Chapter 2 - You Can Be King
A little while later, Tori decided to leave her father and his assistant to their work and go ask the King if he needed her to do anything. She had also been concerned about something lately, and wanted to know the best course of action to take, should it happen. She walked through the halls of New Home, waving at the few monsters who passed by, until she reached the Judgement Hall. Tori sighed, remembering her encounters with humans here.
This was where she judged the actions of the past humans who fell down. Some were peaceful, others violent, but none of them hurt the people she loved, which was all she really cared about in this world — that her friends were safe. Tori walked towards the Throne Room, but got distracted by a strange noise. Someone was... crying...? It sounded like it was coming from up ahead. Her instincts to help kicking in, she ran forward towards the noise, turned the corner, and froze. The source of the noise was the Throne Room.
She peeked around the corner, and what she saw broke her heart — her own king, his head in his hands, crying his eyesockets out. His crown laid on a table in the far corner, next to a framed picture of his family — his missing older brother, Prince Sans, the late Prince Gaster, their adopted late little human sister, Ani, and himself — and the flowers around him that lined the floor of the Throne Room seemed less vibrant, like they thrived on the monarch's happiness.
Tori covered her mouth. She knew the King had never had it easy since Gaster's death and Sans' disappearance, but she didn't know his life struggles had hit him this hard. He had always been good at covering up his emotions, but even the toughest stones crack sometimes. I have to cheer him up. I just have to, Tori decided, forgetting what she had come here to talk to him about. She thought of the perfect way to lighten his mood, and cleared her throat.
"You're alone, you're on your own, so what? Have you gone blind? Have you forgotten what you have and what is yours?" Papyrus looked up immediately, a bit shocked to see her standing in the doorway. He blushed a bit, embarrassed to be seen crying by one of his subjects. Tori paid no mind and continued her song. "Glass half empty, glass half full, well either way, you won't be going thirsty — count your blessings, not your flaws." It seemed to be making him feel a bit better, so she walked a little way's into the room and kept singing.
"You've got it all, you lost your mind in the sound. There's so much more, you can reclaim your crown! You're in control, rid of the monsters inside your head... put all your faults to bed... you can be king again." He still looked a bit sad, but at least he wasn't crying anymore! She walked forward again, standing right before the flowers. "You don't get what all this is about, you're too wrapped up in your self doubt. You've got that young blood, set it free!" She knew that her King didn't think much of himself, but thought everything of his friends and subjects.
She kneeled down and put her hands around a rather pale-looking flower. She helped it bloom into full colour with her magic as she continued to sing, in order to make her king feel better. "You've got it all, you lost your mind in the sound. There's so much more, you can reclaim your crown! You're in control, rid of the monsters inside your head... put all your faults to bed... you can be king!"
Tori got up, carefully walked over to him, and put her hands on his cheekbones. "There's method in my madness! There's no logic in your sadness! You don't gain a single thing from misery...!" She smiled brightly at her king, tearing up a bit, although she couldn't put her finger on why. "Take it from me!~" she sang. He still had tear tracks down his face, but he was smiling at her. She kept singing.
"You've got it all, you lost your mind in the sound. There's so much more, you can reclaim your crown! You're in control, rid of the monsters inside your head... put all your faults to bed... you can be king!" As she sang, she walked over to the table where his crown sat, and picked it up carefully, then walked back over to him. "You've got it all, you lost your mind in the sound. There's so much more, you can reclaim your crown! You're in control, rid of the monsters inside your head..."
Tori stood on her tiptoes and put the golden crown back on his head, in its rightful place, and gently wiped the tears from his face. "Put all your faults to bed... You can be king again." She smiled up at him, and he smiled back at her. Her singing had worked — he wasn't sad anymore. "Thank you for that, Toriel," he said shyly. He was never very extroverted, so he was a bit quiet and softspoken. "That made me feel a lot better."
Tori smiled brightly back at him. "It's really no problem, Your Majesty! After all, your smile is quite befitting of you!" The King blushed a bit at the compliment. "Why thank you," he said. "Yours is quite nice as well!" Tori smiled shyly, feeling her cheeks tint. Papyrus stood up, wiping tears from his eyes. Tori had to look up at him. He was the tallest monster she had ever met, at about 7'6". He brushed a bit of fur out of her face, making her blush a bit again. "Please, call me Papyrus. Formalities are not a concern among friends." He put out his hand with a friendly smile. Tori felt flattered, and shook his hand, smiling back at him cheerfully. "If you insist, Your M—Papyrus."
