to think of something to draw but the boy next to her was the only image stuck in her mind. Eventually, she started drawing an abstract port with the glistening sea.

The day dragged on and after lunch, Yoojin got the strength to climb out of bed. She checked that the stitches at the back of her head were fine and she approached Wooyoung.

"Do you wanna play with me?" she asked, holding out the card games.

Wooyoung nodded and she made herself comfortable at the foot of his bed. They enjoyed their favourite games over and over again with Yoojin suspiciously winning more than usual. She felt like she could keep playing all night long but after a small dinner, she returned to her bed.

The next day, they were finally discharged – just in time for the last exams for semester 1. Unfortunately, Yoojin's mind kept wandering astray during finals. They got to re-sit the ones that they missed due to medical reasons and soon enough, the whole school was bursting around, ready for the holidays.

On the last day of term, Yoojin sat at her desk, next to Huiyeon's. The two girls kept exchanging looks between themselves and the clock. Everyone's hearts were ticking together. Yoojin's leg kept bouncing up and down. She kept fiddling with her pencil, doodling some flowers and swirls on a spare piece of paper.

Finally, the bell rang. All the students jumped up and started packing. The stampede of footsteps outside could already be heard.

"Yoojin," Huiyeon linked arms with the girl as they joined the flood out. "Are you coming to the club with us? Your brother's gonna be there."

Huiyeon had journeyed to the club a few times in the past months with their other friends from school. She was addicted to dancing and Yoojin also had a feeling that the girl had a crush on Youngbin but was hiding it from her.

Yoojin shook her head. "Not today."

If Youngbin went, it probably meant Wooyoung would be there, and she didn't want to see him surrounded by flirty girls with hardly any clothes on. On the day that they broke up, Huiyeon could tell something was wrong, so Yoojin confessed that they broke up. Of course, anyone could tell that they still had a special connection.

Huiyeon frowned. "Are you really gonna let other girls touch Wooyoung?"

"He's not my boyfriend anymore. I don't have the right to get jealous," Yoojin told her, feeling the same words repeating on her tongue.

"Okay, okay. I'm not rooting for the guy, but I feel like he always made you shine. You still do though of course, but it's okay if you ever want to get back with him. No matter what you do, I'll always support you."

"Thank you, Huiyeon."

Yoojin was truly grateful for her friend. She was saying everything she needed to hear. Even though she didn't need a boy, he always seemed to take her beyond Cloud 9. But what could she do? He had really upset her.

"But we'll see you next Tuesday at the sauna, yeah?" Huiyeon reminded her.

"Of course, I can't wait to see Eunhye again," Yoojin said as they exited the school.

Finally, they reached the intersection and parted ways. Yoojin actually decided to go to the hospital to visit Sooho, who was sadly still in a coma. Her legs moved automatically in the hospital, and she was soon in the familiar room. Sooho lay peacefully in his bed, hooked up to some machines. Yoojin took the seat next to him and held his hand gently.

"Hey, it's me again," Yoojin said before lightly chuckling. "It almost sounds like I'm doing a voicemail."

She licked her lips, watching his unnervingly calm face. At least, she had gotten better at controlling her emotions.

"It's the end of the semester and I just finished finals. It was hard but I think I did well. I can't believe you missed your first high school finals; it's just not fair," she paused, trying to keep the air positive.

"But you're probably happy about that, right? You'd probably be last in the school again, huh? And Sieun would be first. Actually, I haven't seen or talked to Sieun since he fought with Wooyoung and sent us to hospital – I forgive him though, he just really cares about you. I haven't been able to contact Youngyi either. And I heard Beomseok got sent overseas to America or something; I hope he's okay."

Yoojin took a break, unconsciously stroking Sooho's hand. On his small bedside table, there was a sunflower in a thin vase – Yoojin's present that she made sure to water every time she came. Next to it was a new-looking pillow that you can put your arms in so your head could easily rest there. Sooho had one already but this one was a different colour and pattern.

"There's also something I haven't told you yet. I was going to last time, but I was too distressed," Yoojin took a deep breath and continued. "I broke up with Wooyoung. Yeah, I broke up with him. Doesn't that make you so happy that you want to jump up in joy? No, that's selfish of me, isn't it? I'm a horrible person to use your feelings like that."

The young girl sighed. "But it doesn't matter because you can't even hear me right now."

She sat there for a few more minutes before standing up with her backpack on her shoulders. When she made sure that he looked comfortable, she headed out. Yoojin opened the door and was immediately greeted with Sieun's skinny figure. She kept her head down and moved to the side, allowing him entrance.

Yoojin cursed her luck. She knew that he visited Sooho often but during the 24 hours and 7 days of the week, she hoped that it would be when she wasn't there. Sorry Sooho, she lied just a bit.

Sieun was surprised to see the girl but grateful to have this chance. Before she could walk out, he lightly grabbed her wrist.

"Yoojin, I just wanted to apologise again for what happened," Sieun said.

Yoojin huffed, trying not to glare at him. "I know you are, but you really hurt me. Wooyoung and I had to go to hospital. You know, you're just as bad as the bullies when you beat him up and he was hardly to blame. Like I said, it was Beomseok and the other guys."

She stopped herself from giving a full-on scolding like a mother. Sieun swallowed, feeling sincerely guilty.

"I know. I don't deserve you as a friend anymore," Sieun acknowledged. Then he asked the question that plagued his mind, "Is Wooyoung the boyfriend you mentioned last time?"

Yoojin nodded. "Yeah, well, he was my boyfriend. We broke up after Sooho's incident though."

"I'm sorry to hear that," Sieun awkwardly said, not knowing how to respond.

"Well, he's not the best person, as you know. He's been through struggles and stuff."

She cleared her throat, her eyes avoiding his. With her mind blank, she quickly did a small farewell nod and scurried away. Finally, she breathed. Perhaps, one day she'd meet Sieun again and smile at him with a proper conversation.
