Chapter seven

As Klaus was painting on his canvas and Astrid sat on the couch reading a book, Rebekah finally walked in with the white oak stake.

"What took you so long?" asked Klaus, keeping his attention on his paintings.

Rebekah smirked. "Alaric didn't want to hand over the stake." Rebekah held it up and walked towards them. "Luckily I'm quite the charmer."

"And don't we know it," Astrid muttered under her breath, smirking when Rebekah shook her head at her.

"That's it?" Klaus interrupted the two, not believing that he simply handed it over.

Rebekah took another step forward. "The last of the white oak stakes that can kill us. Do you want to do the honours or shall I?" She asked them. Nik grabbed the stake out of her hands and threw it into the fire.

Astrid smiled. "Well, that's that then." She finished and Rebekah moved to walked off when Nik's voice stopped both girls.

"Pack your bags, both of you," He told them. "We're leaving." Astrid understood, there was no point them staying there any longer.

"Today?" Rebekah asked in a shaky voice, sounding suspicious to Astrid. She already had her concerns about Rebekah not being herself but there was nothing keeping them there so why would she sound worried?

"Why not?" Astrid added. "There's nothing keeping us here. As much as I don't want to, we can grab the doppelgänger and be off."

"But tonight's the decade dance." Rebekah reminded them. So that's why she didn't want to leave. "I'm head of the committee, we have to go."

"I'm not going to any dance." Both Astrid and Klaus said at the same time.

Rebekah looked at them with big eyes. "Please? I have big plans for tonight." she told them. "Just go for me?"

The married couple looked at each other. "Okay fine," Nik agreed. "One last hurrah."

"One last hurrah, Nik." Rebekah repeated and she left the room.

Nik looked at Astrid. "What's wrong? You've got that look on your face."

"I still think something's off about her right now," Astrid told him but he shrugged. "You better wear something nice tonight, I'm not going to be the only good looking one for our date-" She stopped when she realised her choice of words and he laughed.

"Astrid Mikaelson are you implying that you want us to attend the dance together?" He questioned in amusement.

Astrid rolled her eyes. "Yes. This is me asking my husband...on a date," She admitted hesitantly. "So?"

"Let me think about it," He said sarcastically. "How about...no."

"Just be ready will you." She said, not giving him much choice in the matter. "I won't tolerate lateness."

Despite not giving him much choice, she left with a smile on her face going to get ready for her date.

He, like Astrid told him to, was not late. Nik was stood in the lobby at 7pm waiting for her. The two hadn't needed to go and buy new outfits because it had been a tradition to keep at least one outfit from each decade, and the 20s was most definitely her favourite.

"Thank god I'm not carrying the looks in this relationship." Astrid told him, fixing his tie like she always used to.

He rolled his eyes. "You're not funny. I'm only going to this dance because I was promised a good date."

"I promised no such thing!" She scoffed with a smile.

"I did," He said and smiled and with that they headed off to the school.

When they reached the school Astrid was quite impressed with how good everyone's outfits were. They walked into the sports hall and looked around and it looked like the dance committee had really outdone themselves.

'You do something to me' by Sinéad O'Connor began playing . Coincidentally, it was their song from the 20s. Nik gave Astrid a look and she huffed before accepting his hand and he pulled her into his chest.

"You know, I'm really starting to think the fates are against me." Astrid told him playfully.

"Oh yeah? Why's that darling?" He asked in amusement.

"Well, the minute we walk in they just had to play this song. And I'll think of other things later." She laughed. She was getting a little nervous, they hadn't gotten this close in a while.

He twirled her around a few times as they laughed and spoke. "I got the bracelet fixed," He said out of the blue. She looked at him in confusion. "The one that Caroline broke. She also, gave the dress back, even though it was just a copy. She didn't want it."

"Good," Astrid said. Suddenly things had gotten tense again. "I'm half way there, you know."

He furrowed his eyebrows. "What?" Half way to what?" He inquired.

"Forgiving you." Silence passed for a few moments. "Where's Rebekah? She wanted us to come to this stupid dance that she organised, so where is she?"

"That's a good point. I haven't seen her anywhere." He agreed and the two began craning their necks and getting a closer look at everyone. They both walked outside after staying for an hour and a half they decided to go home. When they walked outside they didn't expect to see salt on the floor.

"What's this?" Astrid asked no one in particular.

"Your mother's back." Stefan said from behind them.

Astrid rolled her eyes. "Why am I not surprised? What happened?" And so Stefan began to explained his side of the story.
